Ambitious Northern Ireland compressed air energystorage project set to be online by mid‐2018An ambitious 268MW compressedair energy storage (CAES) project inNorthern Ireland could be online bymid‐2018, according to developer Gaelectric.Wind energy developer Gaelectric wantsto build the approximately £300m ($491m)CAES project on the outskirts of the NorthernIreland port of Larne. The project wouldrequire the development of three 230,000m3 salt caverns to store compressed airand provide up to six hours of energy forpeak‐time use.Electricity from the nearby Ballylumfordgas‐fired power station fed via a new 5kmcable would be used to power an electricalmotor, which would drive a 300 barcompressor that stores air in the salt cavern. When electricity demand increases, this airwould be released and used to run a turbineNavitas reveals drop-inlead-acid replacementUS-based Navitas Systems haslaunched a lithium battery familyfor commercial, industrial andmilitary applications. The Ultanium line, designed to directlyreplace lead-acid batteries, come in threeversions; a 24V version for electricalsystems of military vehicles, a 12V type formilitary or commercial starting/deep cycleapplications and a 12V version for deepcycle applications."Commercial and military vehiclescontain 21st century electronics, butthey still are saddled with using 19thcentury lead-acid batteries," said NavitasSystems' president Mil Ovan. The batteries are the same sizeas most military, commercial andindustrial lead-acid batteries and workwith existing lead-acid chargers. Thecompany improved cycle life, runtimeof the Ultanium line, which work nearly50% faster in ampere-hours to full stateof-chargethan traditional lead-acidbatteries.The new batteries will be undergoingtesting by the US Army later this year.to generate electricity. To improve the power output of theturbine, some natural gas is used in thecombustion cycle. This will require theconstruction of a 1.8km pipeline.Gaelectric’s programme manager Conallbestnews 33Haughey said the final submission toNorthern Ireland’s planning authorities wasimminent. “We would hope to receiveplanning consent in July 2015, and have thethree caverns operational by June/July 2018,”he told BEST.Well proven mixing technology for lithium ion batteries from Asia.FILMIX allows significant gains in productivity and linear scalability, yielding large economies of scale important to automotive application. The highly effective turbulent mixing process leads across more homogeneousdispersion of the conductive material in the active materialof the cathode slurry and also to better battery properties such as thecharge/discharge behaviour.
