JUSTICE HANS RAJ KHANNA IS NO MORE<strong>Bharat</strong> <strong>Vikas</strong> <strong>Parishad</strong>’s Patron Justice HansRaj Khanna left for his heavenly abode on 25thFebruary, 2008 at the age of 95.Justice Khanna had a long association with<strong>Bharat</strong> <strong>Vikas</strong> <strong>Parishad</strong>. He was <strong>Parishad</strong>’s NationalPresident for 15 years from <strong>Apr</strong>il, 1985 to March,2000. From <strong>Apr</strong>il, 2000 he guided the <strong>Parishad</strong> as itsPatron.Justice Khanna served as the Hon’ble Judge of the SupremeCourt of India from 1971 to 1977 known for his courage andindependence in decisions. At the height of the Emergency, the darkesthour of Indian democracy, at the cost of his own career he stood like arock for citizens’ rights. He became a beacon and a symbol of selflesscourage and lion-hearted resolve to stand up for dharma, the rule oflaw, without regard to personal consequences. On being supersededfor appointment as Chief Justice of India, he resigned from the Judicialservice.The New York Times observed in an editorial dated <strong>Apr</strong>il 30,1976,”If India ever finds its way back to freedom and democracy, thatproud hallmark of its first 18 years, someone will surely erect amonument to Justice H.R. Khanna of the Supreme Court of India."An Eminent Jurist and a Constitutional Expert, he authored twobooks, Making of India's Constitution and Neither Roses nor Thorns(autobiography).
