SUMMARY INFORMATIONPOST: CONSULTANT IN NEUROLOGY (10PA’s)BASE: SOUTHERN GENERAL HOSPITAL, GLASGOWThis post will be <strong>based</strong> <strong>at</strong> the Department of Neurology, Southern General Hospital. THE NEW SOUTH GLASGOW HOSPITALS CAMPUSThe new South Glasgow Hospitals Campus will deliver a truly gold standard ofhealthcare on the Govan site with m<strong>at</strong>ernity, children’s and adult acute servicesall together on the one campus. It will also have the biggest Critical Care complexand one of the biggest Emergency Departments <strong>in</strong> Scotland. A new Labor<strong>at</strong>oryand Facilities Management Build<strong>in</strong>g is also part of the project, and is currentlyunder construction.New Adult HospitalThe plans for the complex will see a brand new 14-floor adult hospital with 1109beds and st<strong>at</strong>e of the art Emergency, Acute Receiv<strong>in</strong>g, Critical Care, The<strong>at</strong>resand Diagnostic Services. The facility will offer acute specialist <strong>in</strong>p<strong>at</strong>ient care,medical day case services and also outp<strong>at</strong>ient cl<strong>in</strong>ics servic<strong>in</strong>g the localpopul<strong>at</strong>ion.New Children’s HospitalA brand new children’s hospital, with a separ<strong>at</strong>e identity and entrance, will beadjo<strong>in</strong>ed to the adult hospital. With 256 beds over five storeys it will replace theexist<strong>in</strong>g Royal Hospital for Sick Children.The Children’s Hospital will provide a large number of specialist services to theWest of Scotland and the wider popul<strong>at</strong>ion of Scotland <strong>in</strong> addition to the full rangeof secondary care services to people of Gre<strong>at</strong>er Glasgow and Clyde. Specialistservices <strong>in</strong>clude: cardiology and cardiac surgery, renal and bone marrowtransplant<strong>at</strong>ion. For a number of these specialised services, the Children’sHospital is recognised as the sole provider <strong>in</strong> Scotland. The new children’shospital will not only be l<strong>in</strong>ked to the adult hospital but also to the redevelopedm<strong>at</strong>ernity hospital.New Labor<strong>at</strong>ory and Facilities Management Build<strong>in</strong>gDue to open <strong>in</strong> March 2012, the labor<strong>at</strong>ory will accommod<strong>at</strong>e blood sciences,p<strong>at</strong>hology, genetics, microbiology, postmortem and mortuary services. TheInstitute is equipped with a Magnetic Resonance Imag<strong>in</strong>g Suite, SPECT Scanner,two Computerised Axial Tomography Scanners, and angiography facilities. TheInstitute has ICU, HDU and outp<strong>at</strong>ient facilities and also houses ENT and Oral &Maxillofacial Services.Sp<strong>in</strong>al Injuries UnitThe Queen Elizabeth N<strong>at</strong>ional Sp<strong>in</strong>al Injuries Unit for Scotland provides a sp<strong>in</strong>al<strong>in</strong>juries service to the whole of Scotland. This is housed <strong>in</strong> a purpose-builtfacility.


University L<strong>in</strong>ksThe Southern General Hospital has built a sound academic and research baseover the years, and has an excellent teach<strong>in</strong>g reput<strong>at</strong>ion with libraries and lecturesuites with comprehensive audio/visual facilities on site. There are close l<strong>in</strong>kswith the University of Glasgow's Faculty of Medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Professors with<strong>in</strong>Neurosciences.4. WORK OF THE DEPARTMENTThe Neurology Department provides services for the West of Scotland <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g:NHS Gre<strong>at</strong>er Glasgow and Clyde, Ayrshire & Arran, Lanarkshire, and WesternIsles. The Glasgow services are <strong>based</strong> <strong>at</strong> the Institute of Neurological Sciences(INS) while regional services are provided on an outreach model.There are currently twenty <strong>consultant</strong> posts of which three are academic.There is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>consultant</strong> sub-specialis<strong>at</strong>ion and current sub-specialities<strong>in</strong>clude epilepsy, MS, muscle, neuro-genetics, movement disorders, stroke,headache, the dementias and peripheral neurop<strong>at</strong>hy. Research <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> theacademic department are neuro-virology, neuro-immunology and stroke, and anumber of members of the cl<strong>in</strong>ical department also have research programmes.In Glasgow <strong>in</strong>-p<strong>at</strong>ient <strong>neurology</strong> is <strong>based</strong> on two wards <strong>in</strong> INS. The total numberof beds is 49, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g three video EEG beds, and four acute stroke unit beds <strong>in</strong>the <strong>neurology</strong> ward with plans to <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with Medic<strong>in</strong>e for theElderly. Out-p<strong>at</strong>ient facilities are also loc<strong>at</strong>ed with<strong>in</strong> the Institute of NeurologicalSciences. The build<strong>in</strong>g also accommod<strong>at</strong>es maxillo-facial surgery and ENT units.The department <strong>at</strong> present has 14 accredited tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g posts rang<strong>in</strong>g from FY2 toSpR. Numbers will change, with the bulk of tra<strong>in</strong>ees <strong>at</strong> ST3 level and above.The work of the <strong>neurology</strong> department is supported by: a department of cl<strong>in</strong>icalneurophysiology (five <strong>consultant</strong>s); a department of neuroradiology (seven<strong>consultant</strong>s); and a department of neurop<strong>at</strong>hology (two <strong>consultant</strong>s).5. THE JOB ITSELF(a) Title: Consultant <strong>in</strong> NeurologyThis job constitutes of 10 PAs, <strong>based</strong> on a 9:1 session templ<strong>at</strong>e. One support<strong>in</strong>gprofessional activity (SPA) is now the advertised standard for all new <strong>consultant</strong>job plans with<strong>in</strong> NHSGG&C. The one SPA m<strong>in</strong>imum will reflect activity such asappraisal, personal audit and professional development occurr<strong>in</strong>g outside studyleave time as well as limited time for other activities. Once the candid<strong>at</strong>e hasbeen appo<strong>in</strong>ted more SPA time may be agreed for activities such asundergradu<strong>at</strong>e and postgradu<strong>at</strong>e medical tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g which takes place outside directcl<strong>in</strong>ical care, as well as research and/or management.
