7. <strong>Gifted</strong> Student IdentificationStudent evaluation for gifted screening will be accomplished in accordance with thepolicies outlined in the <strong>Okaloosa</strong> <strong>County</strong> School District, Exceptional Student Education Policies<strong>and</strong> Procedures (Reference 3). Kenwood faculty members will receive training on theidentification of gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students at least annually. The checklist provided inAttachment A (Reference 4) will be provided to each teacher during pre-planning meetings.In February <strong>and</strong> March 2012, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test was administered toapproximately 180 Kenwood students. At the publication of this plan, we have not received theresults of those tests. Once the results are received, we will conduct further screenings usingthe Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test 2 (KBIT-2) to identify gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students forinclusion in our 2012-2013 <strong>GATE</strong> classes.8. <strong>GATE</strong> Class Schedules<strong>GATE</strong> classes are held once each week (on Wednesdays) in the Technology Lab & MediaCenter with instruction provided by a gifted-endorsed teacher. The 2012-2013 <strong>GATE</strong> classschedule is:∙∙8:40 – 11:00 2 nd & 3 rd Grade <strong>GATE</strong> Class11:00 – 3:10 4 th & 5 th Grade <strong>GATE</strong> Class (25 minute lunch period included)Students in 2 nd <strong>and</strong> 3 rd grades attend <strong>GATE</strong> class for 2 hours <strong>and</strong> 20 minutes each week.Students in 4 th <strong>and</strong> 5 th grades attend <strong>GATE</strong> class for 3 hours <strong>and</strong> 35 minutes each week.As a result of increased student screening described above, these class schedules maybe adjusted if there is an increase in the number of students identified as gifted.9. Professional DevelopmentAll <strong>GATE</strong> teachers will participate in recurring professional development activitiesspecifically designed for gifted instruction. All Kenwood faculty members will receive training inthe identification of gifted <strong>and</strong> talented students at least annually. The <strong>GATE</strong> programcoordinator will also assist classroom teachers with providing enrichment opportunities withintheir classroom instructional units.
