Historically, the airline industry has deliveredcollective losses when GDP growth(measured using current exchangerates) falls below 2.0%. GDP growthhas fallen from 3.9% in 2010, to anexpected 2.5% this year and 2.4% isprojected for 2012.“Airlines are bracing for toughtimes ahead. Economic uncertaintyowing to the European sovereign debtcrisis and the growing likelihood ofa protracted period of slow growthin developed economies mean theindustry will be even more focusedon reducing costs and improvingefficiency. To ensure that airlines cancontinue to catalyze economic activity,we need governments to review theoften onerous tax burden that theyplace on aviation,” said Tyler.Last week the UK governmentdecided to reduce long-haul AirPassenger Duty (APD) for NorthernIreland to short-haul levels. “APD isthe biggest tax that we face anywherein the world. Reducing APD forNorthern Ireland is a clear recognitionof the economic damage that it does. But why stop with Northern Ireland? The competitiveness of the entireUK transport sector is suffering. Asa priority, the same reduction mustnow be made for the whole of the UK,for the benefit of the UK. This wouldprovide a much needed boost to theUK economy, businesses and travellerswith more competitive connectivity,”said Tyler.Porter extendsnetwork with newservice from BillyBishop to Burlington& TimminsPorter Airlines is expanding itsreach this winter and beyond withnew seasonal service to Burlington,Vermont and Timmins, Ontario from10 Travelweek October 20, 2011

We’renot stopping development altogether, however, we’re just being very selectiveand doing it slowly.”This approach is reflective of Aruba’sfine attention to detail – rather thanmass building, the Tourism Authoritywould rather perfect what it has now, which according to many is alreadysynonymous with high-end luxury. To further drive this point home, the government has just launchedthe new Aruba Certification Programto train locals in the hospitality andtourism industries. The four-moduleprogram called “Your Commitment”takes approximately three weeksto complete, at the end of whichgraduates will receive accreditedcertification.“Tourism is about so much morethan just economics,” added Asjoe-Croes. “It is also about sharinghospitality in the light of the goodfortunes Arubans meet in their dailylives. Arubans can and should beproud of what the island has to offer. We need to be eager to explore newpotential based on our pride of ourisland and what it has to offer.”And when asked what Aruba offerstravellers that other Caribbean islandsdon’t?“Aruba has the beaches and the sunand the resorts, but that’s a given,”she answered. “What scored veryhigh with visitors were safety and thefriendliness of the people. According to myguide Alvaro Matorel, who’s livedin Cartagena his entire life, Crucitais 84 years old and has for 71 yearsbeen selling her candied treats in the32 Travelweek October 20, 2011Portal of Sweets, a long pedestrianwalkway in Cartagena’s Old Citythat’s dedicated solely to satisfyingthe sweet tooth. It was obvious by theway Matorel spoke of her that Crucitais considered somewhat of a locallegend in these parts, beloved by allwith plenty of stories to tell, much likethe city itself.Nolitours, which is offering packagesand direct service from Torontoand Montreal starting in December, recently hosted a media fam thatshowcased the many reasons whyCartagena, Colombia should not beoverlooked this winter season. Asidefrom its nearly 500-year-old history, which according to Matorel propelledthe development of South Americaas a whole, Cartagena has much tooffer travellers including the freshestseafood imaginable, long stretches ofbeach and bustling courtyards wherelive dancing and music can be enjoyedon any given night. The city’s top attraction by far is itsOld City, a UNESCO World HeritageSite. Here, visitors will find narrowstreets filled with fresh fruit vendors, colourful buildings embellished withornate iron doorknockers, upscaleboutiques standing side by side withsouvenir shops, and old fortified wallsthat once protected the city frominvading French, Dutch and Englisharmies. It’s the kind of place wheregetting lost would be considered agood thing, for at every corner there’salways something special to see. Also not to be missed is Fort SanFelipe, a massive red brick fortressbuilt by the Spaniards in 1657 to guardagainst unwelcome pirates. Oncespanning a total of 11 kilometres, thefort today stretches only eight alongthe perimeter of the city. Visitors canactually walk on top of the walls forpanoramic views – young couples inlove now occupy the windows andcrevices where soldiers once stood onguard. For the ultimate view, however, there’s only place to go – La PopaMonastery, built in 1607 and locatedatop Cartagena’s highest peak (150metres). A small entrance fee allowsvisitors to browse through ancientChristian relics and stroll throughthe monastery’s old wooden church, which was last restored in 1964.If your clients are looking to geta little dirty, suggest a day trip to ElTotumo mud volcano, located 45minutes from downtown Cartagena. This mighty – or rather muddy –attraction is 100 metres deep andspans three metres at its peak, givingguests plenty of room to enjoy a mudbath. Purported to have therapeuticqualities, the mud contains sulphur, magnesium and calcium, among otherminerals, and feels cool and refreshingagainst the skin. A soak in a nearbylagoon completes this unconventionalspa treatment.Hotel accommodations inCartagena are varied and plentifulwith Nolitours, which offers the fourand a half star Occidental GrandCartagena, the almost all-inclusiveHotel Caribe, as well as all-inclusiveDecameron properties both on themainland and off shore.Though situated further away fromthe Old City (about 30 minutes),the all-inclusive Occidental Grand
