St. Philip’s Academy seeks to provide a
RIGOROUS academic and moral education
to elementary and middle school children of
the City of Newark and its environs.
St.Philip’s, a school in the Episcopal tradition,
strives to create within its students a love of
learning, an intellectual CURIOSITY, and a
sense of duty to the COMMUNITY that will
enable them to make THOUGHTFUL and
morally informed decisions throughout their
lives. LEADERSHIP qualities are developed in
a culturally DIVERSE experience. The School
exists to provide a unique educational
opportunity for capable students,
REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITY TO PAY,
enabling them upon graduation to be
successful in the most selective secondary
schools in the nation. We seek to provide a
MODEL of educational excellence, thereby
contributing to the revitalization of the City
of Newark.
Dear Friends of St. Philip’s Academy:
Thank you once again for making it possible for deserving children to
receive an education that will transform not only their own lives, but
will serve as a lightning rod about the possibilities for human growth
and development for all children.
Education at St. Philip’s is not just about knowledge, but wisdom. It is
not just about test scores, but judgment. It is about more than
comprehension, it is about analysis, evaluation, and creation. It
depends upon experiential learning, genuine problem solving, and
multiple and varied abilities. Education at St. Philip’s is continually
about the quest for human experiences that allow for the growth of
true intelligence, while promoting effective citizenship in a
democratic society.
It is, however, only through your generosity and faith that we are able
to bring students an education in which they can fully engage
themselves. Ideally, students should find joy in their studies,
participate eagerly and attentively in class, and complete assignments
thoroughly and with enthusiasm, while finding meaning in the
multitude of activities put before them. This only happens when
children go to school in a community that believes and has confidence
in them, as well as one which has developed the ability to connect
with each individual student, socially, culturally, and emotionally.
Over the last twenty years we have maintained our commitment to
love as a basis of state, which has led to our great achievements.
St. Philip’s Academy works as a school and as a community, because
we have been able to work together to secure a common good. Now
in our third decade of accomplishment we will continue to keep our
focus on excellence, integrity, and our responsibility to one another.
Every day I go to work knowing I am joined by many good people
who care about justice and opportunity. I thank each of you for taking
the time to make a difference for the children of Newark.
Sincerely,
Miguel J. Brito
St. Philip’s continued to expand its sphere into new domains. Community building efforts
such as Horizons National bring public school students to our campus for summer and
Saturday enrichment and we bring our resources to others as we bring a
culinary and life skills program to teenagers at risk at 2009
St. Philip’s enrollment had grown to nearly 300 students, the New York
Times reported St. Philip’s graduates were highly sought after by top
secondary schools, including St. Paul’s, Lawrenceville,
and Taft. The school establishes the Secondary
School Scholarship Fund that ensures all
students funding and creates the
Family Support Fund for
families in crisis.
2004
St. Philip’s enrollment swelled to over 140 students,
graduates were being accepted at top boarding and
1996
day schools, & the demand for the rigorous elementary education
became overwhelming. St. Philip’s had to grow in order to
serve the community’s need. St. Philip’s acquired a
building in Newark’s downtown arts district.
St. Philip’s launched its Eco-SPACES program, a co-curricular hands-on learning
program, including a rooftop garden and teaching kitchen, that seeks to teach the
interconnectedness of all living systems, including the health and wellness of our bodies
and minds through gardening, cooking, community meals, health
instruction, environmental awareness, physical exercise and
broad curricular integration.
2008
2000
The baton of leadership was passed to Miguel Brito,
as Head of School. In his first year the Annual Fund
grew, surpassing $1 million mark for the first time,
enrollment reached 210 students, and an anonymous gift of
$1,000,000.00 was received,
changing the nature of
financial aid at the Academy
St. Timothy’s House.
2010
On the horizon is an aquaponic environment where students
learn about the symbiotic relationship between plants and aquatic
animals, while growing food for consumption. We are also excited
about our pilot science and math program with Verizon where
students will use handheld technology both at school and at home to
carry out their assignments.
St. Philip’s acquired, designed, built and occupied a new physical
plant, a former chocolate factory, the new site offered over 55,000
square feet of classroom space, advanced technology, a full size
gymnasium/auditorium, a series of rooftop gardens, a full service
cafeteria and age appropriate outdoor play areas. The building was
designed to meet the US Green Council’s LEED Silver Certification.
Enrollment grew to over 350 students.
St. Philip’s Academy opened with 10 first grade students
under the tutelage of Head of School Dr. Maureen Fonseca,
each year the Academy added a grade.
A local philantropist offered two full scholarships for
Newark students to attend his alma mater, St. Paul’s
School in Concord, NH. When no one qualified the Dean
and members of Newark’s Trinity & St. Philip’s Cathedral
opened a school to prepare inner city students to succeed.
“I grew up in Washington, CT, one of five children. My dad didn’t have a
lot of money, but at 14, I was given the opportunity to attend The Gunnery
School. I was further able to realize a boyhood dream when I was accepted
at Yale University four years later. When I support St. Philip’s Academy I’m
giving young boys and girls the same opportunity that was given to me: A
chance to broaden my interests, expand my horizons, and perhaps make a
positive contribution to the world we live in.”
“One afternoon a long-time friend, my wife and I crossed paths
when we were given an invitation to come to see a small school
called ‘St. Philips Academy.’ On a warm sunny Friday afternoon,
Earth Day April 24, 2009, we parked the car, walked across the
street and entered into a place of wisdom, wonder and unending
possibilities! Minutes into touring the Academy, we knew we had
met a group of people who were changing the lives of children in
ways my late parents would have embraced with open hearts. Although
my wife’s feet still haven’t touched the ground after meeting
Rebecca Cole and seeing the rooftop garden, since that day we
have been honored to join in supporting those who, each day, will
e ve
change lives forever.”
TRUSTEES
Dear Friends of St. Philip’s Academy:
As I write this letter it has been only a week since the devastating
earthquake in Haiti. The St. Philip’s Academy community
immediately reacted to help the people of Haiti, staging, among other
initiatives, a fund raising basketball game by St. Philip’s own Falcons.
The outpouring of concern and support by faculty, parents and
especially students was typical of the spirit that is St. Philip’s. Most
of the people of the St. Philip’s community have limited means and a
large segment has been hit hard by the Great Recession.
Yet the people of St. Philip’s look beyond themselves. Our students
grow in an educational environment that teaches academics in the
context of values – the understanding by each student that he or she
has a duty to serve the greater good.
For me that is part of the magic of St. Philip’s. For each of us who
support the school, we are supporting not just an event or an exhibit
or something for ourselves, we are enabling young men and women
to build the academic and social foundation to have productive and
giving lives that will enrich our society. By supporting these students
in the formative years of their academic life, we empower them not
merely to complete high school and aspire to college, we provide
them the opportunity to excel in secondary school and achieve
excellence in college.
St. Philip’s Annual Report for 2008-2009 highlights many of the
initiatives the school has undertaken. As we celebrate our twenty
year anniversary, we recognize, these initiatives were made possible
by all of you who make St. Philips part of your program of giving.
Particularly exciting is our EcoSPACES program, and I invite each of
you to come to the school and see what EcoSPACES is all about. On
behalf of the school and our Board of Trustees, I thank all of you for
your support of St. Philip’s Academy and our children.
Sincerely,
Gerald C. Harvey
