A n n u a lR e p o r t2 0 0 5Our VisionWe believe in a Canada where strong and vital charitable and nonprofitorganizations, the private sector and governments work together for social progressand vibrant communities. Our MissionAdvancing knowledge and relationships to foster effective and sustainable charitableand nonprofit organizations. Our ValuesWe are ETHICAL.We are COLLABORATIVE.We are INCLUSIVE.We are ACCOUNTABLE.

A n n u a lR e p o r t2 0 0 5As I reflect back on Imagine Canada’s first year, I am inspired by what wehave learned about ourselves and our role in the charitable and nonprofitsector. I am also proud of how this new organization, in only one year, hasbroadened its scope and worked to realize its vision: strong and vital charitable andnonprofit organizations, the private sector, and governments working together forsocial progress and vibrant communities. In 2005, we established new offices in Ottawa and Calgary – a move thatdemonstrates this new organization’s commitment to a pan-Canadian approach tobuilding an effective and sustainable sector. By continuing to engage our members, our governments, our supporters, and our partners across the country, we willcontinue our work on behalf of the charities and nonprofits that touch every aspectof our lives.I am grateful for the support of my fellow directors this year, and wouldespecially like to acknowledge the contributions of the senior volunteerswho left the board in 2005: Marilyn De Mara, Mayann Francis, DaleGodsoe, Allan Lefever, Faye Porter, and Lucie Rémillard. Thank youfor helping us build something special.Congratulations to Georgina Steinsky-Schwartz and thededicated staff at Imagine Canada. It’s been quite a year!Ted GarrardChair of the Board

A n n u a lR e p o r t2 0 0 5It’s been quite a year indeed: a new name; releases of groundbreaking researchincluding a report that showed Canada has the second largest charitable and nonprofitsector in the world; representations to both the Senate’s Finance and Anti-TerrorismCommittees and to the Gomery Inquiry; success in getting commitment from four majorpolitical parties of the importance of the sector during the federal election, and theestablishment of new offices in Ottawa and Calgary. While we accomplished a lot, I’ve alwaysmaintained, though, that “how” we do things is as important as the “what”.This organization was built on the principles of partnership and collaboration; these principleshave informed and guided our work throughout our first year, and will contribute to oursuccess in years to come. The Imagine Canada – John Hodgson Library and the VoluntarySector Awareness Project are both examples of how we have partnered to increase accessto resources and build awareness about the sector. We also celebrated innovative projectsbetween businesses and charities and nonprofits through our Community Partnership Awardsin the fall of 2005.It is impossible to work in isolation – businesses, governments, and individual Canadians eachplay a role in building communities and maintaining a healthy democracy. Through our Ottawaoffice, Imagine Canada will continue to inform the decisions of government. Our Toronto andCalgary offices will develop more signature research on the sector, build the bodyof knowledge on volunteering, and work with business, charities and nonprofitsacross the country to encourage them to support the communities in whichthey operate.I thank our board of directors for their leadership and governancethroughout the year. To the partners, funders, and friends withwhom we have worked closely in 2005, and in particularthe staff at Imagine Canada, I appreciate your insight, accomplishments, and commitment to the mission ofour new organization.Thank you!Georgina Steinsky-SchwartzPresident and CEO

A n n u a lR e p o r t2 0 0 5As we began shaping the organization that would become Imagine Canada, wehad one goal in mind: to create an organization that would help our communitiesremain vibrant and sustainable. In 2005, we got the chance to do just that.Working in partnership has been a hallmark of Imagine Canada’s first year. Our longstandingassociation with renowned civil society experts at Johns Hopkins University resulted in thepublication of our new study that showed that Canada has the second largest charitableand nonprofit sector in the world. This signature research was released at our InternationalSymposium in early Spring 2005, attended by delegates from Canada, the United States,Australia, Norway, and France. Later in the year, we hosted our Community PartnershipAwards, an annual celebration of innovative collaborations between members of our CaringCompany program and nonprofit organizations. This year, the Imagine Canada – John Hodgson Library expanded both its collection andreach, increasing access to 6000 resources and information about the sector in Canadaand around the world. In the fall of 2005, a group of project partners which includedImagine Canada published a report as part of the Voluntary Awareness Project outliningthe benefits and challenges of creating a “unified voice” for the voluntary sector. Thisreport will inform a nationwide public awareness campaign scheduled for 2006.Throughout the year, the Knowledge Development Centre at Imagine Canada continuedto fund and publish research on various aspects of volunteering and volunteerism.More than 25 new resources were released in 2005, and can be accessed via theImagine Canada – John Hodgson Library at www.nonprofitscan.ca, or the KnowledgeDevelopment Centre’s website at www.kdc-cdc.ca.

A n n u a lR e p o r t2 0 0 5Imagine Canada realized many accomplishments in the public policy arena this year. We workedhard to help government understand why strong and sustainable charities and nonprofits arekey to the success of our country. Through our new office in Ottawa, we submitted briefs tothe House of Commons Finance Committee, the Commission of Inquiry into the SponsorshipProgram and Advertising Activities, and the Senate’s Anti-Terrorism Committee. We worked in the nation’s capital to bring attention to sector issues during the federalelection campaign in late 2005. All four major political parties made a commitmentrecognizing the importance of the charitable and nonprofit sector in Canada. To increase our presence in Western Canada and to better engage with our members inthat region, Imagine Canada established a new office in Calgary thanks to the supportof EnCana Corporation. Staff in our first western office worked closely with members ofour Caring Company program and charities and nonprofits, and led Imagine Canada’smarketing and communications team throughout 2005.We’ve learned and accomplished a great deal in our first year, but our work has justbegun. Imagine Canada will continue to develop as an acknowledged force of expertiseon issues touching charitable and nonprofit organizations across this country, and willwork to ensure that they are supported and appreciated even more than they are today.Everyone has a place in the sector – businesses, governments, and individual Canadianseach play a role in sustaining the organizations that touch our lives every day. Imaginewhat this country could be if we all worked even closer together.
