Gumushane has the highest proporti<strong>on</strong> of land suitable<br />

for tillage farm<strong>in</strong>g (37.78%), and Rize has the lowest<br />

(3.02%). Although the total area of the lands <strong>in</strong> the regi<strong>on</strong><br />

suitable for tillage farm<strong>in</strong>g is 469,987 ha, tillage farm<strong>in</strong>g is<br />

practiced <strong>on</strong> an area of 946,737 ha, mean<strong>in</strong>g that 50.4%<br />

of tillage farm<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> the regi<strong>on</strong> is practiced <strong>on</strong><br />

unsuitable land (Askın and Tarakcıoglu, 2005).<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>An</str<strong>on</strong>g>alyz<strong>in</strong>g the regi<strong>on</strong>al topography <strong>in</strong> terms of slope, it<br />

is found that 1% of the area is flat, 0.6% has a gentle<br />

slope, 2.1% have moderate slope, 6.4% are steep, 20.6%<br />

of them are very steep and 69.3% of them are rugged.<br />

Gümüşhane has the highest proporti<strong>on</strong> of flat land <strong>in</strong> the<br />

regi<strong>on</strong> (75%), while Trabz<strong>on</strong> has the lowest (2.8%)<br />

(KHGM, 2011). Regi<strong>on</strong>al climatic data for 1975 to 2010<br />

(35 years) (Figure 2) shows that the cities <strong>in</strong> the regi<strong>on</strong><br />

generally experience drought dur<strong>in</strong>g July and August.<br />

While possible frost is seen <strong>on</strong> the coast of Ordu,<br />

Giresun, Trabz<strong>on</strong>, Rize and Arv<strong>in</strong> cities until April <strong>in</strong><br />

spr<strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong> fall, frost is seen after the sec<strong>on</strong>d half of<br />

September. In Gumushane, frost may occur until May.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the l<strong>on</strong>g-term data, the highest annual<br />

precipitati<strong>on</strong> of 2250.9 mm occurred <strong>in</strong> Rize, followed by<br />

respectively Giresun (1269.3 mm), Ordu (1046.6 mm),<br />

Trabz<strong>on</strong> (831.3 mm), Artv<strong>in</strong> (719.4 mm) and Gumushane<br />

(467.7 mm). Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the l<strong>on</strong>g-term data, annual<br />

average temperature was as follows: Giresun and<br />

Trabz<strong>on</strong> 14.5°C, Ordu 14.3°C, Rize 14.2°C, Artv<strong>in</strong> 12.0°C<br />

and Gumushane 9.5°C.
