April is full of activities and events at the club, for members of all
ages!
The annual visit from the Easter Bunny is April 7th and for the adults, the amazing,
decadent Easter Buffet on April 8th.
The golf course is green and beautiful with the trees blooming and the flowers
bright and radiant from the spring rains.
Meals are being served weekly, with foods from all ethnic backgrounds and special
events like the wine paring dinners which in April will feature wines from
Westbend Vineyards in Lewisville, NC.
Did you know that April 10th is National Siblings and Golfer’s Day? Make your tee
times now to treat your siblings to a round of golf!
Clubs such as the FORS (Forest Oaks Retired Seniors), Bridge, Tennis, FOLGA
(Forest Oaks Ladies Golf Association) are meeting and new members are always
welcome!
At Forest Oaks, there is always something going on for you to enjoy. Start your
spring out by joining in the fun! It will put a spring in your step and a smile on
your face!
Sympathy
The Forest Oaks family extends our deepest sympathy to James Weinel and his
family in the loss of his wife, Solveig Weinel. Solveig was an avid golfer here at
Forest Oaks, and sadly lost her battle with cancer in March. Please remember
this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.

We have welcomed several new members to the club this past month. Our Paired Membership
Program with it’s great rates, has helped to peak interest from people thinking about joining the
club and spur those that are already members, into finding a friend to join so that they can
get in on the much lower dues!
Forest Oaks has so much to offer to anyone interested in a great place to dine, play and socialize.
We remain the lowest priced, full amenity country club in our area.

Hello to the Forest Oaks family! Thank you so much for the warm welcome I have received.
Spring is here and the Bermuda grass is showing its true color!
The weather has produced some great golf conditions and some maintenance challenges, but I
assure you the golf conditions are our number one priority.
In the upcoming months, our main focus will be on weed control in the fairways, green surrounds,
roughs and fescue areas.
I would also like to remind everyone of the greens aerification that will be taking place on April 23rd
thorough April 26th. This necessary process will help our greens through the tough summer months
and ensure a great putting surface throughout.
I look forward to seeing you on the golf course as we gear up for a successful season at Forest
Oaks!

Women’s Golf
Calling All Ladies !
Are you interested in playing and learning to play golf
with a fun group of fellow learners?
Some of our lady golfers have started a new golfing group called
“Twilight Lady Golfers”
They will be playing on select Wednesday evenings throughout the season at 5:30.
There will be no winners and no losers and you don’t even have to keep score
if you don’t want to! Hit a bad shot? Pick up your ball!
Everyone is there to have a fun evening and improve their game along the way!
The first event is planned for April 11 th at 5:30.
The second one will be on May 2 nd at 5:30.

Learning to swim in my family consisted of my dad driving our boat out into the middle of either Lake Erie or the Niagara
River and tossing us over the side. Oh, and there was a “safety” rope dangling from a cleat in case we panicked. I
am approaching my April article in the same way- get busy swimmin’, or get busy pulling yourself in on a rope! Which
translates in English to; join us for some great events this month, or be booed by people on shore!
All of the pedigree info for our events this month are scattered throughout this newsletter and on several e-mails you
have, and will, receive from me. The Easter Bunny will be here the 7 th for the morning of our egg hunt and Saturday
Easter Breakfast and for Easter Sunday Brunch on the 8th. A Perfect time to bring the kids, grandkids, or even rentals,
to enjoy a fun-filled morning and a delicious breakfast and buffet! The Easter Bunny, though without speech, has assured
me that photo ops, high 5’s and hugs will be plenty available!
Chef and I are heading to Westbend Vineyards this week for some R&D (research and development) for our Saturday,
April 21 st Wine Dinner (at 7pm). Westbend Vineyards is one of the few vineyards in NC to make very reputable and impressive
wine (and now beer!) and we are excited to be part of changing the face and reputation of North Carolina wine.
Did you know that in 2011, NC posted over $1 Billion in wine sales? In 2010 the state was 9 th overall in American wine
production and gaining on Missouri.
Attendance for the Wine Event is limited to 40 guests, so please make your reservations ASAP! We will have the menu
available as soon as the R&D is complete. Please continue to check your emails and message boards for details!
SPECIAL NOTE:
In your statements for the month of April you will find a survey included from the Food & Beverage Department. We
continually aim to put the highest quality of product in front of you and we are interested in your feedback for some
future events and menus we are planning. We may possibly be restructuring our Thursday evening dinner service to
better suit our guests. Please take a minute and fill the survey out and turn it in and not only will your voice be heard,
but you will automatically be entered into a drawing to win fabulous prizes!! Yes, fabulous!

We will begin our monthly tournaments on April 4 th and the first one will be played as a Captains
Choice. The signup sheet is posted on the board. Mike Edens, Tournament Chairman, has a great
schedule planned for this year. If you have any suggestions for different tournaments please discuss
them with Mike.
The mild weather this winter has led to more play from our group than normal for this time of the
year. The total point’s board shows many players with a good start, as does the Ringer Board
game. Start now and begin building up your points and score. The course has wintered exceptionally
well and is great shape. We have a core group of ten to fourteen members playing regularly and
are looking forward to seeing more of you soon.
Remember the FORS normal tee times have been changed to 9:00 am. The summer schedule start
time will begin on April 23 rd and we will begin play at 8:30 for the remainder of the summer period.
The schedule will be to arrive at 8:00 to sign in, have the draw for teams at 8:15, and then tee off
at 8:30. Normal play days will be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, unless otherwise notified.
Be sure to check the signup sheets posted on the bulletin board for any changes. Chuck Jensen
will also attempt to contact everyone via email to let you know of any others. Remember also
that our normal tee times are based on the number of players that have signed up to play that day,
so don’t be left out, “Sign Up”.
We now have a plan to have an away play date once a month. Dan Cockman is in charge of this
and will make the arrangements. He will attempt to schedule the away date on a day we cannot
play Forest Oaks. If you have any suggested courses please let Dan know. He will post the signup
sheet as soon as he has a course scheduled. If you wish to play you must sign up at least two
days in advance so he will know how many tee times to request.
If you are retired, or practicing being retired, please come and join our group!

March was a great month for tennis
here at FOCC. A lot of you tennis
players were out earlier than usual
taking advantage of this unusual,
but great warm weather for this
time of year. The Junior Program
has really taken off this season and
we hope to continue that trend
throughout the remainder of this
year. Please come out and continue
to take advantage of this
great weather.
A big THANK YOU to our past tennis
pro Mike Corthum, for doing a
beautiful job on resurfacing our clay
courts and putting down the
lines. Mike worked here at the club
for over 25 years. I have heard
nothing but great things on how
they look and feel. We are very
appreciative for the great job that
Mike and his crew did.
We have made a lot of improvements
on and around the tennis
courts, so please come on out and
check out what we have to offer.

You can help support the tournament by playing in it or volunteering very
little of your time. We could also use a few more sponsors if you would like
to help in that fashion. Please come on out even just to watch some
matches and meet the players.
Gate City Ladies are starting back up, but will now be playing on Wednesdays
because they have moved up to Division II. In 2011 our ladies won
the Division III City Championship. We hope to have another successful
year.
Anyone can jump in and play - any session at anytime, and your price will be prorated if you start late in any session.
