PAGE 2Just a Thought...The donations have continuedto come in for our outreachefforts to assist the people ofHaiti. Many thanks to all ofyou who have been so generousto this special appeal. We havesent more than $25,000 to theCatholic Relief Services from thecontributions you have made.I mentioned last weekend at our Liturgies, many of us were feeling the need to do more;and indeed there is so much more to do forthe people of Haiti. We certainly know thiswill be a humanitarian effort for a long timecoming. Beth Marek, our director of SocialOutreach, presented a great idea we haveembraced at Old St. Pat’s. Together with agreat organization called Share Your Soles, weare appealing for gently used (or new) shoesto send to Haiti. Beth, along with Share YourSoles, knows one of the great practical needsof the people will be proper shoes to helpavoid any kind of further cuts or ailments tothe feet. Such injuries can cause infections,in addition to mobility issues that cancertainly add to people’s inability to accesswater, nourishment, and other neededprovisions. We are asking for your gym shoesand sandals, from toddlers to adults! Ourtruck will be in front of church to receiveyour donations on Sunday, Jan. 31 andSunday, Feb. 7. Beth has told us quarters, detergent, and bleach also would be helpfulin this effort so the shoes can be properlysanitized prior to shipping. And of course, wecan always use volunteers to join in thecleaning/packaging effort along with ShareYour Soles. Thank you again for alwaysresponding with such passionate generosity. Please remember in your prayers Dr. MarkRastetter, a young physician from Old St. Pat’swho left on Thursday with a medical team toassist in Haiti. Mark asked me for a blessingon Wednesday night before his departure; theblessing was from the people of Old St. Pat’s!If you have gone, or you are planning to go toHaiti to help, or know of others from Old St.Pat’s, please let us know. We would like tobless you as well as others for your greatmission work.Have a great week.Fr. COMMUNITY FAITH FORMATIONADULT SPIRITUALITYBeloved — An Amazing ExperienceFriday - Sunday, Feb. 19 - 21, 2010If you find yourself identifying with any of the reflections below from Beloved Retreat attendees, you may want toconsider taking a pause… give yourself a new start and a chance to begin again.Beloved is about the Holy Spirit in action. Somepeople find it a place to talk about their relationship withGod, or to find Church in a different way. I find it is not aceremonial Church but one that exists in the interactionbetween people. Beloved is the Church in action. It is aboutinvolvement and lets you ask the question, “how do I involvemyself in church rather than be a spectator?”Beloved openedspaces in my heart forGod to come through.Beloved offered genuine support that has allowed me topractice a virtue I was never very good at — patience. Itoccurred to me not only am I a Beloved child of God, buteveryone else is too.I went to Beloved notknowing one person thereand now a I am on the wayto becoming friends withall sorts of people.I once heard a folk song,“This is my country,” with BelovedI say, “This is my Church.”I will never give up onwhat Church really is. I amso grateful to have my eyesand ears opened. This wasan amazing experience.Save the date... the next Beloved Retreatexperience will take place Friday - Sunday,Feb. 19 - 21, 2010 at the University ofSt. COMMUNITY FAITH FORMATIONDEVELOPMENT2010 Archdiocesan Annual Catholic Appeal“…THEY LEFT EVERYTHING AND FOLLOWED HIM.”(LUKE 5:11)This week, you are asked to review the Annual Catholic Appealbrochure included in the Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 issue of TheCrossroads bulletin. The theme of the campaign is: “…they lefteverything and followed Him.” (Luke 5:11)The Apostles gave up everything to follow Jesus. You are notasked to do the same. Brigid of Ireland(religious founder,c.450 - c.525)Brigid was born near Kildarein Ireland. St. Patrick, withwhom Brigid developed aclose friendship, baptized her parents. Accordingto legend, her father was Dubhthach, an Irishchieftain; and her mother, Brocca, was a slave inhis court. When Brigid was young, she persuadedthe Druid master to set her sickly mother free soBrigid could follow her heart’s desire and give herlife to God.About the year 470, Brigid founded a doublemonastery at Kildare and was Abbess of theconvent, the first in Ireland. The foundationdeveloped into a center of learning and spirituality, and around it grew up the Cathedral city of Kildare. She founded a school of art at Kildare and itsilluminated manuscripts became famous, notablythe Book of Kildare, that was praised as one of thefinest of all illuminated Irish manuscripts before itsdisappearance three centuries ago.Brigid was one of the most remarkable women ofher times and many legends are told of her. One ofthe loveliest is that she helps to chase away thewinter and usher in the spring. Another story tellsof when she was only ten years old, she wouldgive food and clothing from her household to poorpeople. Providing for the poor was her mostimportant work, and she would often say,“What is mine is theirs.” There is no doubt herextraordinary spirituality, boundless charity, and endless compassion for those in distresswere genuine. When Brigid died, she was buried in Downpatrick, very close to the graves of St. Patrick and St.Columba, which was considered a great honor.Irish farmers pray to the former dairy worker toprotect their cattle from harm, and many Irishcottages display St. Brigid’s crosses, made ofstraw. In Ireland she is sometimes called St. Bride.Adapted from “Companion to the Calendar” byMary Ellen Hynes.20Please visit our Web site and the online gift shop at www.oldstpats.org.
