<strong>HS<strong>BC</strong></strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Visits</strong> <strong>Programs</strong>THE LEARNING EXPERIENCEField trips canenhance student’seducation by givingthem hands-onexperiences, theopportunity to seehistorically-significantobjects in person andask questions ofmuseum and archivesstaff who are expertsin their fields.Docent - Led<strong>Programs</strong>The Volunteer Docentwho leads your schoolprogram will meet yourgroup in the lobbyclosest to the GroupEntrance. They willprovide instruction inregards to coats,lunches and backpacks.The Volunteer Docentswill skillfully lead yourstudents through theprogram providing themwith hands-onexperiences and funlearning opportunities.Please refer to yourspecific Teacher’sGuide for more detailedinformation on programcontents and topredetermine yourstudent groups.We allow up to one adultchaperone per threestudents.Self-Directed <strong>Visits</strong>Self-directed visits canbe terrific experiencesfor your students. If youare bringing multipleclasses pleaseremember that entrytimes are scheduled forgroups of 30 studentsplus their chaperones at20 minute intervals.However you mayremain in the exhibits foras long as you need.We require one adultchaperone per fivestudents (grades K – 8),and one adult per 10students (grades 9 –12). <strong>HS<strong>BC</strong></strong> <strong>School</strong> <strong>Visits</strong> <strong>Programs</strong>144BEHAVIOUR GUIDELINESIt is important forstudents andchaperones tounderstand yourexpectations of theirbehaviour while theyare on a field trip.In addition to your ownrequirements, pleasereview the behaviourguidelines listed herewith your students andchaperones at schoolbefore you leave for the<strong>Royal</strong> <strong>BC</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> site.ChaperonesNot only are chaperonesresponsible for thebehaviour and safety ofthe students, they helpshape each student’slearning experienceduring the museum visit.It is helpful to givechaperones the handouton page six ahead of timeand review it with them.Sign and PrintYou must sign this pageon behalf of your classand present it with yourconfirmation letter inorder to pick up yourtickets.Signature:Date:<strong>School</strong>:It is important for allstudents follow thesesimple rules:1. Respect thethe exhibitionsand building.Use clipboardsto write against,instead of walls,windows or exhibitpanels. Don’t climbon the exhibits orreach inside ofthem.4. Keep food, drinksand gum outsidethe museumexhibitions.Visitors are notallowed to eat ordrink in the museumexhibitions. Foodmay only be eaten inthe designated lunchroom, Clifford CarlHall or outside onour picnic tables.5. The museumand IMAX are notresponsible for lost orstolen items.Photography PolicyPhotographs areallowed in themuseum’s permanentgalleries but we ask thatyou do not use a tripodand that you turn offyour flash to protect ourartifacts.Photographs may not beallowed in specialfeature exhibits – pleaseask if uncertain.Other InformationRestrooms and drinkingfountains can be foundon each floor.Assigning StudentGroupsPlease remember thatfor Docent Led Programvisits we accept one adultchaperone for every threestudents up to thecapacity of theclassroom. We havefound the bestexperience for thestudents in ourprograms comes bybreaking them intosmaller groups to rotatethrough the activitystations with a volunteerdocent. You may wishto pre-determine thegroups before your visit.Please refer to yourTeacher’s Guide for thenumber of groupsrequired.NametagsIf your school policyallows, all students,chaperones andteachers should wearnametags with theschool name. In orderto make students easilyidentifiable tochaperones we suggestyou colour code thenametags if possible.LunchesGroups are welcome tobring their lunches or toorder a lunch inadvance from the<strong>Museum</strong> Café.
