One should avoid saying “hi” toa woman because it is an expression which is onlyused by intimate friends. 82 However, saying “hello”would be permitted. 83Other ExpressionsOne is not allowed to ask a woman: How did youspend your Shabbos? Or what are your vacationplans? 84 Some say one who is walking in the streetand meets a woman he knows may ask about herfamily’s welfare since doing so is a nice gesture. 85Talking too Much to WomenIn the summer months it is very common for a manto talk to other women in the bungalow colony. However, one must be careful with this, since theGemorah in Berochos 86 says one should not talk alot with a woman in the street. The Mishnah inAvos 87 says one who does so causes himself harm. One is permitted to talk to a woman in a store, forexample, one who needs help with an item. 88However, only talk for this purpose is permitted anduseless conversation should be avoided. 89Acting in a Tznius Manner with one’s WifeIt is forbidden to show chibah (love) in public. 90Accordingly, holding hands in public is strictlyforbidden.SaddleDuring the summer, one of the activities camps taketheir campers to is horseback riding. 91 One must becareful when riding any animal to sit on a saddle. 92Sitting on an animal without a saddle can bring oneto a michshal in hilchos tznius. 93 One who is scaredof riding on a specific animal may ride without asaddle because the michshal in tznius is avoidedsince he is scared. 94 No saddle is needed if one issitting with both feet over one side of the animal. 95Hotel says “three occupants” and you bringfour!!Some times during the summer one goes with hisfamily on vacation and stays in a hotel. Halachically Speakingpermission one is in essence, using something forwhich he did not pay. 96Some say one is permitted to use the bathroom in ahotel lobby even if he is not staying there. 97Taking a towel etc. from the hotel room whenchecking out is stealing. 98Supermarket LinesOne who goes shopping with his wife may go on atwelve items or less line by giving a few items tohis wife. One who is concerned that people willthink something is wrong should not exit togetherwith his wife. 99A sign which says “limit three per family” isdifferent than the above situation, and one has to bestraight-forward about being part of the samefamily. 100One should not cut ahead of a line since doing so isstealing. 101 One who wants to go ahead of the linemust ask all the people in front of him permission togo in front of them. 102Breaking Something in a StoreMany times in the summer camps bring theircampers shopping and the campers think they cando what they want there. They throw items at eachother and in other wagons and many times thingsbreak. The following are the halachos that apply tothis issue. One who breaks a small item in a store (a yogurtetc.) should ask the cashier if he is obligated to pay.Since the cashiers are told to be nice and polite, chances are they will say you don’t have to pay. Ifan expensive item is broken one should speak to themanager, if he tells you that you don’t have to paythen you don’t have to pay and if he tells you thatyou do have to pay then you have to pay. 103Amusement ParkChanging the age of the child in order to get halfpriceon a ticket is stealing from the owners of theamusement park. 104Saving SeatsIn camps many times one wants to save a seat forhis friend (i.e. at a play) and the question comes upif doing so is permitted. If one does not pay forthese seats then one is permitted to save a seat forhis friend. 105 However, where there is a shortage ofseats one may not save a seat for his friend if doingso will casue someone else who came afterwardsnot to have a seat.Stopping to help someone with a Flat tireMany times while traveling to the country one seesa Jew on the side of the road with a flat tire etc. Thequestion arises if one who knows how to fix a flattire is obligated to stop and help him.The Posuk 106 tells us that one who sees a donkeyfalling underneath the packages he is carrying hasan obligation to help fix the load. 107 The reason is toteach us to have compassion on a creature. 108 Thereis a machlokes if this halacha applies to a person. 109Some say that this halacha only pertains to ananimal, and does not pertain to humans, 110 whilesome say it applies to a person as well. 111 Other96Horav Yisroel Belsky Shlita, see Rambam HilchosShechaynim 5:9, Pischei Choshen Sechiros 4:8:footnote 23.Refer to Mesechtas Bava Kama 20, Tofas 20b “eishunes,”Shulchan Aruch C.M. 363:3, Rama, Sma 14, MishpateiHatorah Bava Kama 33, Pischei Choshen Geneiva 7:1.97 Horav Yisroel Belsky Shlita. poskim say that the above halacha also applies to asituation where someone has a flat tire etc, 112 whileothers say that it does not apply to this situation. 113In any case, whether to help the person out is aserious question and one has to think if he can reallybe of help, 114 since the mitzvah of chesed stillapplies. 115One who sees a person carrying heavy packageswould be obligated to help him out because of themitzvah of chesed. 116Drinking too much WaterIt is brought in certain seforim that one should notdrink too much water because doing so makes oneforget his learning. 117 It is not clear how much waterone should refrain from. However, this inyun doesnot apply if it is very hot outside, or if one is goingon a trip, etc. 118Halachically SpeakingChinuch mitzvah 540, Betzel Hachuchma 4:125, see SeferChassidim 44.112 Refer to Emek Daver 22:4, Tov Yehoshua derch eretz16:9:page 72, Aruch Ha’shulchan C.M. 272:8, Pe’as Sudcha164, Chai Ha’Levi 1:115.113 Refer to Nefesh Kol Chai pages 270-271, Momon Yisroelpage 201:footnote 222.
