For the 22nd year, our annual Companion Walk was a huge success! Over 400 walkers, 250 dogs, a kitten, and a pigparticipated and strolled along the five kilometer trek and then returned to Wilson Park to partake in the games, food, vendorbooths, prizes, and silent auction. Congratulations to our dedicated Companion Walk committee and walkers for raising over$55,000! This is our main fundraiser of the year. We are able to achieve such remarkable numbers because of our friendswho walked, collected pledges, sponsored walkers, sponsored the event, promoted the event, donated prizes and provisions, and volunteered their time. Congratulations to the Granite City Pet Hospital for winning the Companion Walk VetChallenge! Their clinic raised $600 in pledges with the help of their staff and clients. FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORIn this issue I bring to you some very exciting news!! We are finally going to be able to spay and neuter100% of the animals before they are adopted. How are we going to be able to do this and why haven’t webeen doing it before? The Board has unanimously decided to convert our current training building into asurgical center. Let me share some of the history and reasoning behind this decision. We’ve been struggling to get more and more spay/neuter surgeries done in our current surgery and examroom. Every year we come close to doubling the number of surgeries we’ve done the previous year. Goodstable growth, but while doing so, we get behind on exams because the exam room is also the surgery room. This contributes to animals not being available for adoption in a timely manner. The length of an animal’s stay in a shelter isvery relative to their physical and mental well-being. Taking measures to shorten the time between their arrival and whenthey get adopted saves lives and money, improves the lives of the animals in our care and even reduces staff stress. We carefully investigated what it would take to expand the surgery and exam room. Due to the nature of the surroundingstructure, the cost was far more than we were comfortable investing. Brainstorming sessions with the Board led us to thedecision to use our pre-existing training building which would require minimal renovations to fulfill our needs. While we would prefer to do both, suspending our training program and focusing those resources on our animals’ health andwell-being is the right thing to do. We take some comfort in knowing people can get reliable training in the community andwe can always revisit the dog training program some time in the future. We work really hard to provide the absolute bestprograms with the money we have been entrusted with and we believe that for the TCHS mission and strategic plan, this is themost important direction to take right now. With your continued support, we can make it happen.Vicki Davis, CAWAExecutive DirectorFROM THE COUCHDear Confused,Dear WIBS,I noticed that you used to be a lot fluffier. What happened?ConfusedI have known for years that my lovely coat of fur is worth a fortune, and individuals at alaboratory have finally discovered its worth as well. They are offering to pay my humanesociety money for feline fur. They use it for coming up with treatments to help people withallergies. How cool is that? That means more people may be able to reap the benefits ofsharing their home with a feline friend in the future! So step up like I did, and save that cat hair from being brushed or shaved and bring it tothe humane society. It’s the least we can do for those less fortunate than us!Hair needs to be clean (but not washed) and from a healthy cat. There are always peskydetails, so call the shelter to get the whole scoop.WIBS (Wish I’d Been Spayed)Use www.goodsearch.com for your internet search engine, and chooseTri-County Humane Society St. Cloud, MN as your charity. We receivea penny per search, and all those pennies add up!6A kitten is, in the animal world, what a rosebud is in the garden.-- Robert Southey
