The first of nine Pony Club NSW State Championships for theyear was held at the Exhibion Centre, Wagga Wagga fromthe 19‐20 th January 2013.Competors arriving on the Friday were met with extremelyhot weather. Thankfully condions cooled down when asoutherly blew through Friday night, making for more manageableweather over the weekend.HOPE BEATS THE HEATThe Pony Club NSW State Dressage Championships was hostedby Zone 12 and aracted 120 competors from all overNSW and QLD. Compeon was close with riders compengacross two separate Dressage tests with the overall championbeing determined by their collecve placing’s.Top scores occurred across all age divisions. In the under 13age group Jessica McDonald was the age champion for thesecond year in a row riding horse Deltry Belucci from WallsendPony Club. Brianna Cartwright from Mangrove MountainPony Club riding horse Baringa First Class was the 13 and Under15 age champion. Bathurst Pony Club rider, Sarah Farrawayon Rum ‘N’ Coke took out first place in the 13 and under15 age group. While in the 17 and under 25 age group, GeorgiaHope from Canberra Riding Pony Club, placed first on herhorse Kalgan Esprit.The Champion Zone with the highest scores overall was Zone16. Champion Zone 27 riders took out the Fitness Check prize.While NSW was the Champion State with winning riders SarahFarraway, Georgia Hope, Brianna Cartwright and JessicaMcDonald.Georgia Hope 17 and Under 25 Age Champion was extremelyhappy with her performance at the event. “I have competedat state dressage every year since I was 12 years old and thisis the first me I have won age champion at state dressageand placed first in both the dressage tests. Last year I placed2nd overall with a 1st and a 3rd place. I am so happy that myhorse put it all together for me in such hot weather, she istruly amazing. It was also great to be in the winning zoneteam with my friends from zone 16 and in the NSW stateteam”.With a busy year ahead, Miss Hope will be “compeng atsome local AG Shows and then I have Canberra Royal Showand the Sydney Royal Show”.Thinking of the future Miss Hope aims “to connue to enjoymy riding and succeed as much as I can”. We wish Georgiaevery success.For Brianna Cartwright 13 and under 15 years age championthis was a very special win, “I couldn’t have been happier.Buddy has had an amazing year at Pony Club and in the Ponydressage and I will now be focusing on moving Buddy up toElementary.”“My future goals are to connue enjoying schooling andcompeng my ponies and advancing them both up the levels,”said Miss Cartwright.The next State Championship is the State Sporng andCampdraing Championships. 2013 Pony Club NSW State CampThe 20 th annual Pony Club NSW State Camp was held from the 6 to the 11 January 2013, at the Sydney Internaonal EquestrianCentre at Horsley Park.The camp is held every year in January bringing together sixty of the top riders in the state for the week long camp of instruconfrom top Australian coaches.This year’s coaches included Sam Lyle as the Evenng Coach, Jamie Coman from Victoria as the Showjumping Coach, Carolyn Earlalso from Victoria as the Dressage Coach, and Dave Harris and Phil Logue coaching the Mounted Games.Each day the riders sck to a program that is designed not only to ensure the riders develop their skills in their chosen disciplinebut also to ensure they grow on an individual basis. The camp is not just about instrucon, emphasis is also placed on developingteam work and importance is placed on horse care. Each day the riders must feed their horses and ensure the horse’s stables arewell maintained. The social aspect of the camp is also encouraged with aer dinner acvies such as the annual volleyball tournamentbetween the groups of five, which is always an enjoyable part of the rider’s camp experience.The Pony Club NSW Camp is supported by Sport and Recreaon a division of Communies NSW, Product sponsors Mitaviteofficial feed partner and Internaonal Animal Health. It was a very goodday even though we only ended up with 37 riders as many pulled out because of the heat and other commitments. Parkes Pony Club heldtheir end of year day at the Pony Club grounds with aRibbon Day. The children mounted early to beat theheat and played lots of games on horse back with themug of water race being lots of fun on a hot day. Aerthey dismounted and watered their horses, the childrenhad a game of "apple in the bucket' which led tothe best water fight seen on the grounds, with everyonegeng nice and cool, and was brought to a closewhen our Club Patron Mr John McGill almost got verywet.Being the 60th Anniversary of the Club it was great tohave Mrs Kay McGrath and Mr John McGill at the celebraonsas they have members since they were smallchildren. John gave a informave speech telling thechildren of today how the club began, how Mr JoeJudd was such a driving force with the teams of greyponies and how the toured the district with their displayriding.This year the Club is sll producing great riders underthe instrucon of Mrs Heather Wythes and Mrs SharonRoss. To have three riders of the standard to go toState Pony Club events. Aer that,good horsemanship skills are essenal and also the abilityto talk with people is extremely important ‐ the horsedoes not pay the vet bill ‐ the owner does!What has been the highlight of your career so far?The highlight of my career has been coming to Australia!!I am from Colorado in the US where I worked at ColoradoState University in the Reproducon Secon. In one day I can ultrasound mares, gengthem ready to breed, suture a laceraon, take x‐rays and workup a lameness and treat a colic!What advice do you have for young Pony Club membershoping to follow in your footsteps?Any young person who wants to be a vet should studyhard ‐ vet schools are difficult to enter and the compe‐on is tough. In addion, try to shadow your vet at homeand observe everything that he or she does. This will giveyou a good idea of whether or not you are willing to worklong hours, oen for lile pay and somemes be trod onor kicked all for the love of horses!! We always need moregood vets in the equine field so good luck to anyone whowants to follow this career path. This informaon has been wrien by one of theAssociaons State Coaches, as a guide to Pony ClubInstructors. If you are interested in obtaining moreresources, one of the Associaons State Coaches SarahVenamore has published some resource books featuringaddional lesson plans which can be purchased throughthe State Office for $40; ‘The Right Track’ and ‘The RightTrack II’. Simply download a copy of the MerchandiseOrder Form from the website under the Club & ZoneManagement tab.RUNNING A SHOWJUMPING EVENT:There are a number of issues that need to be consideredbefore and during a Showjumping compeon. Beloware the issues that are very important in conducng a safeand enjoyable compeon for horse, riders and officials.The Compeon Arena:Size: The recommended minimum size of a Showjumpingarena for compeon is 50m x 80m and larger whenpossible. An outdoor compeon arena must have aminimum size of 4,000 sq m with a minimum width onthe short side of 50m.Surface: The surface should have give, not hard or slippery.Grass arenas should have a thick coverage of grasswith ideally a sandy loam base underneath. Clover, ryeand onion grass can be very slippery and grasses thatgrow in clumps are also not suitable as horses tend totrip. If wet you may have to make allowances with thecourse, making sure there are nice open easy corners,the height of the fences to be kept at a sensible height forthe condions.Sand and sand mix surfaces should be no less than 10cmor 4” deep and have a good solid base underneath. Theyare not ideal if they are too deep as this makes it hard forthe horse to travel properly and hard to jump out of. Flatand even surfaces are best but it is not illegal to have aslope on the arena.Arena Boundary: The compeon arena must be enclosed.The boundary fence can be a solid fence, bunngor plasc chain.Coaches Cornerjumping phase of One day events. Cups should allow therails to be loose and free to fall down when the horse hitsthem. Cups not being used should be taken off the wingsor put away from the inside of the jump. No equipmentshould be le lying in the compeon or pracce arena.Rails: The recommended weight of rails is between 13 ‐18kgs, length 3.6m and diameter of 100mm. If short railsare to be used on a style fence they should have a minimumlength of 2.4m.Pracce Arena:There should be a limit on the number of horses allowedinto the final jumping pracce arena. Depending on thesize a maximum of 6 horses to a minimum of three horsesif the area is very small.The minimum size of a pracce arena 30m x 50m. Thereneeds to be a Vercal (straight) and an Oxer (spread) supplied.2 wings and 2 rails for a vercal and 2 wings and 3rails for an oxer. The back rail of the spread obstacle musthave approved safety cups.It is correct equee to have someone on the groundwith each rider in the pracce area to pick up rails andalter the fence to suit the stage of warm up the horse andrider requires. Always check with the organisers to seewho the person is that is allowed into the pracce area;i.e. Team manager etc.The jumps should be flagged or have red or white jumpingwings to indicate in which direcon the jumps need tobe jumped. On the approach to the jump red should beon the rider’s right hand side.Officials:The responsibilies of the following are listed below;Course Designer: To design the course suitable for thelevel required. The Course designer should have at leasttwo assistants to set up the course and have to help duringthe compeon. The course designer needs to post acourse plan with the course, me allowed and jump off ifrequired. This should be posted near to the gate of thepracce arena for the riders to see before walking thecourse and the judge should also have a copy.Equipment:Cups: Pony Club approved safety cups/break away cupsmust be used on the back rail of spread obstacles and themiddle rail/s of triple bar obstacles fences for heights90cm and above. Cups should be no deeper than 25mm,but 20mm cups are recommended for normal jumpingcompeons whilst 25mm are recommended for theJudge: The judge is in charge of the compeon and inconsultaon with the organising commiee/club. Thejudge should have a pencillor to record the penales andresults. A mekeeper is of help but mekeeping can bedone by the judge if a mekeeper is not available. Thejudge is in control of the bell. The judge needs to inspectthe course before it is jumped to ensure it is safe and19

Coaches Cornerto discuss with the course designer if there are any ques‐ons on the judgability of the course. The judge is theonly one who can eliminate anyone from the compeon.Marshal: The pracce area is organised and controlled bythe marshal and the draw should be followed unlessthere is good reason for someone to not be in draworder.For the jump off the riders must go in the draw orderfrom the first round unless it is a seeded draw. If theymissed their turn in the first round and they make thejump off they must then go back into their original spot inthe draw for the jump off.The marshal needs to check which riders are in the prac‐ce area and call them in their draw order. Eg. One llJulie two ll Brian three ll Ben four ll Kate etc. It is alsothe marshals responsibility to make sure the number ofhorses in the pracce area does not exceed the recommendednumber.Ring Crew: The ring crew are there to help build thecourse and maintain it throughout the compeon. Theycan stand or sit quietly out on the course making surethey are not in the way of any jumps and are able tomove quietly around the course rebuilding jumps whilethe compeon is in progress.Draws: Draws need to be posted at the pracce area andat the clubhouse or compeon office. I’ve spoiled thisone.’I took his sheet, all soiled andbloed, and gave him a new one ‐all unspoed.And into his red heart I smiled,‘Do beer now, my child.’I came to the throne with atrembling heart; the day wasdone.‘Have you a new day for me, dearFather? I don’t think God couldhave made forgiveness anysimpler.I love the inspiraon of anuntouched, ‘unstuffed’ year. Ialways long to make both myselfand this New Year beer. But evenmore so, I love the promise that Idon’t have to wait for a new yearto get a clean slate, I can have oneevery day, every minute, everybreath.
