Seventh witness in Asaram rape case
shot at in UP, seriously injured
A witness in a rape case against
self-styled godman Asaram
Bapu was shot at and seriously
injured by unidentified assailants
in Shajanpur district,
police said on Saturday.
Kripal Singh, who is 35-yearsold,
was shot at by two unidentified
motorcycle-borne
persons in the Puwayan area
while he was on his way home
on Friday night, police said.
Singh, who sustained severe
bullet injuries was rushed to
Bareilly where his condition was
stated to be critical.
The Indian Express has quoted
a police officer saying that a
bullet hit Singh in the spine and
is lodged there.
In a statement given to Additional
City Magistrate, Singh
had alleged that people connected
to Asaram Bapu had
been threatening him over the
last few days.
Police said that Singh was an
employee of a transport company,
whose owner's daughter
had lodged a case against the
self-styled godman. The godman
is accused of sexually assaulting
a 16-year old girl.
Singh is said to have been
working as an LIC agent and
has a six-year old son.
In January this year, another
witness who had served as a
cook at Asaram's ashram, Akhil
Gupta was shot dead in Muzaffarnagar.
Gupta, who was said
to be the prime witness in the
rape case against Asaram Bapu.
Before he was shot, Gupta had
given a statement in a court in
Gandhinagar and given incriminating
evidence against
Asaram.
Also, in March 2014, two motorcycle-borne
men threw acid
on Dinesh Bhagchandani, a key
witness against Asaram.
The attack on Singh is the seventh
such attack on a witness
One person was killed Saturday
in a powerful explosion that
partly damaged the Italian consulate
in central Cairo, health
ministry spokesman Hossam
Abdel Ghaffar said.
His statement came after a
medic told an AFP journalist at
the scene of the blast that it
had wounded two policemen
and three passers-by, but
Abdel Ghaffar was unable to
specify if the dead person was
a member of the security forces
or the public.
Egypt's official Mena news
agency said that early indications
were that the explosion
One dead in blast at Italian consulate in Cairo
was caused by a bomb that had
been planted in a car parked
near the consulate.
Hundreds of soldiers and policemen
have been killed in militant
attacks in Egypt since the
army deposed Islamist president
Mohamed Morsi in July
2013.
Over the same period, at least
1,400 people, mostly Islamists,
have been killed in a security
crackdown on protests.
The deadliest attacks against
the security forces have occurred
in the Sinai Peninsula,
most of them claimed by the Islamic
State jihadist group.
But Cairo and cities and towns
in the Nile Delta have also been
targeted in such attacks, which
have left hundreds of soldiers
and police dead.
A Man Just Got Arrested For Tweeting Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis' Family Photograph
Mumbai police has arrested a
person for allegedly defaming
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra
Fadnavis recently, by
tweeting his family photograph.
The accused, who has been
identified as Ajay Hatekar, was
arrested by the suburban Oshiwara
police, senior police inspector
of the Oshiwara police
station, Subhash Khanvilkar
told PTI.
Hatekar had allegedly posted a
photograph of the Maharashtra
Chief Minister's family enjoying
a vacation in Goa, in 2011-
2012, on Twitter, and suggested
that it is a photograph
of the Chief Minister's family
holidaying in the USA at present,
the police officer said.
Hatewar is the vice president of
the social media cell of city
Congress, reports Times of
India.
Later, a police complaint was
lodged by Sanjay Pandey, a BJP
worker, alleging that Twitter
had tried to malign the Maharashtra
Chief Minister, the officer
said.
Pandey, who resides in
Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri
(West), said that he had lodged
the complaint after receiving a
WhatsApp message from a
friend, Raju Yadav, who had
provided him the hyperlink of
the tweet, Khanvilkar said.
The police officer said that the
tweeted photograph was of the
Maharashtra CM with his family
on a yacht in Goa, which was
clicked in the year 2011-2012.
After posting this photo on
Twitter, Hatewar allegedly
tweeted that the Maharashtra
CM was enjoying a holiday in
the USA, where he had gone to
seek foreign direct investment,
the officer said.
Meanwhile, the accused has
been booked under relevant
sections of the Indian Penal
Code and the Infotech Act, the
police officer added.
The tweet may have led to the
registration of an offence
against him in Mumbai, but it
has also catapulted Hatewar to
instant fame, giving his political
career leverage like never before.
But Hatewar isn't upset about
getting arrested, he is in fact
quite amused that his tweet has
gone viral. "It was just a 'copyand-post'
act from my side. I
had even changed the name of
the chief minister and only
posted a remark regarding a
picture of the family, which was
already gone viral among lakhs
of users," he told Times Of
India.
The tweet that got him arrested
also gave his political career
leverage like never before
11/7 Mumbai Local train blasts: 9 years on, WR still has no baggage scanners
Passengers on Mumbai’s local
trains remain sitting ducks nine
years after the train blasts of
July 11, 2006, as the railways are
still struggling to secure several
entry and exit points at various
stations. Shockingly, even
today, the Western Railway
does not have gadgets such as
baggage scanners to secure its
stations.
While railway police officials
claim that a project to secure
unauthorised access points is
under way, railway activists are
furious at the authorities’ lackadaisical
approach to security,
saying it jeopardises the lives of
its approximately 80 lakh daily
users.
In 2006, bombs exploded in
seven local trains between
Mahim and Bhayandar stations,
killing over 189 people and injuring
829 others. Following the
blasts, the railways envisaged a
plan to secure the 136 railway
stations and their 469 platforms.
As a part of the plan, railway authorities
installed high-end
CCTV cameras at important stations
under the Integrated Security
System (ISS) program.
Baggage scanners were also installed
at these stations, which
also cater to long-distance
trains. However, almost a
decade after the blasts, not a
single station on the Western
Railway has a baggage scanner.
Anand Jha, senior divisional security
commissioner, Railway
Protection Force (Western Railway),
said, “The process of acquiring
baggage scanners has
been delayed for several reasons,
including paucity of funds
and the failure of suppliers to
adhere to specifications of the
Research Design and Standards
Organisation (RDSO). However,
tenders to acquire four scanners
have now been floated and we
should get them in the coming
quarter.”
But even if these scanners are
installed soon, the railway’s
security plan will continue to
have glaring holes until several
unauthorised entry and exit
points at various stations –
which allow passengers to bypass
security – are plugged.
Another serious issue is a severe
staff crunch in the two wings of
the railway police – the Government
Railway Police (GRP) and
the Railway Protection Force
(RPF). Because of this, many stations
remain insecure and vulnerable
to an attack.
Railway activist Samir Zaveri
criticised railway authorities for
not waking up despite the 2006
train blasts and the 26/11 terror
attack, in which several commuters
died at Chhatrapati
Shivaji Terminus (CST).
WhatsApp to be Banned in UK
Within Few Weeks
World's most popular messaging
service WhatsApp might be
soon banned in Britain.
Prime Minister David Cameron
is expected to pass a new legislation
which plans ‘to stop
people from sending any form
of encrypted messages’.
This decision comes after the
recent terrorist attacks in the
country and a shootout in
Tunisia in which 27 Britons
were killed.
Besides WhatsApp, other messaging
services like iMessage
and Snapchat are also facing
ban as they currently scramble
communications between their
users.
"In our country, do we want to
allow a means of communication
between people which we
cannot read? My answer to that
question is: ‘No, we must
not", Cameron said earlier this
year.
“We have always been able,
on the authority of the home
secretary, to sign a warrant and
intercept a phone call, a mobile
phone call or other media communications.”
He said.
However, many people have
objected the decision and
termed it as a breach of privacy.
In a recent report from the
Electronic Frontier Foundation,
called ‘Who Has Your Back?’
Whatsapp got the worst ranking
and has been criticised at
each level of measurement.
80% of the marriages are broken
down as it was built on
physical attraction and physical
intimacy and not TRUST FAC-
TOR.
Most relations now in this generation,
have a relationship of
knowing each other for 5 to 6
years of going around dating
but in real life when married are
faced with truth and reality of
married life, the compatibility is
not there and there is no
gelling and bonding.
Every marriage counseling I
have had an encounter with my
day to day life, some met on
matrimonial sites, some on dating
sites & social networking
sites, some knew each other
since college days, some knew
each other in office, but when
they got married, that's when
the trouble began.
To begin with I would like to
emphasize, the most important
thing where a gelling & bonding
takes place is when every
spouse gives each other freedom
of space. Nagging is the
root cause of broken marriages,
as no freedom and too many
doubts, asking for location of
the spouse, with modern
means of communication like
WhatsApp, yahoo messenger,
Skype one can reach out to the
people all over the world, it has
no boundaries. This is misused
too much as familiarity breeds
contempt.
So what brings marital harmony
and what's the responsibility of
each spouse and their children.
The answer is simple. First and
foremost in every marriage
there should be faithfulness,
most men visit networking sites
and chat with women of a bad
reputation all because of sex,
and spends money on women,
there are so many sites on
Google to surf & meet women
online, exchange mobile numbers
and meet each other, but
that goes for 1 or 2 times and
then they start to look for more
variety, as for most men variety
is the spice of life.
For a stable marriage the one
most important thing is to be
frank with each other and have
respect and dignity for each
other and most important give
each other his/her space freedom
and most of all time.
Doubt is the main cause of the
crack in a marriage. You can
clear doubts by asking each
other directly the matter that
troubles them, a strong bond
can be formed with each other
and discuss their problems with
each other, without any conditions.
There are some things
which cannot be tolerated, I
think spouses should learn to
compromise even if it’s a sacrifice,
and you can compromise
only if you love that person.
A wife plays an important role
and does a lot of sacrifices, but
husbands think he is providing
money so why bother and he
looks for greener pastures and
chemistry between them is
gone. Another factor wives at
home rattle out all the grievances
when the husband comes
home from work. In fact, times
have not changed but we have
changes our mindset of thinking
that we are modern and we
are imitating the west.
Another factor among wives,
they like to compare that the
other friend has beautiful sari
/dress or gold ornaments or
better luxury lifestyle, they want
foreign trips for holidays like
Bangkok, Pattaya, Singapore,
etc. but each wife should realise
how much pay package husband
brings home and then
only have luxury trips.
What can be done to bring
marital bliss, the couple should
understand their responsibilities.
For a husband, his wife
should be his first priority and
his parents should be treated
with love, respect and dignity
as when you marry the guy, you
marry his family too. Next important
thing is PRAY. We often
forget to pray as a family.
Prayers do not change GOD but
change the one who prays.
Prayers can make miracles so
praying together daily is very
important.
Remember children are the victims
of all fights between husband
and wife. They become
insecure, They are disturbed
with the fights, parents many a
times compensate their children
by giving them latest
gadgets, but that's not the end.
If the child sees parents happy
loving, their mental frame is
stabilised but if they see parents
fighting amongst themselves.
They are psychologically
affected in every way, mentally,
physically, and academically
too. Children are the leaders of
tomorrow, what we make of
them and mould them they get
moulded like clay, but if the
child is brought up in an atmosphere
of fights, disharmony
among parents, they grow up
as unstable children and get
drifted away.
So marital harmony and responsibilities
towards children
and spouse go hand in hand in
making a better future and
world a better place to live in.
The Sad state of India's Olympic preparations
An athlete puts his heart and
soul into his effort once he feels
valued. India, in that sense, is a
lucky country. There are not
many medals to show, not
much support for every athlete.
But the intent and the endeavour
is never lacking. Still, if our
athletes don't win much, it's
not entirely because they aren't
skilled. What it is then? You will
know by the time you finish
reading this piece.
The aim of this story is not to
pass judgements, but provide
the athletes a forum to speak,
to let India know why we fall at
the final hurdle at the biggest
stage of all. Why a gold medal
is still elusive? Why we always
have to stay contend with a
handful of silver and bronze?
Any win, any feat, even qualification
for a big event is a moment
of pride to every Indian.
None of the Indians, except the
one who is the source of that
pride, knows the inside story.
Rather, the athlete who has
gone through things his fans
can't even imagine is burdened
to do more, to go that extra
mile - the ultimate glory being
an Olympic medal.
Meet Lalita Babar, India's latest
Olympic qualifier in the 3000m
Steeplechase event. The 26-
year-old long-distance runner,
for whom drought is a more
common sight than water in
the Mohi village of Maharashtra,
has broken barriers and
shifted disciplines to find herself
in Ooty training for the
World Championships followed
by her big day at the Rio
Games.
The problem is Lalita has to buy
running spikes on her own. The
government doesn't pay for it.
And it costs over Rs. 10,000 per
pair.
"The government doesn't provide
us with shoes, we have to
buy on our own. One pair costs
over Rs 10,000 and lasts just
one month. They don't give us
equipment during training or
competition. We have to buy
shoes, which is our only equipment,
on our own," she said.
And the Steeplechase specific
spikes are not available in
India."In India, we don't get
special shoes for Steeplechase.
We have to order from abroad.
One spike lasts only one
month. We order 5-6 pairs (Rs
50,000-60,000) at one time because
we can't take a chance.
We have to alternate between
pairs. In a week, we alternate
between three pairs so that
they last long," Lalita explained.
The help finally came but not
from the government.
"Anglian Medal Hunt has come
to my help. Since last month
(June), they are paying for my
shoes by depositing Rs. 30,000
in my bank account," said the
three-time winner of Mumbai
Marathon, Asian Games bronze
medallist and recently the winner
of gold at the 2015 Asian
Championships.
"Our government should bear
it [cost of the shoes]. I have
qualified for world championships
and Olympics. So they
should bear the cost. The government
can at least do this
much for us," the champion
athlete said as her voice
choked.
If Lalita's story is an eye opener,
brace yourself up to hear the
apathy of Soumyajit Ghosh, the
promising 22-year-old Table
Tennis player from Siliguri.
Soumyajit trains in Sweden for
6-8 months to chase his India
and Olympic dreams. While
that sounds exciting, you will
drop your jaw hearing what the
young paddler has to say.
"I train in Falkenberg, Sweden,
for 6-8 months. I am here [in
Siliguri] for a break. There I
have a personal coach who
charges Rs. 1 lakh per month.
The federation just gives us the
permission; they don't reimburse
this amount. My parents
and I have to manage these
payments. My dad is employed
in a job and mom is a housewife,"
Soumyajit revealed.
What eases some of his burden
is his job with Bharat Petroleum
and playing for a local league in
Falkenberg, but still it's not
enough to pay the coaching
fee.
"I play club league during my
stay in Sweden and the club
takes care of my food and
lodging. There is also some
help from my employer. They
pay for a couple of my foreign
trips a year and provide ticket
for training at overseas venues."But
I would like my government
to support my training
and provide me a personal
coach all the time since the national
coach is available only if
there is a training camp or a
tournament India is playing,"
he said.
And quite understandably,
Soumyajit feels weighed down.
"This is a weight on me, it's a lot
of problem. There is no support
from the government because
TT is not on priority list," he
said before hanging up.
Our quest to find a happy athlete
among the not-so-popular
sports in India took us to the
pool, where we contacted
Sandeep Sejwal, the 2014 Asian
Games bronze medallist swimmer.
Sandeep is the closest of Indian
swimmers to Olympics berth,
just 1.5 seconds away from an
A qualification and ticket to Rio.
And he hopes to achieve that at
the coming World Championships.
But there is one lingering
grudge: no help from the
authorities.Awarding performance
comes easy, because you
don't have to identify who to
award. The difficult part is raising
champions, nurturing them,
harnessing their talent. For that,
the first pre-requisite is building
a relationship. It matters in
sports. Make your athletes feel
valued. Provide them with the
best and in return get the best.
India needs a committed sports
administration, a government
that's serious towards contributing
in an athlete's development,
in helping him better
his skills and put the country on
the podium.
Once that mutual belief is in
place, results will follow. Until
then, we will continue to come
across such stories of discontent.
Still, all the best for Rio, India!
