I wasjust surprised by how well it went. After thecamp we sat down with (the Foundation) andthey liked what they saw and we went throughit and they kind of made it a pilot program forthe rest of them.”Despite Rimsnider’s apprehension going intoit, what he -- and the golfers -- got out of it wasnot only a new experience, but one that provedlife and career changing for the professional, while laying the groundwork for all of theFoundation camps to come.Thirteen years later, Rimsnider said Cog Hill has12 athletes for its camp now, and may add asecond one in the fall. Now he is the one teaching the teachers, holding coaching sessions for golf coachesinvolved in the Special Olympic program andthe Foundation. As the game and its players have changed overtime, the athletes he works with year in andyear out offer a look back into the soul of thegame, the part that really only matters -- thegolf.“Just to be on a golf course, hitting a ball, pulling a cart, I think it’s pretty cool,” Rimsnidersaid. “The other thing with many of the athletesis their parents play, so it’s ‘Wow, I’m doingsomething that Dad does.’ It’s something theycan watch on TV, but it’s also something they’redoing.”Rimsnider gives a lot of credit to his employers, the Jemsek family, for not only allowing himthe freedom to be so involved in the SunshineThrough Golf Foundation, but for theirSixth Annual White SoxFundraiserWednesday, Sept. 12 at 7:10 p.m.U.S. Cellular Field, ChicagoChicago White Sox vs. Detroit TigersEvery year, friends of the Foundation provide special needsathletes and their families with the opportunity to attenda White Sox game. It was a total win-win. It’s just special.”That admiration is a two-way street however,as the Jemsek family couldn’t be more proudto have Rimsinder as a leader along the way inFoundation activities.“How could there not be pride in somethinghe started taking one camp to 90?” KatherineJemsek said. “Jeff’s personality helps him a lot, especially teaching those with special needs. He has the ability to break down what he’sseeing in very basic terms so anybody canunderstand.”Rimsnider practices chipping with an athleteOver two decades later, you would thinkRimsnider could now, finally, say he’s seen it all.But for him, his work with the Sunshine ThroughGolf Foundation and its athletes creates anew memory every time out. It’ll always keephim fresh, and looking for something new, especially as the Foundation and its effortsgrow statewide.“It’s awful cool that it started with us and it’sgrown like it has,” he said. “I never thought. Itsbeen something else. It’s just all pretty cool.”6Sunshine Through Golf camps partner with SpecialRecreation Associations (SRAs), private agencies andpark districts to provide professional golf instruction toindividuals with special needs. As aprofessional, he played on it, and taught thegame to juniors, single-digit handicappersand your average hacker. Through hisaffiliation with Cog Hill, he’s seen the bestamateur and professional players in theworld come through nearly every summer.Yet back in 1999, he was presented a uniquechallenge -- to lead the first SunshineThrough Golf Foundation camp.It was a small group, maybe seven or eightathletes, but Rimsnider had never workedwith players with special needs. In an effort to continually share the game ofgolf and its Midwest Golf House facilities withthe special needs population, the SunshineThrough Golf Foundation partners withthe Illinois Coalition for Adapted PhysicalEducation. Using the Coalition to marketthe program, the Foundation providesadaptive physical education teachers withthe opportunity to reserve the Three-HoleSunshine Course, free-of-charge.Michelle Schaffer, an adaptive PE teacherat District 200 schools in Wheaton, broughther class to the Sunshine Course last springfor the first time after hearing about theopportunity through ICAPE. “The kids gotout there and laughed and had a greattime. They loved it and want to come back,”Schaffer said.“I ran it like a junior golf program, keepingit really simple and not knowing what toexpect,” he said. “But when it was all said anddone I was like ‘that was really cool.’ Peopleloved it. It just was a neat experience. It’sreally just keeping things simple and safeand keeping it fun.”He turned to his wife, Shawnae for guidance. An educator by trade, she taughtspecial education classes. She helpedteach the teacher in advance of his firstFoundation camp.Continued on page 5Vol. 9, No. 1, May 2012Recognition, Inspiration and News from the Sunshine Through Golf FoundationRimsnider stands with campers on the Sunshine CourseDistrict 200 students visit the Sunshine CourseTo prepare for their day at the SunshineCourse, Schaffer’s students used toy hoopsand whiffle balls to sharpen their skills. Dryer added, “They lovethe opportunity to take a field trip, and theyreally feel like rock stars when they come.”To learn more about the adaptive PEprogram, please contact Alex Nolly atanolly@cdga.org or (630) 257-2005.Sunshine Through Golf Foundation ∙ 11855 Archer Ave. Lemont, IL 60439 ∙ www.sunshinethroughgolf.org ∙ (630) 257-20051
