Chairman’s Report - Season 2010
Last year was business as usual after the excitement and success of the previous year in the
NPower National Village Cricket Competition. There were good performances and highlights
throughout but without any outstanding club achievement.
Before launching into a summary of our playing performances it is appropriate to reflect on
the sad passing away in June of Paul Jenkins at an early age; an ex-player and very popular
member of the club. It was great to see his mother June continuing to join us at a number of
games.
Under the Captaincy of Huw Jones the First XI had a successful season in the Second
Division of the new Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Cricket League; this League being
formed following the amalgamation of the South East and South West Leagues to produce
one Pan-South Wales Premiership. We finished fourth and highlights were:
• Ben Edwards, 120 against Brecon, and Justin Thomas, 110 against Hoover, getting their first
league centuries for us.
• John Francis, 120 against Brecon and Garan Treharne, 104 against Hopkinstown in the Cup.
• Daniel Hay’s excellent 76 to help an under strength Miskin beat a strong Radyr side.
• Steve Doble and Kevin Thomas hitting winning runs against Creigiau and Newport
Fugitives respectively.
• Jonathan Edwards taking 6 for 44 against Creigiau.
• Chris Owen taking the most wickets, 20, and a number of exceptional catches.
• Huw Jones and Jonathan Edwards being just behind Chris with 19 wickets apiece.
The Second XI had a very exciting season in their corresponding league. Under the Captaincy
of Craig Pritchard, Rob Smyth, but mainly Matthew Ayres. They were near the top of the
division throughout the season and it was not until the last match that they narrowly missed
out on promotion. Highlights included:
• Carl Whiteley 122 against Ponthir and Craig Pritchard 108 against Hoovers.
• Kevin Thomas topping the batting with the most runs 310 and at an average of 31.
• Abdullah Malik 7 for 7 against Brecon and Mike Cockell 7 for 17 against Newport Fugitives.
• Matthew Jones and Rob Smyth taking the most wickets, 17 and Dan Burr, in his first full
season for the team being just behind with a tally of 16.
The Third XI under the Captaincy of Paul Elkes had a vastly improved season finishing near
the middle of their table. Their bowling was strong with a number of good performances but
getting runs proved to be more difficult. Highlights were:
• Gethin Bale 110 against Tondu III.
• Gareth Bale 76 and Glen Newbury 71 for a last ball victory chasing a formidable 246 set by Porth.
• Owain Skelton again winning the bowling cup, this time with 4 for 11 against Tondu III.
It was a successful season for the Sunday Team under the captaincy of Steve Doble ;
winning 7 of its 13 matches . There was plenty of runs and a number of batsmen had high
scores Chris Owen 66,72, 78 , Gareth Bale 73 ,Carl Whitley 71 and Jack Harris 84 . However
wickets were more difficult to get and the best bowling was Owain Skelton with 5 for 40 ;
and Keiron Lawrence ,in his first season with the team , took a superb 3 for 17 .
The Junior Section continued to thrive under the direction of Keith Davies . This is a large and
very important part of the Club ; and it is appropriate that its progress is reported in detail
elsewhere.
As usual there was always plenty to do to keep the Club going. The Committee were again
exceptional and in particular Gordon Waugh , the Treasurer; Nick Ashby the Secretary and
Rob Smyth the Vice Chairman; Peter Hybart had left the committee because of a potential
conflict of interest with his new appointment as Director of Cricket, Wales.

Chairman’s Report Continued - Season 2010
Our playing facilities were again of the highest standard. This was made possible by the
continuing exceptional work of John Painter, to the outfield and the driveway; both during
the winter preparation and throughout the Playing Season; and to the good work of Cy
Rosser. and Gabe Treharne for the upkeep of the square. To make the picture complete
Gordon Waugh nurtured the flowers and strimmed the banks .
Donna Holder organised the tea ladies, and their helpers, to again produce the best teas
in the league; and Cy and Tom Rosser who were always present on match day mornings
making sure that the club house was clean and the bar well stocked.
Fund raising had another successful year. The Monday Night Committee produced their usual
and much relied upon income from the tote; Lynn Thomas collected the subs, produced the
brochure and collected sponsorship .Again ,by far the biggest fund raising event was the
Golf Day organised by Keith Davies at the Vale of Glamorgan. Our particular thanks go to
Steven Leeke for his continued generosity in giving us the use of the course and to the other
firms and friends who supported the event.
Our Presentation Dinner at the Pontyclun Athletic Club was again a success.
The cup winners were:
Eddie Beynon Batting Cup
In coming to a close, I would like to thank all who helped run the club through this season,
and to our friends and sponsors who provided us with financial support and thereby enabled
us to keep up the high standard of facilities at Miskin.
Finally, my thank all players and Captains for keeping up Miskin’s reputation , as being
somewhere to play competitive and enjoyable cricket.
Thank you.
Season 2011

Miskin Manor Cricket Club
Secretary’s Report - Season 2010
This season had been a steady one for the Club with solid, if not spectacular,
performances from all the senior teams. Our league positions were ultimately safe
from relegation concerns with the 1st XI finishing 4th, but only the 2nd XI were
realistically challenging for promotion and came close in 3rd place. The main
disappointment this year was our loss to Hopkinstown in the Village Cup which
prevented us from reaching the group final and the chance of a money spinning
cup run. Home advantage told on the day, however, with the short boundaries suiting
their style of batting and making our target of 269 reachable whereas it would
have been safe at most other grounds. They ultimately lost at home to our old foe
of Shipton-Under-Wychwood in the first National Round.
This year has been similar to recent seasons in that availability has been inconsistent
with over 25 players turning out for the 1st XI during the year and this has been
reflected on our somewhat inconsistent performances on the field. The league
captains – Huw, Matthew and Paul – have, as ever, worked tirelessly to ensure we
fielded 33 players on the field each week and I thank them for their continued
hard work. I’d also like to thank Steve Doble for a successful Sunday season too. I
would also like to wish Huw well in his recovery from his recent illness and operation
and hope he is fit to captain the 1st XI come the first game of 2011.
This season has been the first following the setting up of the new South Wales
Premier League and the reshaping and renaming of our league to the Glamorgan
and Monmouthshire Cricket League. In the main, this has not impacted on us significantly
with the league programme proceeding in its normal fashion. The only
point of confusion has been around the promotion and relegation situation and it
was only in mid-October that this was clarified by the League and those affected
knew who was up or down. The key 1st XI movers included St Fagans and Usk
being relegated from the Premier League (which caused a bit of a shock to many!)
with Bridgend being promoted to the Premier League. Rogerstone won our division
and have been promoted to division 1 although Malpas, who were runner’s up,
were prevented from doing so by league ground regulations. Division 1 now consists
of 12 teams for 2011. Vale have been promoted into division 2 for next season
which remains at 10 teams. In the 2nd XI, the promoted and relegated sides were
similar to the 1st XI except Radyr were promoted from division 2 and Lisvane &
Welsh Asians came up from Division 3. Hoovers were relegated from division 2.
I am not sure I am 100% clear on how the moves will work going forward and
these depend on who gets relegated from the premier league and any teams that
are prevented from being promoted due to league regulations, but I will ask the
league to try to clarify the permutations for next season.

While I am talking about league matters, I noticed in the November league minutes
that the League Secretary, John Owen is standing down at the AGM due to ill
health. I know how much effort John puts in to his role and I would like to record
my thanks to him and wish him well. His replacement will have a tough act to follow
as the league secretary’s role keeps getting more complex each year with new
regulations and requirements.
One other interesting point from the November league minutes is the current
proposal for the Cricket Board of Wales and Welsh Cricket Association to be disbanded
and replaced with a new body called ‘Cricket Wales’. This will be formed
of representatives from Glamorgan CC, ex Cricket Board of Wales and the Recreational
Game and chaired by a representative from the recreational game. This new
body is required by the ECB to be in place by 31st January 2011 to ensure ongoing
funding of £800k per annum.
Coming back to the club and due to our good financial shape at the moment, I am
pleased to note the next project being undertaken is the replacement of the scoreboard
with a new electronic facility. This will provide a great improvement on the
current board that is now showing its age and I would like to thank Steve Hopkins
for all the work he has done to research and organise this project.
Finally. I would like to thank the committee and in particular Gabe and Gordon
for all their assistance and hard work during this season, and I look forward to a
successful season next year although, with my new role as father to a 9 month old
baby girl, my involvement on the field may be somewhat less than in the past!
Thank you.
Junior Cricket Season - Season 2010
The Mid. Glamorgan Youth league tables show how each age group fared during
season 2011. It is noticeable that the standard set over several years has somewhat
declined. Nevertheless each team played with the right attitude and showed
considerable improvement from game to game. A big effort will be made in
season 2011 to see further improvement and higher league positions at each age
group.
For the third year we were involved in the ECB Chance to Shine scheme, where
we provided cricket coaching for local schools. This was again a great success
with Llantrisant, Penygawsi and Pontyclun Primary schools very supportive of the
scheme. It is a great shame that the ECB will no longer be funding the Chance to
Shine scheme. We will however, endeavour to provide the same service to local
schools. At secondary level, Y Pant School played regular games at Miskin and on
National Cricket Day organized an inter school cricket tournament which was a
great success.
Eric Griffith Award
At the Under 15 age group we have the award in memory of Eric Griffith the club’s
scorer and life member who passed away 3 years ago. Every year we award this
trophy to the Under 15 player who in his last year, is considered to have made the
greatest contribution to Junior cricket. To qualify the player must have played in
all the age groups. In 2009 the award was shared by two outstanding cricketers
whose contribution since they started in Miskin at a very young age has made
them worthy winners of the award. In 2007 the winner was Matthew Jones, in
2008 it was Tom Robinson and sharing the award in 2009 were Joel Gehler and
Chris Owen. Well done Joel and Chris.
Friday Night Cricket Practice at Miskin for children under 9 years of age.
The big success of the 2010 season was our Friday night cricket sessions when
between 60 and 80 young players would show tremendous enthusiasm in tackling
different cricketing skills. The age range of attendees was from 5 to 9 years
old. With the help of parents and junior players all sessions were an enjoyable
experience and there was considerable cricketing talent to be seen. We now hope
that all these players will be with us next year again when I am sure we will see this
talent blossom enabling so many youngsters to have years of enjoyment playing
cricket.

Miskin Manor Cricket Club
Kayleigh Powell – Leading The Way In Girls Cricket
Kayleigh Powell currently plays for Miskin Manor CC U11’s team.
Having first played cricket in the club’s junior section at the age of 8 whilst
attending Llantrisant Primary School, Kayleigh now attends Y Pant School and has
played representative cricket for Mid Glamorgan in 2010.
A keen sports person, Kayleigh also plays rugby for Llantrisant RFC juniors and
both football & netball for Y Pant School.
During the winter months she has been attending Mid Glamorgan county nets
under the direction of Teresa Stenner and has just completed trials for the Wales
girls’ U13 squad for the 2011 season.
Kayleigh bowls medium pace, bats middle order and is an exceptional fielder.
With the continued growth in girls’ cricket she has a bright future ahead of her –
at club, county and national level.
