Dear Friends:
With your support we are brokering hope for a new generation of young people. In 2010, Wyman improved the lives of more
than 1,200 teens in the St. Louis region through the evidence-based programs they need to navigate the divide between the
world they know and the future they desire. Teens in Wyman programs are graduating from high school on time, going on
to college and giving back to their communities. Our vision over the next five years is to reach thousands more teens in our
region, and in 2010 we took some big steps toward ensuring more teens can be reached with quality programming, more
policy-makers and community members are advocating on their behalf, and that our young people continue to see positive
results as they work toward a successful future.
Some highlights of 2010 include:
• The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) selected Wyman’s Teen Outreach Program (TOP)
to serve up to 250,000 new young people across the nation over the next five years. The TOP program is a nationally
recognized, evidence-based program that has been proven to reduce teenage pregnancy, lower drop out rates and
improve academic performance. In October, HHS announced the recipients of $75 million for organizations replicating
programs, and as much as one-third of the HHS funding was awarded to providers who have agreed to partner with
Wyman to deliver Wyman’s TOP to their constituents.
• We learned that 67% of the first graduating class of Wyman’s Teen Leadership Program (Class of 2006) graduated college
in four and a half years or less and are pursuing meaningful careers or graduate school! In comparison, a 2009 study
by the St. Louis Regional College Access Pipeline Project found that less than 25% of the region’s young adults, age
25 or older, have earned a baccalaureate degree. And only 46.6% of all college students, nationwide, achieve degree
completion in five years (National Center for Education Statistics, 2004).
• With the support of Missouri Department of Higher Education and the TG Public Benefit Grant, we formalized our
college prep programming for young people in Wyman’s Teen Leadership Program. These grant funds allowed us to
continue to prepare teens from disadvantaged circumstances for post-secondary education and a lifetime of success
through progressive college campus experiences, financial aid workshops, college and career days, and more. To
complement the college persistence work, the Cheryl and David Morley Scholarship Endowment is creating a fund so
that a number of Wyman teens can pursue a post-secondary education debt-free.
• Our first Saigh Symposium, presented by The Saigh Foundation, brought together youth practitioners, legislators
and community leaders to hear Joseph Allen, Ph.D., co-author of ‘Escaping the Endless Adolescence,’ discuss how
adolescence has come to last longer and longer, what it is doing to our young people and what we can do about it.
Future speakers in this series will continue to share with others the voice of experts in the field of youth development
research and evidence-based practices.
Even with its fast growing national network of partners, Wyman continues to view direct service to St. Louis teens as its most
important work, and we are continually looking for resources and partnerships to dramatically expand programming for
teens in the St. Louis region. With your commitment of support we can continue this important work. We look forward to a
continued partnership, founded on the shared vision of changing young lives and our communities.
Wyman began 2011 with new leadership as we welcomed John Sandberg as the incoming Chairman of the Board. Mr.
Sandberg is a founding partner of the law firm Sandberg Phoenix, which has offices in St. Louis and in Edwardsville and
Carbondale, IL. He has been recognized by his peers as a top trial lawyer in St. Louis and Missouri. As a supporter of Wyman
teens for more than a decade, he is providing strong and consistent leadership of Wyman’s mission and goals for the future.
Together we are changing generations of young people, one teen at a time.
