2004-2007. President and chair <strong>of</strong> the board <strong>of</strong> <strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> Network, Inc., an<br />

independent nonpr<strong>of</strong>it corporation dedicated to advancing research in world<br />

history through worldwide connections.<br />

2001-2004. Project director, ―<strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> Network,‖ supported by the National<br />

Endowment for the Humanities. With co-director Heidi Roupp, I am developing<br />

a comprehensive gateway for research, teaching, and curriculum in world history<br />

on the Internet (http://www.worldhistorynetwork.org).<br />

1999-2003. "<strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> Databank." A collaborative effort to collect data on issues in<br />

economic, demographic, and social history on a global basis for the past four<br />

centuries. Initial proposals for support were submitted to the National Science<br />

Foundation in 1999 and 2000.<br />

1994-2004. Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> <strong>Center</strong> at Northeastern <strong>University</strong>. This<br />

center supports research, curriculum development, and instructional outreach in<br />

world history. Its Web site (http://www.whc.neu.edu) includes significant<br />

resources in world history, and links to other resources.<br />

1998-2002. Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> Resource <strong>Center</strong>. The Resource <strong>Center</strong><br />

included a unique library <strong>of</strong> world-historical teaching materials. It directed over<br />

thirty multi-day teacher workshops on world history in Massachusetts from 1998<br />

to 2001, and administered fifty multi-day workshops nationally in 2001 and 2002.<br />

1994-2002. Co-editor <strong>of</strong> H-WORLD (with Kenneth Pomeranz and Whitney Howarth),<br />

the H-Net electronic discussion group in world history. Provides daily postings to<br />

over 1500 subscribers, and includes a substantial Web site.<br />

1995-2000. Project director, ―Migration in Modern <strong>World</strong> <strong>History</strong> CD-ROM,‖ supported<br />

by The Annenberg/CPB Project. This instructional CD-ROM, intended for use as<br />

the base <strong>of</strong> a survey course in modern world history, was published in 2000 by<br />

Wadsworth Publishing Co.<br />

1994-97. Member <strong>of</strong> steering committee <strong>of</strong> Globalizing Regional Histories initiative,<br />

sponsored by the American Historical Association. This initiative, headed by<br />

Renate Bridenthal and Sandria Freitag, launched an attempt to link historians<br />

working in various area-studies traditions, and to elicit a wider dialogue on global<br />

themes in history. It resulted in research conferences in 2001 and 2003 at the<br />

Library <strong>of</strong> Congress, and conferences <strong>of</strong> community college faculty at the Library<br />

<strong>of</strong> Congress in 2001-2003.<br />

1994-96. Graduate Coordinator, Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>History</strong>. Primary responsibility for the<br />

graduate program as the Ph.D. program was established.<br />

1989-93. I was active in the Northeastern <strong>History</strong> Department's efforts to establish a<br />

Ph.D. program, with particular interest in the proposed program's innovations in<br />

methodology and world history. The program was approved in 1993, and I<br />

became Graduate Coordinator.<br />
