Comments or feedback canbe sent to: wigwam_wisdom@yahoo.com*(WW is intended entertainment purposes only. Please makesure to seek professional counseling when necessary .)Dear WW: I believe I might have a stalker afterme. I dated a man a while ago and he can’t seem tomove on from it. It’s to the point where I am readyto ask for police protection and file for a RestrainingOrder. It always feels so borderline that I don’tknow if it’s me or if he really is crossing the line. For instance, when I have a date over, he shows upunexpectedly, he sends me cards in the mail, I wentto pick up my dry cleaning and he already paid forit, etc. Last week I actually felt like someone wasin my house but couldn’t prove anything. How do Iknow for sure? Being StalkedDear Being Stalked: Stalking is no laughing matterand is against the law. A court official or an attorneycan tell you for sure. I would recommend that youcheck into it only because YOU are not comfortablewith the situation. Start by documenting his behaviorand anything you have to say to him should also besent by email (keep a copy) or in front of a witness.Do not encourage the behavior by thanking him fordoing things for you. Bluntly tell him that you canpay your own bills and don’t answer your door if hehasn’t been invited over.Dear WW: Holidays are fast approaching and beforewe know it, the invites will start to come in. I recentlymarried and we both come from big families. Myfamily is local but his is about two hours away. Untilnow, we have always spent it with our immediatefamily. I can’t think of not being with my familyover the holidays. My grandmother is not gettingany younger and I never know if this will be herlast holiday. How do I divide my time with my newin-laws and my own. I don’t want to feel like I ambeing selfish for not wanting to travel to be with hisfamily but I don’t! Not GoingDear Not Going: In prior years, you spent time withimmediate family because you were not married.Being married is a partnership and there is no roomfor stubbornness. It is not fair to your husband toforsake holidays with his family in order for you toenjoy them with yours. Perhaps you could split upthe holidays or even host them at your house. As faras your grandmother, you can always call her on theholiday and let her know you are thinking of her. Itdoesn’t take a holiday to be with your family and ifit’s not on the day of, the day before of the day afterwill be just as good.Dear WW: I am an elder in the Tribal community,I see so much change and most of it is for the better. However, what really makes me nervous is the influxof drugs and alcohol on to the reservation. This wasa safe place to roam back in the day but now most ofmy prayers are for the safety of my grandkids and thecommunity. I’ve even heard of people being held forransom in order to get paid their drug money! Howdo we get rid of this threat to our lives? Times HaveChangedDear Changed: Your best defense is educationand awareness. Educate yourself on the behaviorsof drugs and report any suspicious activity to yourlocal police department. You could get involved ina Community Watch program which would be madeup of citizens in your own community. Unfortunately, you will never be able to completely get rid of drugsbut you can empower yourself and your communityby uniting and taking a stand against it. Being a goodrole model and reaching out to help people who needhelp will encourage others to follow.
