Show CampFor 84 years the Brisbane Show Camp has been giving lucky participants fromthroughout Queensland’s urban and rural areas the chance to live, breathe, eatand sleep <strong>Ekka</strong>.Established in 1927 as the Pig Club Camp for Boys, the camp has continually evolvedand this year introduces some brand new experiences and encourages other schoolsand students to get involved.Students with a passion for production will be able to participate in a videoproduction session while a newspaper writing session is offered to those who wouldrather put pen to paper. Show Camp kids will continue to research, interview, writeand edit articles for the <strong>Ekka</strong> Courier, further developing their literacy skills.This year marks the 21st edition of the much loved <strong>Ekka</strong> Courier which reports onevents happening around the show. For the first time, the news will be taken onlineand adds to the existing use of blog posts, video interviews and podcasts.Twenty lucky Grade 6 and 7 school students are chosen after submitting a newsstyle article on the topic of ‘Living Sustainably’, relating to a sustainability initiativeat home, school or something in their local area.Show Camp HQ is located right in the thick of it and the public can see the buddingjournalists in action at a designated work area and video production studio.Students make their way to the show from the far north, way out west and centralQueensland to learn about all things <strong>Ekka</strong>.The Courier-Mail & Headst@rt Education on ShowWith origins stemming back to the very first show in 1876, The Courier-Mail &Headst@rt Education on Show competition at the <strong>Ekka</strong> has attracted nearly1,000 entries from students across the state.In the <strong>2012</strong> competition, which encourages students to learn, embrace and createquality exhibits, students are being asked to celebrate the contribution farmersmake to the Australian way of life with the theme ‘our farmers, our future’.Preps to Year 12’s will show how farmers play a vital role in feeding the nation andsustaining our vital agribusinesses by writing a poem, painting a picture, scriptinga cartoon, planning a menu for hard working shearers or designing an outfit usinghome grown fibres.The Courier-Mail & Headst@rt Education on Show has been designed to cover a widerange of contemporary curriculum related skills, activities and learning areas, and isa great tool for teachers to use as assessment.Cash prizes and Edsco gift vouchers will be awarded to individuals and schools withthe popular People’s Choice Awards back again. <strong>Ekka</strong> visitors can also drop by thepavilion and make their very own windmill to take home or thank a farmer on thededicated message board.28<strong>Ekka</strong> Media Kit <strong>2012</strong>
