Dear Parents,
Message from the Principal, Mr Rick Jarman
I wish to thank the Students, Staff and Parents for
enabling Trinity Sunday to be such a wonderful
event. The day provided the opportunity to say
thanks, celebrate as a College and showcase, in the
broadest sense, the talents of our students.
Our Open Day was filled with highlights and
reflected the rich and diverse programme provided
by a holistic Trinity education. The school was, as
always, presented beautifully and quite apparent
was our continued growth and expansion.
The atmosphere that pervaded over proceedings
was welcoming, warm and proud.
Middle School Year 9 & 10 students participated in
the Annual South Australian Science and
Engineering Challenge, with outstanding success.
Our Year 10 students won the competition, with our
Year 9 students who competed against Year 10
students , ultimately coming third. This was a
fantastic result with our Year 10 group now
competing in the State Challenge for the
opportunity to represent not only the School &
College but that of the state. Congratulations to all
Year 9 & 10 students, Mr Cini and Mr Howard on
this wonderful achievement and good luck!
Achievements such as this should be rightfully
acknowledged. Our expectation, and indeed the
norm is that all students strive to perform at their
best in all pursuits. At this stage of the term it is
important to maintain a clear focus on Academic
Studies. Assessment is on going, with many
assignments and major assessment tasks due and
to be undertaken as the semester draws to a
close. An organised study regime, inclusive of
revision, is advisable.
May I remind all parents of the Parents and
Friends meeting next Thursday, 14th June 2007
in the Gawler River Chapel from 7:30pm. The
Parent Group engages itself in a diverse range of
activities and is a great opportunity to be involved
in your child’s education.
Trinity Sunday
I am able to inform you that the vacant land on
Heaslip Road, which is adjacent to the school and
next to the local bakery, has been purchased by the
College. There are no immediate plans for usage at
this stage but the decision to acquire this land was
based on possible future needs.
It would be remiss of me not to mention the
announcement that traffic lights will be installed at
the intersection of Heaslip and Angle Vale Roads.
This joint project between the Commonwealth
Government and Playford Council will no doubt have
a positive impact on traffic flow and safety in this
precinct.
We are thankful for the support we receive from
parents, whose contribution to the life of the
College in a myriad of ways is essential. It would be
fair to say that through such involvement, families
truly gain the benefits that Trinity is able to offer.
Support may simply be ensuring the College’s
standards and expectations in the wearing of the
uniform are adhered, to being a member of College
Council.
Yours sincerely,
Rick Jarman
Year 10 Career Education / Personal Learning Plan
The Year 10’s recently attended the “Try a Trade” Career Expo at
Wayville Showground. The students were able to visit a range of
displays and demonstrations about possible future career paths.
Each student has also received a copy of the Job Guide 2007. This
fantastic resource documents almost 600 occupational descriptions
and gives lots of information about pre requisites, training and qualifications.
The guide is being used in PLP lessons to assist the students
develop their knowledge about the possibilities that are available in
the workforce.
Assessment and Reporting
It is timely at this point of the semester to remind students about the
importance of keeping up to date with their class work and the assessment
tasks. Many assignments will be due as the semester draws to a
close and the process of reporting to parent begins. Some times of the
year will always be more pressured due to assessments. Parents can
support their children by helping them to manage their time at home,
so they still have time for other activities and some leisure time too!
Extensions need to be negotiated well in advance of due dates and
the students must have a note from the parent explaining why the
extension is being sought. Late submission will result in a % penalty,
as determined by the subject teacher.
Reports will be mailed home at the conclusion of Term Two.
If there is a matter that requires further discussion, please contact me
A FORUM FOR THE DISCUSSION
OF IDEAS FOR IMPROVING TRINITY COLLEGE
Hosted by Mr Ray Oermann (Chair of College Council)
and Mr Robert Smedley (Acting Head of Trinity College)
Thursday, 28 June 2007 at 7:30 pm
Meet in The Common, Trinity College Senior
just before 7:30 pm
Parents, do you have thoughts about improving Trinity College but
have nowhere to air these views?
Come and join the Parent Forum on Thursday, 28 June 2007 and
share your ideas and join the discussion
Dear Parents,
Message from Acting Headmaster,
Mr Robert Smedley
I would like to congratulate all of our students who were involved
in, or had work on display, for Trinity Sunday. The day was a great
opportunity to see the variety and excellence of the work that our
students undertake.
My thanks also go to the many parents who supported us in our day
of celebration.
Parents Forum
An invitation is extended to all College parents to attend a forum
hosted by Mr Ray Oermann (College Council Chair) and the
Acting Head to discuss ideas for improving Trinity College. Many
parents have ideas and thoughts about the operation of Trinity
College. If you are one of these people or would just like to hear
the discussion I would encourage you to book out the forum date in
your diary. The forum will be held on Thursday June 28 at 7:30pm.
Please see this newsletter for details of the Trinity College Parent
Forum.
Communications Survey
We have received just over 700 replies to our communications
survey. We are delighted with the response and thank all of the
families who took the time to offer us feedback. Collation of the
data is being undertaken and I hope to be in a position to
communicate some of the key findings to you towards the end of
this term or early in the new term.
Sports Uniform
There is nothing better than seeing a group of young sports people
arrive at a sporting venue dressed in a smart team uniform.
All members of College sports teams should be suitably attired in
the college sports uniform. Except for members of the First and
Second XVIII football teams, who wear the full College uniform,
students should attend sports venues in the College sports uniform,
which includes plain blue tracksuit pants and the College rugby top.
Jewellery is not part of any sports uniform and is definitely not to
be worn on the field or court.
I thank the many parents who support the College in establishing
and maintaining high standards in our students’ sporting attire.
Hat Policy
The College is currently reviewing its hat wearing policy. We are
using the Sun Smart Guidelines put out by The Cancer Council of
SA to direct our discussion..
Although the wearing of hats is currently not a compulsory part of
the College uniform in Terms 2 and 3, students are encouraged to
be sun safe by wearing hats and sunglasses as parents deem
appropriate during this time of the year.
With my best wishes,
Robert Smedley
(Acting Head of Trinity College)

The Science and Engineering Challenge for 2007 was held at the Adelaide Super
Drome from Monday May 28 to Friday June 1.
The Science and Engineering Challenge is a set of fun and competitive activities
involving principles of science, engineering and technology. The concept is to
immediately engage students in the activity with a minimum of introduction and
theory. Students explored scientific principles for themselves rather than being
guided to a predetermined answer.
Last year, our Year 9 students were successful in winning their Heat. This year
we decided to enter two teams into the competition; Team A being our Year 10
and Team B being our Year 9 students.
Activities included;
Electra City
Students were given a board with which they can simulate power distribution.
Students were provided with different quality cables and were required to make
all loads operate. Students were assessed on the cost of their network, and how
many loads are shed due to failure of a power source.
Back to the Future
Students were provided with a vehicle on which they attach a propeller or fan to
drive the vehicle along rails. The students developed their own fan and
experimented with diameter and pitch. The vehicles were timed over a set
distance and bonus points were available for accuracy and control.
Escape from the Lost World
This activity involved making a frame onto which helium filled balloons were
attached. The motive power was supplied by pre-wired motors and propellers,
one to provide lift and two to give the motive power. Once the craft was built it
was flown around a course.
There were some good designs from both teams. Dominic Stevens, Steven Fry,
Laurence Gosling and Cameron Gliese were disadvantaged after they had to wait
for another supply of helium. This group didn’t have the practice time that other
groups had. The Year 9 team; Van Nguyen, William Caruso, Nick Anders and
Mark Clifford design was excellent.
War Machine for Austium
This activity involved constructing a catapult from given materials and launching
a tennis ball. Points were awarded for distance.
Luke Arbon, Sam Pfitzner and Luke Kearney had strong competition from
Andrew Zaimis, Joshua Flavel, Nathan Brand and Andrew Barass. After some
tense moments, the Year 10 team broke their elastic band giving the Year 9 team
the opportunity to come second overall.
Great Tea Race
This activity involved the making of hulls out of thin plastic and electrician’s
tape covered with lunch wrap to ensure they were watertight. These hulls were
drawn through water by a simple pulley and the time taken for the hulls to travel
a set distance is recorded. There were two attempts and the hull was loaded with
75 and 225g weights.
The Year 10 team, Sianne Staker, Claire Chandler and Nicole Roelofsen did a
wonderful time and their times were one of the fastest. Unfortunately, Team B
struggled with their design.
Mission to Mars
This required students to construct a vehicle from materials provided to
transverse an undulating surface. Students used rubber bands to provide the
tension for the suspension system.
I was impressed by the skills of our girls in this activity. Tahlia Sherriff, Vanessa
Whitehead, lead by Catherine Schroeter designed a wonderful craft. Team B;
Madison MacDonald, Georgia Lippe, Staci Turner and Nathan Zaimis started
slow, but their design also proved to be successful.
Hover Frenzy
Students were given a lift fan and two motorized propulsion units together with
Styrofoam, balsa, rubber strip and tape to construct a small hovercraft.
There was strong competition between both Teams. Kyle Lightfoot, Ben Bridle
and Jessica Rallis worked well on their design, but the Year 9 team; Jordan
Braithwaite, Nartine Tersteeg, Alicia Gerardis and Shannen Baker struggled.
After some assistance from Kyle, the Year 9 team began to work well and
eventually won the activity.
Gold Fever
This was a bridge building activity that uses a standard test rig to deliver a
dynamic load. Construction materials were supplied and were limited to those
materials. The lightest bridge to hold the load wins.
This activity was the final activity. After some tense moments, the Year 9 team
had worked their way from sixth to first place and the Year 10 team worked their
way from fifth to second. The final placing was decided by the Gold Fever.
Throughout the morning, the Year 10 Team, Daniel Hines, Jessica Foster, Steven
Murray and Chenelle Ellis worked well, but the Year 9 Team, Todd Emmett,
Lucas Cini, Reece Paul and Tim Hines started slow. In the end, the Year 10
Team was victorious, winning the event. This promoted the Year 10 Team into
first place and the Year 9 Team falling back to third.
Congratulations to the Year 9 Team for challenging the other 7 teams,
particularly when these teams were all Year 10 students. They offered a strong
challenge and will be difficult to beat next year.
Congratulations to the Year 10 team who won the Heat for the day. They will be
participating in the State Final to be held in August. If they are successful in the
finals, the Year 10 Team will be invited to participate at the National
Competitions in Toowoomba in October.
STUDIES OF AUSTRALIA
Following their Coastal studies and field trip to the Adelaide
metropolitan coastline, the Year 10s have undertaken the
topic titled “Image Reality”. This unit looks at the way in
which Australia portrays itself within the world and also how
it markets or promotes itself to the world, versus what is
actually the reality of everyday Australia. They have
completed an assignment involving essay writing and the
production of either a model or poster. Some of this year’s
models are the best I have seen.
In the last couple of weeks we have studied “Hazards and
Disasters”. We will be applying the general concepts to the
examples of earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, El
Nino, La Nina and bushfires.
GEOGRAPHY
The Year 8s have finally completed an intensive unit centred
on “Mapping”. This culminated with the Year 8 Camp at
Woodhouse. We have now turned our focus to “Ecosystems”
with our prime focus of “Tropical Rainforests”. Students will
investigate various concepts including food chains and food
webs, nutrient cycles, the locations of rainforests in the
world, their importance, and various threats to these
ecosystems and programs established to ensure the survival
of them.
SCIENCE
The Year 8s have just completed a major Chemistry topic.
They have proudly produced a poster on an element from
the Periodic Table. They have also undertaken a number of
practicals including the production of Hydrogen and Carbon
Dioxide gas, a simple compound and discovering what
makes a substance a metal or not.
The Year 9s have just completed a unit called “Forensic
Science”. They have focused on observation and investigation
techniques, fingerprinting, the use of microscopes and
the production of slides, the difference between plant and
animal cells and how bacteria invade dead bodies!
The Year 9s have now moved onto the topic of “Sports
Science” where we will examine the various systems which
work together to form the complex machine known as the
human body. We will then relate this to the sporting arena
and Science and how people are trying to improve their
performance both, legally, and not so.
AGRICULTURE
The Year 10s are completing a major topic centred on
Sheep. They have investigated the various breeds, the
management of sheep between mating and lambing and
other sheep management and husbandry. They have even
completed an assignment where they had to produce a meal
using Lamb for their family’s consumption! Their main
practicals have focused on sheep handling including,
mustering, drafting, catching and throwing, mouthing and
estimating weight. Other practicals have seen them
performing various tasks at the Gawler River site, such as
regular maintenance of the vegetable patch.
Thanks for a great year so far, Gawler River!
Mr James Howard

The 2007 Interschool Gymkhana, held at the Gawler Racecourse on Thursday
12th April, was again part of the Steinborner Holden Gawler Horse Festival. With
publicity through the EFA, a record 31 schools attended the event and made for
fierce competition all day.
Trinity College won the prestigious Iris Stephenson Teams Perpetual Trophy for
the first time since 1995. A rigorous team practice, at our arena, on the
Wednesday prior to the event ensured the team looked spectacular. Horses and
riders matched and worked in formation throughout the Grand Parade.
The Interschool Gymkhana Perpetual Trophy was won by Birdwood High School
with 47 points. In second place was Trinity with 40 points, followed by Faith (34),
Clare (33), St Marks (33) and Gawler.
Riders to score points for Trinity were Emma Tucker, Kimberley Teusner, Sarah
Langdon, Chenelle Ellis, Bonnie McKerlie, Jessica Oldenbeuring, Katie Pittam,
Sophie Thomson, Rhianna Shepperd, Natalie Bazeley, Amelia Schmidt and
The Year 8 English class recently viewed the film
Mrs Doubtfire.
As part of their response to the film, the
students were asked to make an oral
presentation to the class and to use
appropriate props.
This poem was written by Caitlin Blacker and
used as part of her presentation.
Paper Bag Response for Mrs Doubtfire
I have prepared a bag of goodies
But not as you might think
It isn’t filled with lollies
And you will not find a drink
You’ll see each of these items
Will hold a special clue
That represent the movie
I will talk about with you
A love heart for Daniel’s children
You know he loved them so
He couldn’t live without them
And he didn’t want to go
Two rings to show divorce
It’s not a lovely thought
It broke up their family
And took them both to court
And now my friends I must present
The calendar I’ve brought
I’ve highlighted a Saturday
The kids would see their dad today
A book for Natalie,
She used to read with dad
It shows how familiar they are
Without it she’d be sad
A broom to show the cleaning
Mrs Doubtfire was to do
It helped Daniel to grow up
And it helped Miranda too!
Newspaper for her random name,
The movie wouldn’t be the same
If they had left this scene out
I don’t know what they’d be thinking about
Perfume shows Daniel’s feminine side,
You know it caused some strife
But all was fine when we gave it some time
It became a big part of his life
And so my oral has come to an end
I hope that you enjoyed it
You’ve been fantastic wonderful and great
Thank you for your time Year 8’s

What do we do?
The question has once again been raised “ what do we do?” and “ what do we spend
our money on?”
In a nutshell, the Parents and Friends are responsible to provide support to the
school by enhancing its daily life. This is done through fundraising providing an
opportunity for parents to pass on concerns or praise to the school, plus providing
social settings for parents to interact, discuss and relax.
As for the fundraising all money with the exception of the Biggest Morning Tea
which is donations, EVERYTHING we do, Grandparents Day, Welcome Morning
Teas, Tuesday cuppas, Welcoming Receptions, Trinity Sunday, Bookweek, general
daily help and enhancement of the school, is funded by the Parents and Friends. It
Parents and Friends News
is the money we raise on each fundraiser that helps to provide these needs. At
present our yearly budget needs equal about $2500.
So when you ask, why doesn't the P&F do this or that? The answer is, we try, but
it depends on the response to fundraising.
Below is a FAQ ( frequently asked questions with answers). Take a moment to
read it, hopefully it will answer your questions. if not, then ask!
FAQ ( Frequently asked questions) for Parents and Friends
Q:What do the P&F do?
A: The Parents and Friends provide support for the school in a number of
ways. eg: Trinity Sunday, Lunches on Sports Day, Activites for Book Week,
Helpers on Special Activity Days, Morning Tea for Grandparents, Fundraising
or resources to enhance the school, Social events for parents and students
throughout the year. If there is an event, chances are, the Parents and Friends
will be there
Q:When are the meetings?
A: Meetings are held once a month at night. In addition ‘day’ gatherings have
been planned (Check newsletter and Calender). This allows discussion and
planning for events. These meetings are for discussion and gathering of
information. Final decisions of fundraisers and social events are made by the
Executive based on the recommendations of the monthly gatherings. This
concept has not changed.
Q: What happens to fundraising money?
A: The P&F are responsible for the financing of all events we hold throughout
the year... ( there are one or two exceptions)
In 2007, our required budget for annual events totals approx $2500. Therefore
in order to participate in anything else, or to provide requested items, we need
to raise the money through fundraising.
Q:How can I help the P&F?
A: There are a number of ways you can help the Parents and Friends. If you
have an interest you can attend the day gatherings and or night meetings, this
gives you a first hand chance to be involved on the discussion level. Otherwise
keep an eye on the newsletter, We are ALWAYS looking for help leading up to
events.
Q: How can I join the Parents and Friends?
A: Our Annual General meeting is usually held in the first month of the school
year. At this time the Executive committee is elected. All Parents are welcome
to attend the meetings / gatherings throughout the year. . Parent helpers can
contact the Parents and Friends to register their interest for helping
throughout the year.
Q: How do I contact the Parents and Friends?
A: you can contact the Parents and Friends at Gawler River School either via
the schools front office on ph 82849257 or email : gawlerriver.PandF@trinity.sa.edu.au
