CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTComputer Vision, in particular, Image and Video Processing, 2D and 3D Object Detection andRecognition, Computer Networking and Robotics.6. PREVIOUS RESEARCH WORKS AND APPLICATIONS DEVELOPED6.1 PhD Thesis:• Supervisors: Winthrop Professor Mohammed Bennamon, Professor Robyn Owensand Dr. Rowan Davies.• Title: Human Recognition Using Local 3D Ear and Face Features.• Abstract: The main objectives of my PhD work are to develop an efficient and robustapproach for ear and face detection, data representation and finally, to construct arobust fusion approach to combine these two modalities for human recognition. Wehave developed a technique for ear detection from 2D profile images based on theCascaded AdaBoost algorithm using Haar-like features. After detection of the earregion, 3D ear data is extracted from the corresponding range profile images. A fastapproach for ear recognition using Local 3D Features is developed. Local features areused for developing a rejection classifier, to extract a minimal rectangular featurerichregion and to compute the initial transformation for the ICP algorithm. Animproved technique for feature matching is also proposed using geometricconsistency among the corresponding features. To combine the ear and the facebiometrics, at first a score-level fusion technique is used. Then these two modalitiesare fused at feature level based on the similarity of the shape of the two modalities.MATLAB and C++ are used for programming and a 2D still camera and a 3D shortrangescanner (Konica Minolta Vivid 910) are used for data acquisition. 6.2 MS Thesis:• Supervisor: Professor Mayez Al-Mouhamed, Professor Mohammad Sarfraz andAsstt. Professor Talal Alkharobi.• Title: Design of a Graphical User Interface to Augment a Telerobotic Stereo- visionSystem.• Abstract: In a telerobotic stereo-vision system, real video image is taken from therobot work site using two cameras that have a horizontal disparity of about 6 cm andrendered over a LAN. On the client side, the scene is observed by the operator usinga Head-Mounted Display (HMD) that provides stereo views and 3D perception of theremote objects. The purpose of my thesis work was to augment this stereo visionsystem by overlaying graphics and virtual objects on to the real scene (AugmentedReality, AR) to allow combining several elementary actions (plan generation) andsimulations. I studied various camera models and techniques used to provide amathematical mapping from 3D space onto the camera space and developed andimplemented the efficient one. Some geometric and graphical tools were alsodeveloped to display virtual objects accurately on the real stereo image and agraphical user interface was designed to provide system calibration and manipulationof objects using AR services. A performance evaluation was conducted to verify theaccuracy of the augmented mathematical tools, and usefulness of the servicesprovided as compared to other proposals. Microsoft Visual C++ and C#.NET,Microsoft DirectX9, MATLAB and other graphical tools are used for developing thesoftware.6.3 PGDTE Special Studies: A comparative analysis of the effect of using various teachingaids and developing a computerized teachers evaluation system.6.4 Undergrad Final Year Project:Developing software for computerizing the result processing system of IslamicInstitute of Technology using Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 and MS Access 2000.6.5 Completed Post Graduate Course Projects Works:• Literature review and performance evaluation of various motion capture algorithms.• Literature review and comparative studies on various radio resource managementtechniques, wireless data services for UMTS, Network-on-chip (NoC) Design andimplementation and on techniques of testing core-based system.• Designing a Voice-over IP (VoIP) network and simulating it using OPNET.• Modeling and simulating the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) usingPROMELA and SPIN respectively.• Investigating various Thread-Level Parallelism techniques and simulating an SMTprocessor using programming language C.6.6 Application Software Developed:
