Extra Time Club


Background• QPR in the Community Trust is a RegisteredCharity (1127806).• Established in 1994 as Football in theCommunity, obtained charitable status 2009.• Our aims are to provide projects based in thelocal <strong>community</strong> that will have a positiveoutcome on participants health, education,social inclusion or participation.• We are no longer just football based but havea multi activity <strong>approach</strong> to challenge issuesfaced in disadvantaged ordeprived areas of London.


Background• We work in 5 London boroughs –Hammersmith & Fulham, Brent, Hillingdon,Westminster <strong>and</strong> Kensington & Chelsea• In 2010 we worked on over 180 differentschemes of work.• Most of our work is in partnership toincrease the positive impact <strong>and</strong> reach of ourprojects• All projects are monitored on substanceonline evaluation scheme.


Extra Time Project• QPR in the Community Trust made asuccessful bid to the Football Foundation &Sport Relief in 2009. The first Extra Timesession was held on 11th November 2009.• We advertised the sessions in the localnewspaper, p in the <strong>club</strong> programme <strong>and</strong>website, at local GPs, chemists, <strong>community</strong>centres <strong>and</strong> other local groups for our targetage range.• In week one 25 local residents attended.Since then the number of members hasgrown to 56 with an average weeklyattendance of around 35.


Extra Time Project• We started ted by giving ing the group tasters s indifferent <strong>sports</strong> <strong>and</strong> a tour of the Footballstadium, we then asked them for feedbackinto what they would like us to book asregular sessions in 6 week blocks.• The sessions run weekly on a Wednesdayd10am-12noon. 12noon.• Most members walk to the group <strong>and</strong> live inthe local White City estate. This is classifiedas a Super Output Area being in the top10% of deprived d wards in the UK.• The sessions have been run at the stadiummaking it a <strong>community</strong> hub for the group<strong>and</strong> accessible to the members.


Extra Time Objectives• To deliver a varied physical activity programme.The aim is to have a positive impact on theirphysical health <strong>and</strong> well being.• To opo provide deapato platform for increasedceasedsocialisation, reducing loneliness <strong>and</strong> isolation.To create friendships <strong>and</strong> fun for the group.• To increase awareness of health issues inpartnership with NHS Hammersmith & Fulham.• To make the group feel part of QPR <strong>and</strong> havean affiliation to the <strong>club</strong>.• The group to have an input into how thesessions are run.• To extend opportunities outside ofthe group for participants.


Project Delivery• The group have taken part in Tai Chi,Aerobics, Line Dancing, Croquet & Boules in5/6 week blocks. The project ran for 36Weeks in year 1 & is running from Sept2010 to end of July 2011 in year 2.• We have provided platforms for socialising:every week they have an hour where theycan talk <strong>and</strong> catch up with their friends. Wehave also run quizzes <strong>and</strong> sessions wherewe have provided food. Another bigcontribution to this was the day trip.


Project delivery• So far the group have had health checksfrom local NHS health champions <strong>and</strong> havealso had a talk about EPP – the expertpatient programme.• The group are regularly given complimentarytickets to first team games. They have alsofeatured in the QPR match day programme<strong>and</strong> on both the QPR & Trust websites.• The Extra Time group vote on activities theywish to take part in <strong>and</strong> on the annual daytrip. We try our best to accommodate allideas <strong>and</strong> suggestions.


Project Delivery• We have now set up the “Extra Time WalkingClub” in partnership with GroundworkLondon. This is a separate session run on adifferent day of the week.• The project is monitored by the FootballFoundation <strong>and</strong> also on QPR in theCommunity Trust’s online reporting systemSubstance.• We have also involved the group in other<strong>community</strong> projects. At present they areassisting us with their local knowledge as weput together a bid to the Heritage Lotteryfund in partnership with theOctavia Foundation about QPR<strong>and</strong> the history of the local area.

Statistics & ImpactIn the feedback at the end of the first yearhere e are the results of the benefits felt bythe group:• 88% said they felt healthier• 83% said they have more energy• 97% said they have made new friends <strong>and</strong>had fun• 92% said it had motivated them toexercise more regularlyl• 85% felt happier with lifeWhen asked if they planned to take part inother moderate exercise,recreational activities or <strong>sports</strong>:• 88% said yes


Statistics & Impact• Many of the group do not feel confident intravelling any distance alone, therefore theday trip had a huge impact on the group.• The staff involved find it rewarding <strong>and</strong> fun.It reduces preconceptions about growingolder <strong>and</strong> provides cross generationalfriendships.• Many of the participants hadn’t been to aQPR game before the course started. Mostof them would now consider themselves asfans. In the first steering group meeting itwas stated that the comp ticketsmade them feel closer to QPR.


Statistics & ImpactFor the first 15 months of the project thefigures from Substance are as follows(figures up until end of Jan 2011):• 56 participantsp• 113 session hours delivered• 52 sessions delivered• 1431 aggregate attendance at sessions• 56 hours 58 minutes is the averagecontact hours per participant


Key Partnerships & Funding• Football Foundation <strong>and</strong> Sport Relief fundingsecured until 2012.• Key partners: NHS Hammersmith & Fulham(Judith Ralphs Health improvementmanager sits on steering group)• Groundwork London (Steve Davis SportCoordinator takes the Thursday walkingsession)• Successful application to Field of Dreams tostart up the “Extra Time Bowls Club” in2011 – this will be run as a separate weeklysession, therefore increasing theirphysical activity / socialisation.
