THE BIG NEWSA B O U T S M A L L G R A D E R STHE BIG NEWSA B O U T S M A L L G R A D E R SIssue 1JuLY 2008Report From ConExpo 2008By Bryan Abernathy, Vice President Sales & MarketingConExpo comes along only once in threeyears but, I can tell you, it sure was worththe wait. At ConExpo 2005, we were stillin the midst of re-launching Champion asa private family-owned business. A lot hashappened since then, and ConExpo 2008gave us the chance to show off some of ourrecent achievements. The “big” surprise for visitors was ourintroduction of the industry’s first ProductionClass Graders, our new C110/116 modelgraders. One of the highlights of the showfor me was the time we spent with atrue champion, Mr. George Chuvalo. Werecruited Mr. Chuvalo, one of the greatboxers of the Ali/Foreman era, to help usunveil our new “heavyweight Champion.”He proved to be everything that the title of“champion” represents, and it was an honorto have a few days with him.Our Production Class Graders bridgethe gap between our line of CompactGraders and the large graders producedby traditional OEMs, weighing in around24,000 lbs. and powered by a Tier 3133 hp Cummins engine. Grader peoplehave recognized that gap as an obviousshortcoming in the equipment world formany years. We were very proud to presentour answer at ConExpo, and to show howProduction Class Graders are the rightmachine for customers who need moreearthmoving power than a compact grader, while still outperforming large graders formaneuverability, versatility, and operatingefficiency. Visitors’ response was veryenthusiastic, and we’re looking forward tobringing the C110 and C116 models onstream within the year.Along with the huge engineering effort thatwent into the C110 and C116, our teamwas still able to continue refining advancedfeatures for our complete line. Our C86model on display was outfitted with aMoba blade control system while the C110demonstrated a 3D GPS system courtesy ofCarlson Software. We owe a special thanksto Moba’s Joey Farrell and Todd Newsomas well as Dave Jordan from Carlson. Theypulled out all the stops to have the systemsready for showtime, then stayed on to do agreat job representing Champion throughoutthe show. We were also proud to announceour upcoming Tier 3 emissions compliancefor all Champion Compact Graders. Watchfor further announcements this Fall as ournew “green” machines start rolling out.Including our two Production Class models, the Champion lineup will include a full rangeof seven graders that set the standardfor environmental performance as well asproductivity and safety.Good luck, Strongco!Champion is pleased to welcomeStrongco Equipment as our authorizeddealer in Ontario, Canada. We are alsopleased to remind you that, contraryto some reports, Strongco has notpurchased Champion Motor Graders! Some confusion has resulted from ourshared history with Champion MotorGrader Sales Limited, a retail division ofVolvo Group Canada that was recentlyacquired by Strongco. Under the neworganization, the Ontario locationsof Strongco will continue servicingChampion customers, and Championwill continue to manufacture theindustry’s most versatile graders.Big ideas at work in small graders!

Putting OurFoot Down ForGrader SafetySmall Graders“Make It Big” InIsland CommunitiesWhen space is at a premium, small graders gowhere the big graders can’t!Like many coastal areas, VancouverIsland poses special problems for pavingbusinesses. A rocky terrain, limited buildingland and environmental regulations restricthow and where graders can operate. These conditions led two of the Island’slargest paving companies to add compactgraders to their fleet with Champion. In congested worksites, ChampionGraders get the job done with room tospare for other equipment and for safety.Capital City Paving Ltd. specializes inresidential and small commercial pavingprojects in the City of Victoria and on thelocal islands, with a fleet of four full-sizegraders. Russ Trace, a partner in the firm, says, “My grader operators are continuallyworking uphill, downhill and around cornersof rock. We often have to pave around trees, rather than take them out.” Operator JackFantetti agrees: “With its hydrostatic drive, the Champion is the perfect machine forsmaller projects that require detailing andfinish grading. For a small machine, it is reallypowerful and pushes quite a bit of material, even going uphill.”At Island Asphalt, where Fred McMurray isEquipment Manager, a Champion C80 runsalongside seven large graders. “These smallgraders keep us very competitive in thesmaller market. They’re just built better. Andwhen we have a job out on one of the smallislands, we can just drive it onto the ferry.”Visit us online for the full storyA Champion adthat has beenrunning recentlyhas attractedattention in andout of the industry.Under the heading “Your OperatorDeserves A Brake,” the ad shows acouple of school children crossing thestreet in front of a Champion Grader. Its purpose is to highlight the needfor safety on graders that spend alot of time on public streets, whetherroading between jobsites or performingmaintenance tasks. That’s why a pedaloperatedservice brake is standardequipment on every Champion Grader. At the 2008 Association of EquipmentManufacturers Marketing Conference, this ad earned recognition as PICA“Measures of Excellence” award winner. The awards are presented by a jury ofindustry publishers and editors.Equipment safety is a concern that’snear and dear to all of us at Champion. Our concern is reflected in morefeatures of our graders, too, such asfully tested ROPS/FOPS protection and360 o visibility from the cab.We appreciate the extra boost fromAEM in helping us to get the word out!The Big News About Small Graders
