JOB SUMMARYReporting to the Recreation Programmer, the Recreation Support Worker is responsible for theplanning and implementing of recreation services for the <strong>Kwanlin</strong> <strong>Dun</strong> <strong>First</strong> <strong>Nation</strong> and itscitizens.The Support Worker coordinates and delivers programs such as Summer Camp and SpringBreak Camp, Mobile Youth Center, and projects that involve recreation for adults and Elders. TheSupport Worker also plays a key role in establishing and fulfilling of the Recreation programmandate, as well as ensuring that the Recreation and Youth programs reflect communityaspirations and needs. The Support Worker is responsible for achieving quality service deliveryfor the objectives and outputs of the outlined in the Health Department’s workplan.B. MAIN DUTIES1. Implements the various recreation programs which may involve coordinating fundraisingactivities, transportation to and from activities/sports, organizing games, outdoor activities,tournaments, family events, holiday activities, youth leadership opportunities and sport activities.2. Assists Coordinator in planning and modifying recreation programming as the recreation programgrows within the community. Assists Programmer in monitoring programming delivered to ensureit is responding to community needs.3. Ensures safety and risk management are paramount in all decision making during recreationprogramming. Refers to guidelines established in policy and procedure manual when developingand delivering programming.4. Manages basic budgets directly related to programming. Files receipts with Health Center andtracks all expenditures.5. Coordinates the involvement of local Elders to all programming. Ensures programming isculturally relevant and include traditional language components.6. Participates in staff development training and seeks out potential relevant training opportunities.Identifies appropriate training for community volunteers, coaches and youth including <strong>Nation</strong>alCoaching Certification Program clinics, youth workshops, and youth conferences.7. Establish a volunteer pool, identify and recruit volunteers to organize events and activities.1


8. Networks with various organizations within the Territory. Promotes partner agencies andprograms information, maintaining files and resource materials on available services to KDFNcommunity members.C. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE• Post Secondary Degree or Diploma in Recreational Studies, Outdoor Education or EarlyChildhood Development and / or equivalent combination of education, training and experience.• Knowledge of <strong>First</strong> <strong>Nation</strong> government systems, social issues affecting <strong>First</strong> <strong>Nation</strong>s, and anawareness of Land Claims and Self-government issues around recreation and youthdevelopment• Knowledge of the social structure in KDFN, families, and the social conditions and socialdynamics prevailing in the community• Knowledge of KDFN history, culture, demographics, goals and aspirations.• Knowledge of community service organizations offering Recreation and / or Youth services withinthe territory.• Experience in working with children and delivering day camps to youth ages 6-12.• Experience in leading groups in of various ages during recreation activities.Specific Skills• Knowledge of traditional and contemporary sports, games and teambuilding activities• Knowledge of recreation equipment and supplies• Ability to develop annual and monthly program activity plans and schedules• Ability to recruit and coordinate training for community volunteersOffice Equipment Skills• Computer Skills (Windows and Office), Internet, E-mail, Word Processing, Spreadsheet and otherstandard office equipment; telephone, fax, photocopier, calculator etc.Interpersonal Skills• Conflict resolution and mediation skills• Co-ordination and facilitation skills• Motivational skills• Leadership• Sensitivity• Respectful/Non-judgemental• Creative/Animated• Credible to target group• Initiative/Self starter/works without direct supervision• Ability to work on a team• FlexibilityD. Direction/Decision Making:The Recreation Programmer in conjunction with this position establishes goals, objectives andexpectations. The Recreation Support Worker is expected to make day to day operationaldecisions within the area of assigned responsibility. The position is expected to advise theProgrammer, or Director when issues or concerns arise that may adversely impact on the deliveryof any health and community development programs for specific groups and individuals. Finalapproval for new programming rests with the Director, or assigned Manager.F. Impact and Accountability:This position is accountable for the efficient and effective development and operation of theRecreation Program, within the parameters of KDFN policy, departmental budgets and workplans.The success of this position has a direct impact on the delivery of the overall HealthPrograms, staff morale, workflow, information sharing, and on the overall goal of fostering astrong quality of life that nourishes and heals the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual healthof the community.G. Positions Supervised:The position will have direct supervisory responsibilities for youth recreation workers during YouthCamps and youth Recreation programming.H. Working Conditions:Spiritual:• The position may interact with individuals with different values, beliefs, experiences and training.Physical:• This position is located in the community health centre and out in the community or at otherdepartments/agencies.• This position requires physical fitness and well-being, with extensive involvement in communityactivities.Mental:• The position is strongly self-directed, relying on the incumbent’s creativity, initiative andleadership. Program development requires periods of focused concentration.Emotional:• The position may be required to deal with dissatisfied clients and family members from time to time.I. Conditions of Employment:It is a requirement of this position that the employee be aware that under the provisions of theCanada Labor Code, any employee would be in a direct conflict of interest if they took part in anypublic action against their employer (Chief& Council, KDFN Administration, KDFN Programs /Projects). Mandatory confidentiality is a condition of employment for all staff of the Health CenterProgram. Failure to comply will result in dismissal. Employees are expected to follow allguidelines in a harmonious and cooperative manner, creating a team approach in their duties forKDFN’s future success.
