EDITORIALSylvain Cuperlier,VP of WorldwideCorporate Responsibilityand SustainabilityAs mentioned in the message announcing theposting of our last newsletter on our CorporateResponsibility & Sustainability (CR&S) website, wefound a gem when we discovered, in our archives,a Corporate Responsibility brochure entitled “TheLives We Touch” and produced by Castle and Cooke(Dole’s parent company at that time) back in…1979.This brochure is also available on our CR&S website,in our “Press” section. The publication of this brochure is just anotherproof demonstrating that Corporate Responsibilityand Sustainability is part of the Company’s DNA andthat Dole was doing it, even before the term wasinvented.Dole, as depicted in our 1979 CR&S brochure, hasalso been very active in developing CorporateResponsibility & Sustainability programs in thePhilippines. In our second edition, we already had thepleasure to interview Joemil Montebon, ExecutiveDirector of the Kasilak Development Foundation whichhas been working together with Stanfilco since 1997.This time, and also in light of the recent agreementsigned with Itochu, we wanted to pay tribute to oursecond Dole division in the Philippines for what theyhave accomplished since 1963 in the Polomolok area.To this end, we have interviewed, in our “Who’s Who”section, Melquiades Hernandez III, Human ResourcesDirector at Dolefil, our Packaged Foods division inMindanao, Philippines. This sixth edition of our CR&S newsletter is thusaimed at providing you with additional informationregarding the history of some of the many CorporateResponsibility and Sustainability programs theCompany has implemented worldwide. To thisend, you will find in the “Did You Know” sectiona wonderful story which will transport you toHonduras at the end of the nineteenth century whenthe Vaccaro Brothers & Co. (ancestors of StandardFruit Company de Honduras) settled there. Thisstory will tell you how Dole has contributed to buildinfrastructure in the area of la Ceiba and transformthis small village into the country’s third largest cityin less than one century.I would finally invite you to have a look at our “What’sNew” section to catch-up with the new developmentsrelated to CR&S at Dole. In addition, Dole wasrecently recognized by several European consumerorganizations for the Company’s environmental andlabor programs as well as for our transparency. Inorder not to infringe copyright, we cannot publish thearticles in this newsletter but should you be interestedin reading the surveys, a few copies of the magazinesare available upon request in our CR&S department.
