<strong>PhotoIreland</strong><strong>Festival</strong> <strong>2013</strong>New Irish Works1–31 July• • •1

David Thomas Smith, from the series ‘Anthropocene’ Burj Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 2009Welcome to<strong>PhotoIreland</strong><strong>Festival</strong> <strong>2013</strong>In <strong>2013</strong>, we celebrate the fourth edition of the <strong>PhotoIreland</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>. This year weaim to highlight the growing numbers of emerging practitioners in and from Irelandwho despite being recognised and published abroad in equal measures may still bestruggling to find the right local channels by which to get noticed. This unclassifiedand unnamed wave of artists has been gathering numbers and strength overthe last decade and are pushing their way into international contemporaryphotography with great success.Well-informed and well read, some are graduates of third level programmesestablished and taught by the previous generation of Irish photographers, whileothers have come from other lands to call this their artistic home. If a time mustbe found to celebrate their efforts, let this year be it. We have set out to open aconversation around their practice and bring attention to it because it is part ofwhat currently defines us, and it is certainly our future. The result of this process is New Irish Works, our main exhibition this year.Conceived as a multi-city experience, it offers the selected projects of 25 artistsin and from Ireland throughout seven venues in Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Theexhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same title, kindly sponsoredand printed by Castle Print, Galway. It is an ambitious exhibition that could nothave been produced without the help and support of all our funders, partners andsponsors, and the effort and passion of many individuals, as much as the artiststhemselves – and we all hope you enjoy it.We have two very exciting exhibitions at The Copper House Gallery, in Dublin:David Galjaard’s Concresco, and Cristina De Middel’s The Afronauts. Both relativelyunknown this time last year, they rapidly gained international recognition on thestrength of how their projects translated to the photobook format and its specificnarrative. To have these two artists in Dublin, at The Copper House Gallery, is anexceptional opportunity. Do not miss it.An Uncertain State, the keynote exhibition at the Gallery of PhotographyIreland, investigates how photography is responding to the crisis. It presents theworks of the Aslyum Archive, Eoin O Conaill, Doug DuBois, David Farrell, KimHaughton, Paddy Kelly, Lauren McGookin, Paul Nulty, Pete Smyth, and Una Spain. There is a very interesting programme of talks to accompany the show, involvingkey figures in academia. The featured exhibitions include a selection of key shows in July, in Dublin,Limerick and Cork: Cruel And Unusual, Sirius Arts Centre; The Artist’s Eye:4 5

Photographic Portraits Of Artists, The Lewis Glucksman Gallery; the 183rd RHAAnnual Exhibition; Willie Doherty, Secretion, The Annex, IMMA @ NCH; StartingOver, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios; Maurice Gunning, Source, Dance House; andExperiments With Photography, Stoney Road Press. We would like to acknowledgethe hard work that has gone into each one of these, most of it behind the scenes,by passionate and dedicated professionals – it is our intention to highlight them, and invite you to enjoy them. The 30 exhibitions in the CANON Open Programme offer a varied array ofworks, from Hugh McElveen to Marian Schmidt, and exciting venues like FaberStudios, The Chocolate Factory, Siteation, and the New Art Gallery. We aredelighted to include the University of Ulster’s Photography MFA show, at SouthStudios; it is certainly an outstanding exhibition. This year, we have placed special attention on developing the Summer Campusinto ‘a space to converse, reflect and create’. You will enjoy the latest photobooks, magazines and fanzines, plus our modest yet mind-boggling collection of over800 contemporary publications from The Library Project. The 6th Fotobook <strong>Festival</strong>Kassel, brings for the first time to Ireland, and all the way from Germany, the 50shortlisted books from their international open submission. Also for the first time, the best works from POPCAP ‘13 prize for Contemporary African Photography willbe exhibited in Dublin, Limerick and Cork. The Summer Campus includes a greatselection of talks, workshops and films, all listed in this <strong>catalogue</strong>.Screened at the IFI, Dublin, Cathy Pearson’s ‘Get The Picture’, explores thecareer of John G Morris, former Picture Editor for Life Magazine, The New York Timesand executive editor of Magnum Photos. It is a fascinating insight into seventyyears of a professional career that saw him dealing with the most importantphotojournalists, and how it affected his worldview.Personally, I could not understand this world without the Arts, so I believe itis essential to share efforts to support them, especially in a country with a wealthof creativity like Ireland. It would be great if we all joined the energy generated byThe National Campaign for the Arts (NCFA.ie) and help preserve our hard earnedcultural assets. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all those individuals andorganisations who over the last four years have been supporting the festival, toour funders, sponsors and partners, in particular the Arts Council of Ireland andthe city councils of Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Also thanks to all those artists andorganisations participating this year.Let’s celebrate!Ángel Luis González Fernández<strong>Festival</strong> Founder & DirectorFIRE IS IRELAND’S FAVOURITEPHOTOGRAPHIC AND FINE ARTPRINTING STUDIO.Our clients trust us to produce great workbecause of:Friendly service and years of experienceOne-to-one advice and guidanceBoth Lambda and Giclee printingSpecialist mounting optionsMuseum and conservation framing serviceAffordable prices - the keenest in Ireland!FireTWO PHOTOGRAPHIC GALLERY SPACESEXHIBITING THE WORK OF LEADING IRISHAND INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS.Exhibitions include:Anthony Haughey Settlement, featured in The Irish TimesDave Walsh The Cold Edge, featured in The GuardianTiane Doan Na Champassak Showroom, featured on The WorksCristina de Middel The Afronauts, featured worldwide6www.thecopperhousegallery.com

New Irish WorksDublinIntroductionNew Irish Works presents photographic projects by 25 artists, proposing a selectionof what constitutes a testament to the wealth and legacy of photographyin Ireland. In the process of reviewing photography in Ireland, <strong>PhotoIreland</strong> established apanel of curators and initiated a conversation that sought to explore the diversityof emerging practices of Irish and Irish based artists. The curatorial panel includedKaren McQuaid, curator at The Photographers Gallery, London; Michele Horrigan, artist and curator, Limerick; Ronan McCall, photographer and curator, Dublin;Pádraig Spillane and Pamela Condell, the curatorial team ‘Stag & Deer’, Cork; MoritzNeumüller and Ángel Luis González Fernández, from <strong>PhotoIreland</strong> <strong>Festival</strong>.The panel looked at the large number of works submitted to an open call, fromIreland and abroad. The process brought together a final cross-section of projectsfrom a set of excellent artists. New Irish Works celebrates their work as an excitingaddition to contemporary photography in Ireland. The range of work offered in New Irish Works demonstrates an evident criticalawareness of the medium, often questioning and engaging with its own limitations. While some practices are navigating around open-ended narratives, and ambiguity, others show a clear desire to both subscribe to and challenge a traditionaldocumentary practice. Irish photographers are also more frequently elaborating onthe interrelated complexities of global as well as local concerns and in turn there isa well-informed international influence perceptible in the works chosen.Planned as a multi-city experience, the exhibition divides the 25 projectsbetween seven venues in Dublin, Limerick, and Cork. In Dublin, The NationalPhotographic Archive, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, the Alliance Française, theGoethe Institut, the Instituto Cervantes. In Limerick, Ormston House, and in Cork,TACTIC. The exhibition is accompanied by a publication of the same title, kindlysponsored and printed by Castle Print, Galway.New Irish Works will be presented in Paris late in the year, to join key eventsprogrammed during Paris Photo, becoming a travelling exhibition that will bringfurther attention to photography in Ireland. The project has been made possible with the support of a considerable numberof partners, sponsors, and individuals, and we would like to thank everyone involvedfor their participation, energy, and dedication.New Irish Works is available for purchase at the National Photographic Archive, selected bookstores, and online at photoireland.org/shop12 13

The city as one giantsprawling suburb. Nothing LastsForever exists as the account ofan attempted description of theexperiencing of a hyper-mediatednow seemingly defined only bythat which J.G. Ballard describedas ‘a kaleidoscope of competingfictions’. Great changes areoccurring, History even. Butso slowly that it feels almostabstract and unreal. Absorbed, obscured and elsewhere.Barry W HughesMetastaticThe Conqueror (1956) directed by Dick Powel and starring John Wayne andSusan Hayward was shot on location at Snow Canyon State Park in Utah,USA during May-August of 1954. Snow Canyon is located 220 km downwindof Yucca Flats, Nevada where above ground atomic testing lasted from1951-1953. Encouraged by an article in the November 10, 1980 issue of Peoplemagazine, it was widely rumoured that the director, leading stars andninety-one of the crew died of cancer as a direct result of radiation falloutremaining in the area. However, contemporary and subsequent testing of thearea for any hazardous material and possible health risks have consistentlycontradicted the rumours, and data collected in the Snow Canyon area in Mayof 1954 indicated that the amount of radiation present was at backgroundlevels and therefore harmless.Metastatic follows the narrative of the film from opening shot to climaxand closing shot. Exploiting the camera and TV screen’s natural distortions ofcolour and pixilation, or visual noise, the resulting images seem to buzz withthe supposed radioactivity believed to have been present during the filming ofThe Conqueror. The title relates to both metastasis as a Greek word meaning‘displacement’ and a secondary cancerous growth formed by transmission ofcancerous cells from a primary growth located elsewhere in the body, as wellas the static electrical charges commonly associated with TV screens.Dragana JurisicYU: The Lost CountryOnce upon a time, in a farawaypart of Europe, behind sevenmountains and seven rivers, therewas a beautiful country calledYugoslavia. - Slavenka Drakulic.“There proceeds steadily fromthat place a stream of eventswhich are a source of danger tome,” wrote the Anglo-Irish writer,Rebecca West in 1937. Realizingthat it was “a calamity”, toknow nothing of an area “whichthreatened her safety” was sheembarked on a journey through“That place” –Yugoslavia. Theresult was Black Lamb and GreyFalcon. Initially intended as “asnap book” it spiralled into half amillion words, a portrait not justof Yugoslavia, but also of Europeon the brink of the Second WorldWar, and widely regarded as oneof the masterpieces of the20th century. Now, more than twentyyears after the war(s) started, Dragana Jurisic recalls and questions herown memories of both the place and the events that she experienced in thecountry of her birth.Rebecca West thought of art as a re-living of an experience. In retracingWest’s journey, Jurisic attempts to re-live her experience of Yugoslavia and tore-examine the conflicting emotions and memories of the country that “was”.This work deals with the search for lost identity for the citizens of this modernAtlantis, and the coming to terms with what came to pass in the “beautifulcountry called Yugoslavia”.Kevin GriffinOmey Island-Last Man StandingMeasuring approximately one square mile, Omey is a small tidal island situatedoff the west coast of County Galway, Ireland. Their sense of belonging and intimacy with thelandscape gave Brownlee a means of exploring a tranquillity that exists withinan often wild and windy place.16 17

New Irish WorksDublinRobert EllisNew LineThis body of work documents the space inhabited by a small alternativecommunity in the west of Ireland. By exploring the private world created by thepeople that live here through the harsh depths of winter and the warm fertilityof summer, this work seeks to engage with this place and its inhabitantsrather than expose it. The images tell the stories of the people that belonghere but only ever show a glimpse of their presence.Shannon GuerricoLibre et SauvageLibre et Sauvage is a revisiting of the Romantic fascination for an almightynature. It is however a constructed reality built from fantasies and nourishedby inspiration from literature and visual art that results in nature being utilisedas a decorative element.18 19

These raremoments of total engagement and acceptance seem to bring a subtlebalance of forces and meanings but also brings into question our need or wantfor improvement and change. For Stefania Sapio this conflict is reflected in herpersonal struggle to understand and apply advice relating to her daughters’learning abilities versus the desire allow them to live their lives the way theyare, valuing their very personal and unique outlook on reality.Shane LynamBanlieue de Paris, ContoursBanlieue de Paris, Contours is a study of the landscape that can be foundin the banlieue of Paris. Drawing on the feeling of social optimism that waspresent in the area from the 1920s through to the building of the périphériquemotorway in 1958, Shane Lynam has sought to recreate a fictional green beltaround the city. By looking at how a selection of ‘natural’ spaces are used, heinvestigates what remains of the original vision, the reality of the area todayand suggests how the area might look today if things had playedout differently. In association withthe Istituto Italiano di Cultura DublinIn association withthe Alliance Française Dublin20 21

Life comes toa standstill so to speak, frozen in time, unable to move forward, not knowingwhere to go from here. One coping mechanism is to tend towards creatingorder in our surroundings. However, the unpredictability of nature repeatedlyundermines our attempts to control it. For the most part, we see the worldnot as it is but as we’d like it to be. That any moment now, things may changeis an optimistic outlook that is held by many to help maintain ones sanitythrough uncertain times.Paul GaffneyWe Make the Path by WalkingOver the past year Paul Gaffney has walked over 3,500 kilometres throughoutSpain, Portugal and the south of France, with the aim of creating a bodyof work which explores the subject of long distance walking as a means ofmeditation and personal transformation.Gaffneys’ intention has been to capture the essence of what has turnedout to be quite a spiritual journey, in a series of images that express theexperience of being immersed in nature and communicate a sense of thesubtle internal and psychological changes that one may undergo whilenegotiating the landscape. In association withthe Goethe Institut DublinIn association withthe Instituto Cervantes Dublin22 23

New Irish WorksLimerickOrmston House4–27 Jul / Wed–Sat 12–6pmOpening: 7pm Wed 3 JulClaudi NirA Temporary DiscomfortProduced over a period of four years, A Temporary Discomfort deals withthe idea of a once familiar place becoming unfamiliar and the emotionsthat are triggered when the place once called home is not recognizableas such anymore after spending a significant amount of time abroad.Sensory overload, disorientation, resistance, confusion, flawed memories, frustration, withdrawal, resentment, boredom, restlessness, alienation, need for excessive sleep. These are symptoms typically associated withreverse culture shock, a phenomenon experienced when returning to one’shome culture after growing accustomed to a new one.Imagine, you are in the city of your birth, where you grew up and spentmost of your life – though everything feels different – the static, mental andemotional snapshot of home has been replaced by an alternate reality.Caroline McNallyEarth is Room EnoughThe project examines our culture of consumption through the documentationof a site that is integral to, but in the background of our daily existence: thelandfill. These unusual landscapes, with tens of feet of rubbish hidden fromview, act as a metaphor for how our society seeks to bury our problems andavoid addressing the deeper costs of the way we live. The alteration of colours, inspired by science-fiction representations of dystopian futures (in particularHG Wells, The Time Machine), seeks to augment the unfamiliarity of thesesites and underscore the degree to which western consumers are estrangedfrom the innumerable and immensely destructive repercussions that ourconsumption has at both ends of the production-disposal stream.24 25

Subsequently, mobility, displacement and transculturalism areinseparable characteristics of contemporary society. Migracijos explores aspectsof migratory culture and in particular the ways in which displacement affects andtransforms the lives of migrants. It questions what is lost and what is gained in theprocess of transition between leaving home and settling in the host country.Ieva Baltaduonyte addresses these issues through a dialogue with Lithuanianwomen representing two generations who came to live in Ireland during the ‘CelticTiger’ years. The resulting ‘conversations’ reveal intimate intercultural complexities. These personal narratives speak of the in-between place where language andnotions of home and can no longer be defined as fixed entities.26 27

New Irish WorksLimerickMiriam O’ ConnorAttention SeekersWe spend much of our daily lives caught up in busy routines; unobservant of thecurious details that make up the visual world we are passing through. AttentionSeekers is a body of work that lingers on these often overlooked traces, singlingthem out with an attentive and subtle gaze that imbues them with a mysteriousand magical vitality. The subjects of these images solicit attention – that of thephotographer and, ultimately, of the viewer – with their strangely insistent and oftensubtly unsettling juxtapositions, shapes and colours.Modest or minute elements are reoccurring motifs across the series, where, time, location and horizon lines are regularly obscured - comparatively hazy. Full ofambiguous clues and mischievous suggestions, the images represent, above all, adeep curiosity around looking and seeing, and a preoccupation with the impressionthat these scenes in some way return the gaze.Roseanne LynchPlaceThere is stillness within movement, the breath in between, while light defines theplanes of a space. This series seeks to create work that has the capacity to quieten,if not silence, the viewing experience and in doing so, open up a space for internalconversation.28 29

New Irish WorksCorkTACTIC5-27 Jul / Mon-Sat 12–6pm / Sun ClosedOpening: 6pm Fri 5 JulDavid Thomas SmithAnthropoceneAnthropocene examines global landscapes that have been transformed by theactions and activities of humanity.David Thomas Smith has created these images using a unique and innovativetechnique. Each image is composited from thousands and thousands of thumbnailsextracted as screen grabs from Google Maps, which are then reconstructed pieceby piece using Photoshop to produce incredibly detailed images. Anthropoceneitself reflects upon the complex structures that make up the centres of globalcapitalism, transforming the aerial landscapes of sites associated with industriessuch as oil, precious metals, consumer culture, information and excess. Thousandsof seemingly insignificant coded pieces of information are sewn together like knotsin a rug to reveal a grander spectacle.Questions of photographic and economic realities are further complicatedthrough the formal use of patterns that have their origins in the ancientcivilizations of Persia. This work draws upon the patterns and motifs used by Persianrug makers and as well as the Afghani tradition of recording experiences throughvivid, woven images of the war-torn land that surrounds them.Mandy O’NeillEvery Second FridayEvery Second Friday is a documentation of the intense period of time that is spentby Mandy O’Neill, her partner and his daughter. With time being short, there isthe sense that these weekends must be filled with activity and fun and while thisdoes not necessitate anything particularly special, the everyday takes on a newsignificance. In this personal reflection on the idea and experience of the ‘familyouting’, nondescript spaces become alien forests, fairy-mountains or castles andfavourite toys and objects take up temporary residence. The work is personal innature, but from a broader perspective it examines the complexities of the modernfamily, and also references a wider collective memory of childhood.30 31

This series expresses anuncomfortable balancing act between the longing to connect-or reconnect- withthe land and an ever-unfolding sense of separation.Patrick Hogan,StillCreated over two years while living in a remote part of Ireland, Still presents PatrickHogan’s attempts to integrate his experience of the world around him with hisphotographic expression. These images provide a record of his encounter withpeople, relationships, objects, food, beauty, nature, death and decay. His pictureinstallations are characterized by a strong visceral mix of playfulness and unease, allowing space to meditate on the process and effort of living. What one finds inthis work is not simply a story about the author’s life, but evidence of a deeper andongoing engagement with broader questions: What is the fundamental nature ofliving? What are the limits of ‘still’ photography as a form of sensory expression?32 33

New Irish WorksCorkYvette MonahanThe Time of Dreaming the World AwakeThe Time of Dreaming the World Awake is a portrait of a place, a landscape ofpossibility. This body of work is based in a small region in Southern France. It centres onthe story of Bugarach, the ‘magic’ mountain connected to a Mayan prophecywhich indicated that the world as we know it, would end on December 21st, 2012.The prophecy claimed that this date would mark the beginning of a new era forhumanity; a new and sublime future and some believed that Bugarach was to bethe first bastion of this modern Arcadia. For Yvette Monahan his sense of possibilityand palpable charge allowed an allegorical landscape full of portents to exist, onethat was beyond the visual reality.Maurice GunningEncuentro, Argentine Irish DiasporaDrawing on letters from the 1860’s, sent by Irish emigrants to Argentina,Maurice Gunning created a profound visual exploration of contemporary lifeof the Argentine Irish Diaspora. An Uncertain StateGallery of Photography, Dublin.21 Jun–11 Aug / Tue–Sat 11–6pm, Sun 1–6pmHow is photography responding to the crisis? An Uncertain State looks at howphotographic artists are representing this period of austerity and uncertaintyin Ireland. Their work addresses important issues at the heart of where we arenow: contested and hidden histories, effects of the global financial crisis and theradically altered social and physical landscapes. The ten artists in An UncertainState go beyond surface readings to reflect the emerging concerns in postceltic tiger Ireland: the treatment of asylum seekers; institutional abuse; sexualabuse; emigration; the legacy of the property crash; identity; disadvantage andmarginalisation; and the legacy of conflict. An Uncertain State is not a definitive survey – the work on show presents abrief insight into the broad range of photographic responses to where we are nowin Ireland. First shown to critical acclaimat dOCUMENTA 13, this site-specific film installation draws on the possibilities oflost and forgotten narratives located somewhere between recent history and a nearfuture. Shot on location in and around Kassel, Germany, the powerful narrative attimes presents echoes of Doherty’s previous work Ghost Story, 2007, pulling personalhistories and experience to the foreground of the Kassel landscape. This samelandscape served as the backdrop of much of the folklore collected by the BrothersGrimm while they lived and worked in Kassel. Secretion is a new direction for theartist and attempts to engage, not only with the landscape as it looks today, butalso as a repository of the memories of past experiences and our apprehensionabout the future. The Artist’s Eye:Photographic Portraits of ArtistsCruel And Unusual29 Mar–7 Jul / Tue–Sat 10am–5pm / Sun 2–5pm / Mon ClosedThe Artist’s Eye presents photographic portraits of artists working, relaxing, andsometimes deliberately posturing for the camera. It is an opportunity to see intothe intimacy of the studio environment as many artists are depicted in the dynamicand personal creation of the work of art. We glimpse the surrealist Max Ernstsmoking in an ornate chair, the neatly arranged ceramics of Pablo Picasso and theintense performances of Joseph Beuys. The Artist’s Eye is produced in partnershipwith the Galleria Civica di Modena, Italy, and features over eighty artworks drawnfrom their extensive collection which includes both historic and contemporaryphotographic images. From August Sander’s 19th century documents of the artist as a professionalworker, to the knowingly dramatic stance of Salvador Dali, and from the iconicpicture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in bed together to the thoughtful selfportraitsof Francesca Woodman and Elina Brotherus, The Artist’s Eye will give Irishaudiences an insight into the many ways in which artists create their artworks, anddevelop an artistic persona.Sirius Arts Centre13 June – 7 JulWed–Fri 11am–1pm & 2pm–5pm / Sat–Sun 2pm–5pm / Mon–Tues ClosedReception with talk by Co-Curator Hester Keijser on Sat 22 Jun / 2pm – Admission FreeWorldwide, prisons are ‘home’ to more than 9 million people, and their numbers will onlyincrease over the coming decades. The booktells the story of a man who discovers late in life that as a child he hadbeen brought to England to escape the Nazis. The novel traces his effortsto discover the fate of his parents and to understand his lost past. This film explores the book by visiting a number of the locations in whichit is set. The photographs that illustrate the book are in many casesapparently documentary pictures but seemingly conceal as much as theyreveal. Do they actually depict buildings and object at those locations orare they an invention of the author? And if they are what they appear tobe, do they have relevance to the story beyond what is described in thetext?Including interviews with friends and colleagues of Sebald this film is anexploration of one of the most fascinating works of both photography andliterature published in recent decades.Film premier to coincide with the new issue of Source magazine, themed onPhotography and Literature, this event also also launches a series of newfilms on this subject.76 77
