DearFriendsWe hope that by the time you receive this spring/summer issueof NSMCGiving that our cool spring will have finally given wayto full-blown summer and all it encompasses on Boston’sNorth Shore. For thousands of our patients, their families andneighbors, it is nearly time for that rite of early summer uniqueto Salem—the North Shore Cancer WALK. The 23rd WALKwill take place on June 23rd and we are deeply honored tohave Jude Toner and Phyllis Sagan of Sagan Realtors as ourWALK Chairs.Just as the WALK continues to help us to ensure that weprovide the very best in cancer care, our physicians areconstantly exploring how they can continue to meet thevarying needs of each of their patients. You should find thearticle about the MDVIP Program of great interest as this is being offered by North ShorePhysicians Group as a model program that offers significantly greater time and access forpatients with their primary care physician. We are pleased that longtime donors (and previously trustee and volunteer) Wes andGinnie Eaton allowed us to share their story about a recent and generous gift annuity toNSMC Salem Hospital. Planned gifts are critical to the Medical Center since they perpetuatethe lifetime legacy of our donors.Speaking of donors, this issue contains our annual lists of contributors, reflecting leadershipgiving for a variety of purposes as well as a list of corporate sponsors for the Cancer WALK.It would be impossible to continue the work we do each and every day in bringing thebest care possible to residents of the North Shore without your support. On behalf of everyonewho has been touched by North Shore Medical Center over the past year, thank you for yoursupport. nsmcGiving | Spring 2013A HEALTHY INVESTMENTPROGRAM OFFERS A MORE PERSONALIZEDAPPROACH TO PRIMARY CAREERIC CHECKOWAY of North Andoverhas a long history with his primary carephysician, Maurice Greenbaum, M.D.,which dates back to when he was a highschool student living in Newburyport.Over the years, the two have built whathe describes as a “close and collaborativeworking relationship,” and he considersDr. Greenbaum to be a trusted healthadvisor and advocate. So, whenDr. Greenbaum became affiliated withNorth Shore Physicians Group’s (NSPG)new MDVIP Program, he didn’t thinktwice about signing up.Introduced by NSPG last year, the MDVIPProgram is a new approach to primary carethat offers patients more time with theirThe MDVIP Program offersEric Checkoway of NorthAndover the opportunity tomore proactively managehis health and wellnesswith his long-time primarycare physician MauriceGreenbaum, M.D.“I’ve always had a solid relationship withDr. Greenbaum, but now I get to spend evenmore time with him during my visits discussinghow to achieve my health and wellness goals.”— ERIC CHECKOWAYprimary care physician and a morecomprehensive plan for achieving theirhealth and wellness goals. Patients who paya $1,500 annual membership fee enjoy anenhanced level of service, which includessame-day appointments and 24/7 access totheir physician by email or cell phone.Patient appointments run no less than 30minutes and often last an hour so thatpatients can discuss their medical concernsin more detail. An extensive annual physicalthat includes comprehensive testing and thecreation of a personalized wellness plan arealso included in the program.“The MDVIP Program offers me aproactive way to manage my health,”says Checkoway, 46, a managing directorat an international technology companybased in Peabody and father of twoyoung daughters. “I’ve always had a solidrelationship with Dr. Greenbaum, but nowI get to spend even more time with himduring my visits discussing how to achievemy health and wellness goals. It’s a levelof personalized, one-on-one attentionthat really makes me feel like I’m hisonly patient.”When he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkinslymphoma last year, Checkoway also learnedhow valuable that extra level of attentioncan be during a health crisis. “Not onlydid Dr. Greenbaum help nail down mydiagnosis, he was also there quarterbackingmy care during treatment and recovery,”says Checkoway. “He was in regularcommunication with my wife and me andall the other doctors involved. It was greathaving that kind of support from someonewho really knows my history.”“The extra time that Dr. Minor spends with meduring my visits means that we have more thanjust a superficial relationship—she really knowsme as a person.”Bonnie Polan, 60, of Danvers shares asimilar sentiment for Brenda Minor, M.D.,her NSPG primary care physician for morethan a decade. Herself a two-time cancersurvivor, Polan was among the first to jointhe MDVIP Program when it was startedlast year. “I see this program as an investmentin my health,” says Polan, a professor atseveral area colleges and mother of twogrown children. “The extra time thatDr. Minor spends with me during myvisits means that we have more than just asuperficial relationship—she really knowsme as a person. I also like that I can reachher at any time if I have a concern. I’veemailed her several times on weekends andshe always gets right back to me.”The benefits of the concierge-style practiceextend to the physicians as well. “I hadthought about retiring and scaling back abit, but now I can focus on providing caremore thoroughly to a smaller numberof patients,” says Dr. Minor. “It’s veryinvigorating at this point in my career tobe able to invest so much time withmy patients.”The lighter patient load leaves her more timeto organize wellness events and lectures onnutrition, complementary therapies, yogaand other exercise options.“By practicing medicine this way, we asphysicians really get to know our patientsmore broadly,” adds Dr. Greenbaum. “Wegain a deeper understanding of their entirehealth history and can look at things in amore holistic and preventative fashion.”To learn more about the benefits of NSPG’s concierge medicinepractices, or to make an appointment, please contact:Maurice Greenbaum, M.D.55 Highland AvenueSalem, MA978-741-1644Brenda Minor, M.D.1 Hutchinson DriveNSMC Women’s CenterDanvers, MA978-774-7171Thanks to the MDVIPProgram, Bonnie Polan ofDanvers feels a deeperconnection to her primarycare physician, BrendaMinor, M.D.— BONNIE POLANJohn Szymanski, M.D.331 Highland AvenueSalem, MA978-745-1200COMPREHENSIVECARE WITH APERSONAL TOUCHThe MDVIP Program is an optionalapproach to healthcare that offerspatients more time with their primarycare physician and a morecomprehensive plan for achievingtheir health and wellness goals.
