In 1943, at agenineteen, Beale volunteered as an <strong>AFS</strong>ambulance driver with the British NinthArmy in Syria and then the Fifth Armyin Italy until his repatriation in February1944. Following the war, he completedhis studies at Harvard University, and in1947 he received a master’s degree inMusic from Yale University. Beale laterjoined the faculty of the School of Musicat the University of Washington andbecame a Composer in Residence atCarnegie Mellon University as well as amember of the American ComposersAlliance of New York City. Jamesis survived by his wife, Jane, threedaughters, four grandchildren and twogreat-grandsons.Robert F.SkillingsCM 41Robert Fraser Skillings passed awayon June 28, 2011, in Brunswick, ME.He was born on December 17, 1922,in Middlebury, VT. He put his studieson hold at Oberlin College in orderto volunteer his services as an <strong>AFS</strong>Ambulance Driver in the Italiancampaign from April 1943 until hisrepatriation in July 1945. His experienceduring the war inspired in him aninterest in international affairs, and heconsequently worked at the WorldBank for forty years until his retirementin 1987. Skillings was predeceased byhis wife, Sally, in 2009. He is survived byhis three children, three grandchildren,one niece and two nephews.<strong>AFS</strong> JANUS • FALL 2011 • 10
