<strong>AFS</strong> WWII Ambulance DriversLast PostDavid A.Haller, Jr.IB 54Robert H.McCullochCM 43PeterMinnock-StewartIB 1, IB 45David Alexander Haller, Jr. passedaway on February 1, 2011, in Hyannis,MA. He was born on October 14,1923, in Rochester, NY. Haller wassent overseas as an <strong>AFS</strong> ambulancedriver in March 1945, where heserved in the Burma Campaignuntil his repatriation in Novemberof that same year. He graduatedfrom the University of Rochesterin 1948 and later worked for theLoomis Institute in Windsor, CT.He was an active member of theChatham Conservation Foundation inMassachusetts. Haller is survived bytwo nephews and a cousin.Peter E.SloaneME 32Robert Hathorn McCulloch passedaway on April 14, 2011. He was bornin Evanston, IL on April 27, 1924.He volunteered with <strong>AFS</strong> duringWorld War II in Syria, Lebanonand Italy, until his repatriation onSeptember 3, 1944. He attendedDenison University as a member ofthe Phi Gamma Delta fraternity andgraduated in 1947 with a degree ineconomics. McCulloch worked as asales representative for AmericanHospital Supply for twenty-five yearsand later became a member of theFirst Presbyterian Church in Granville,OH. McCulloch was predeceased byhis wife, Patricia, and his brothers,Hugh and Bruce. He is survived byfive nephews and four nieces.BulkeleySmith, Jr.ME 16, FFC, FR 1Peter F. Minnock-Stewart passed awayon November 1, 2011, in New Jerseyat the age of 87. Minnock-Stewartvolunteered with <strong>AFS</strong> in 1943 as partof the first unit serving with the BritishSoutheast Asia Command in Burma.After completion of his <strong>AFS</strong> service,he became the only known Americanto be commissioned as an officer inthe Indian Army Intelligence Corps.After resigning as a Lt. Colonel in 1946,Minnock-Stewart graduated from theUniversity of Virginia and worked for theFord Motor Company, several marketingand advertising agencies and IntellecticsSMB Corp. He is survived by his wife,Mary Ellen Dougherty, his daughter, son,son-in-law, granddaughter, brother andsister-in-law.EugeneVasilewME 32Peter Edison Sloane, grandsonof inventor Thomas Alva Edison,passed away on November 28, 2010.He was born on March 2, 1923, inOrange, NJ. Sloane was educated atthe Montclair Academy and PhillipsExeter Academy and attended YaleUniversity. Sloane volunteered as anambulance driver with <strong>AFS</strong> duringWorld War II and served in the Africanand Italian Campaigns before hisrepatriation on November 17, 1944.Sloane was placed on record forbeing mentioned in a Despatch fordistinguished service by the BritishSecretary of State for War for hisservices in World War II.Bulkeley Smith, Jr. passed away onJune 11, 2010, in Connecticut. He wasborn on March 11, 1921, in Worcester,MA. Smith postponed his studiesat Yale University to volunteer asan <strong>AFS</strong> Ambulance Driver with theFree French, attached to the BritishEighth Army, from December 1942,and from February 20, 1943, throughMay 1, 1943. He obtained a doctoratein Sociology and later joined thefaculty at Mt. Holyoke College,where he rose to become chairmanof the Sociology Department. Smithis survived by his wife, Helen, hisdaughter, two granddaughters, abrother and a nephew.Eugene Vasilew passed away on June12, 2011, in Summerville, SC, at age89. Vasilew volunteered with <strong>AFS</strong> inthe Western Desert and Italy beforehis repatriation in September 1944.He received his M.A. from the StateUniversity of Iowa and his Ph.D. fromOhio State University. Vasilew taughtat Lehigh University and BinghamtonUniversity, where he established therhetoric program, developed the firstaccredited course in Black Powerand Civil Rights, and organized thefirst Vietnam War protest “sit-in” oncampus. Vasilew is survived by his wife,two sons, one daughter, two daughtersin-lawand two grandchildren.<strong>AFS</strong> JANUS • FALL 2011 • 11
