Emotional / Psychological CausesMost men will on occasion have difficulty getting or maintainingan erection. It is usually the result of stress, worry, tiredness orexcessive alcohol consumption. Sometimes worrying about thiscan become a vicious circle, causing erectile problems andperformance anxiety.While most cases of ED are physical, all ED will have apsychological component perhaps due to worry. In somecases the psychological components can be the main cause.For example:• Stress and anxiety from work or home (money or family)• Marital rows and dissatisfaction• (as can also occur with premature ejaculation)• Depression• Sexual boredom• Worries about your sexual orientationED develops quite suddenly if it is a symptom of a mental healthproblem. The ED may resolve when your mental state improves,e.g. if your anxiety or depression eases. However, some peoplebecome even more anxious or depressed when they develop ED,e.g. they may not realise it is a reaction to their mental healthproblem. This can make matters worse and lead to a vicious circleof worsening anxiety and persisting ED.
erectile dysfunction (ED)As a rule, a psychological cause is more likely if there are timeswhen you can get a good erection, e.g. on waking, erectionsduring the night or through masturbation, even if most of the timeyou can’t.Treatments available include:• Psychosexual Counselling• Cognitive Behavioural Therapy• Medical Treatment such as changes to current medication or• starting new medication e.g. Cialis, Viagra, Levitria• Surgical: Implants, Penile StraighteningMedication and other substances that can cause EDSome of the drugs required for the treatment of some longterm / chronic conditions may have the side effect of causingED.
