ARTICLESAce up Your SleeveAs the year passes by, there will be those who can say, “This yearI really did my best”, some vow, “next year for sure I will reallystruggle hard”, and many are left with a feeling of dejection fornot being able to accomplish all they hoped to. The appraisal ofeach person varies.Despite all upheavals and shortcomings, life is interestingbecause all kinds of things happen and we dream high. So theneed is to desire and get what you want and achieve what youare after.“If you wish in this world to advanceYour merits you're bound to enhance; And must stir it and stump it,And blow your own trumpet,Or, trust me, you haven't a chance.”In order to achieve success, you have to change your attitude, broaden your vision, widen your horizon, enrich your mind andensure success in every twist and turn of life. You must put yourthoughts into actions, so that your ideas can come true to placeyou in a coveted position. Every obstacle shall strengthen yourwill and lead you to success.“Sooner or later the man who wins is the man who thinks hecan”.Positive thinking and self-discipline lay strong foundation foryour success. Positive thinking imbibes in your confidence andenthusiasm. It enables you to visualize positive goals anddefinite objectives and fills you with vigor to work with patienceand perseverance towards your goal. But without masteringself-discipline, other tasks cannot be mastered.A Jaipur foot could not deter Sudha Chandaran fromperformance. He is up and doing.”ABHINAV LAKHIANIIT III YearStory of TerrorismA terrorist is a person who creates fear and panic among theorganization to which he belongs. Terrorism usually is of twokinds. There is political terrorism which seeks to achieve itspolitical end by creating fear and panic on a large scale. There isalso criminal terrorism which indulges in kidnappings in order toextort huge amounts by way of ransom. Political terrorism ismore dangerous and its consequences can be disastrous.Political terrorists are well organized and well-trained. It oftenbecomes difficult for the law enforcing agencies to arrest themin time. They indulge in senseless violence on a large scale inorder to intimidate the people and the government. Hijacking ofaero-planes, arsenals, robberies, murder of eminentpersonalities, shooting down of innocent peopleindiscriminately, use of transistor bombs and other explosives, spreading of rumors’ etc. are the various devices used byterrorist organizations in order to achieve their political ends.Terrorists constantly change their hide-outs and their tactics inorder to escape arrest and punishment. When arrested, they tryto commit suicide or are killed by their own close associates. They may think that they are patriots, but in reality they are antisocialor criminal elements who are being exploited by cleverpoliticians to achieve their own ends.Terrorists are usually young, while the brains behind them areold, seasoned politicians who co-ordinate and guide theiractivities. They are fanatics and extremists who act with greatfervor and zeal. But studies reveal that if apprehended alive, aterrorist loses his fervor as quickly as he had acquired it. Whenhe has time to think, he feels he is stupid or misled. We have todisabuse our minds that terrorists who belong to the politicalclass are patriots. All international studies consign them to thecategory of murderers, rapists or highway robbers. Terrorismhas no place in a democracy which is based on the belief that allproblems can be solved through negotiations. Government canalso be changed through the ballot box.Terrorism is a world-wide problem. It is there in the middle-eastand in most countries of Europe. Very often it is seen thatterrorist groups receive money, weapons, training andguidance, from other countries and this enables them to attaina high level of performance. In the case of the Punjab terrorists, there were no doubt they were receiving training, weapons, sanctuary and other forms of material assistance from Pakistan. It was not an easy job to seal the long border completely andprevent flow of arms to the terrorists, but through strong anddetermined steps, thus terrorists are completely flushed outand peace is restored in Punjab. For dealing with these terrorists, the government had to armitself with greater powers. The anti-terrorist act passed by theparliament provides for deterrent punishment for terrorist acts. The act also provides punishment for "disruptive activities"which have been defined as any action taken to disrupt the45

ARTICLESsovereignty or the territorial integrity of the nation. Earlier, theparliament passed laws amending the arms act to curbunauthorized access to arms and ammunition. The act liesdown that possession of unlicensed or unauthorized arms indisturbed areas will entail a minimum punishment ofimprisonment for a period of three years. The minimumpunishment earlier provided in the act was merely six months. The national police commission, in its report, had rightlyadvocated the enactment of a new arms act to provide forstricter conditions for the issue of licenses and enhancedresponsibilities on the part of the licenses for security andaccountability of ammunition. Laws have also been enacted toprohibit the use of religious places for political purposes or forhiding and sheltering anti-social elements. Stringentpunishment is to be meted out in case of misuse of a religiousplace. The series of bomb blasts in Delhi and neighboring states andspate of murders of eminent personalities show how difficult itis to curb terrorist activities. The Punjab terrorists were anorganized group working to achieve 'Khalistan' or a separateSikh state under the guidance and inspiration of late SantBhinderawale and others like him. After "operation blue star” itwas hoped that the extremist activities in Punjab would besuccessfully encountered, as it was through that without aprotected sanctuary it would become difficult for the extremiststo carry on their acts of sabotage and violence. However theassassination of late Mrs. Indira Gandhi was the directconsequence of "operation blue star". After the "operation bluestar" the terrorists again re-grouped and entrenchedthemselves in the golden temple. However "the operation blackthunder" was a complete success and terrorists and anti-socialelements were flushed out. The sanctity of the golden templewas restored again.Terrorism could not, and it cannot, be curbed by the lawenforcing agencies alone. It was the tact, prudence and sagacityof the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sant Longowalwhich, after protracted negotiations, resulted in the historicPunjab accord which not only gave a knockout blow to terrorismbut also saved the nation from disintegration. No doubt, theSant paid for it with his life, but it ushered in an era ofcooperation instead of confrontation in Punjab and Kashmir. However, elections have been held successfully in the state, anda popularly elected chief minister is now at the helm of affair. The terrorists have lost the sympathy and co-operation ofpeople and isolated. Let us hope that the country would beentirely free from this menace soon.CHANDAN REVARYCSE-A IV Year46A Medley of MemoriesMemories of my school days bring out the widest smile on myface. My school was not just an educational institute made up ofbricks and concrete, but it's about building character, enrichingminds and about experiences that last for lifetime. The wonderful journey began when I stepped into the school asa kindergarten student. ARTICLESMy Experience - Before and After COMMONWEALTH GAMES‘PM gives ultimatum to the preparation team of CWG’'CWG Sports Village found in a mess’'CWG Fame or Shame for India’All these news headlines bewildered me every day before theCommon Wealth games actually got started. It was unusual tosee that the government of India was facing difficulties inorganizing a worldwide event in its capital. Our national imagewas hit badly during preparation for the games. Almost everymedia house was covering minute happening at the games andespecially the mishaps laid the emphasis of every discussion.Almost all the efforts were in vain due to many factors.Inefficient labor, corruption and most importantly rain were theroot causes of all these problems. Although being a proudDelhite, I was very excited to get a glimpse of the games. Delhiwas preparing for CWG for 4yrs and everyone was desperatelylooking forward to attend the games.Media was more excited than anyone else. Every news flashshowed Delhi's inability to carry out CWG. Suresh Kalmadi, asenior sports administrator and also the man behind the CWGdid not say a word in regard to media's humiliation. On the otherside, Sydney was also preparing for the games, doubting Delhi'spotential.I was really waiting for the games to begin. My anxiousnessended on 3rd Oct'10 when the Opening ceremony for CWG washeld in Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. I hooked to my television setto see the enthusiasm of CWG. I didn't know that my countryhad so much of diversity. It was amazing to see beautifulcombinations of so many cultural dances and music. It wassymphony of dozens of kinds of drums, Tablas, percussions, flutes and pipes sounded amidst the spectators of over 60,000audiences in Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium. The event was beingwatched by over 3 Billion people across the globe on television.I was awestruck at the effortless amalgamation of differenttypes of music, dance and songs. And that's the beauty of Indianculture. I am sure this is unity in diversity, as described by theworld. I have been hearing and seeing lot of negative thingsabout CWG but the Opening Ceremony was a slap on the media. And finally the Common Wealth Games started with a grandopening. I was overwhelmed after watching the vibrant showand so I decided to watch the games too.I went to see the semi final of Hockey (Women Team).I got thetickets easily. I was very curious to see a stadium as I have neverbeen to one. The match was between India and Canada. While Iwas passing through 2-3 layers of security check (lost Rs. 6worth coin as coins were not allowed inside stadium), therewere huge roar coming out from stadium. I entered the DhyanChand Stadium and I was amazed to see the packed audiencethere.48The audience was very energetic and encouraging for the Indianteam. India won the match by 3-0. It was a moment of pride forevery Indian sitting there. The crowd gave a huge cheer forIndia. India got 101 medals in total in CWG that included 38Gold, 27 Silver and 36 Bronze medals. Saina Nehwal, VijendreKumar, Sushil Kumar, Anil Kumar & Abhinav Bindra were thefaces that bought Lawrence to our country. The games celebrated the Closing Ceremony on 14th Oct'10. Ifthe Aerostat was the star of the opening ceremony then thehonor belonged to the dancing laser lights at the grand finale ofthe games. The lights created a supernatural beauty that wasunbelievable. The closing ceremony was a big hit too and thus the CWG cameto an end and it bought the whole ambience of Delhi as the mostbeautiful city of the world for those 15days. I love my Delhi andmore over I LOVE MY INDIA. JAI HIND.!YATIKA GIRDHARIT, III Year'AMBITION' is the Greatest Enemy of PeacePetrarch rightly said, 'The five enemies of peace are greed, ambition, anger, envy and pride.” He also added, “If these wereto be banished, we would enjoy perpetual peace. If Hitler's ambition of conquering the whole of Europe had nothindered the path of peace, there would not have been WorldWar II. Nowadays everyone has an ambition, and to achievethat, one can cross all limits. Let it be a theft or a murder. A mandoesn't want to be prominent, but then he is afraid that anotherone would be. It is this desire to put him down that destroyspeace.Men are afraid that if they go fast, then others may go faster.Their ambition is directed in making the others go slower whichagain leads to the elimination of peace between them.'Greed' is the mother of ambition. The reason why everyone hasan ambition is that they want to gain something or other. Indiaand Pakistan have been rivals since 1947 over the Kashmir issue. And the consequences were hostility. They were in a state ofbrutal war three times which resulted in many innocent deathsand harm to the economy of both the countries.Revenge is also fundamental in giving rise to ambition. Historystands witness to this, most of the battles in the past werefought for revenge. The word 'Ambition' conjures in our mindvisions of battles, bloodshed and conquest by force. It may bringfamous victories and triumphs, but for the betterment ofhuman race and peace in civilization of the world these victoriesare hollow. The biggest ambition is to be the mightiest. Saddam Hussein'sforemost ambition was to make Iraq the supreme power, and todo so he used unfair means. And the outcome as everyoneknows was that after so many innocent deaths, he was alsocaptured and killed and Iraq was almost destroyed.

ARTICLESIf ambition takes wings, reputation falls to pieces. In otherwords, a man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of illconsideredaction due to his ambition. But all this doesn't meanthat one should not have an ambition at all. 'Yes', one should beambitious but not to the extent that it becomes a hindrance inthe way to peace and a cause for other's downfall. In the end I would conclude by writing, “The real dignity of aman lies not in what he has, but in what he is.”This implies that an ambitious person may find himself withoutfriends, homeless and devoid of fortune. For the friendless man,the attainment of wealth, power, and honour is of little value.Further when we do our duty in spite of ambition andtemptation, the mental satisfaction is heightened by the praiseof the people around us and our conscience. The ambitious manstands alone, exposed to his enemies and to the blows ofmisfortune. But a man who seeks peace is provided with astrong defence against the worst that fortune can do to him.AASTHA CHITTORIAIT III YearTrials and Errors are the Pillars of SuccessIn life, failure is unavoidable--in fact, an essential aspect ofliving. Given, you have to live with failure as part and parcel oflife; you might as well let your failure transform your life, insteadof letting it ruin your life. In this world, everybody wantssuccess, not failure, and everybody is striving to succeed, to win;indeed, to many, life is all about winning, not losing. As a matterof fact, many of us think that if we don't win, we lose, and that ifwe don't get what we want (not what we need) from life, wehave failed ourselves miserably. But this is not what life is allabout. Life is about living out your experience--whether it isyour success or failure--to find out who you are, and what youneed, and thus transforming yourself as you plod along thearduous life journey. Life is not about winning or losing: it isabout how you experience what life has to offer. In life, as ineverything else, failure and success are not black and white:they often blend into a continual flow of changing experience.Fortunately or unfortunately, our society is saturated withbooks and instructional tools on self-improvement, and pursuitof success and happiness. We have all the weapons madeavailable to us to fight failure and to guarantee success. Yet, weall fail one way or another. Because of the abundant resourcesavailable to fight failure, when we fail, we become less forgivingof our failure or of ourselves. The rampancy of mentaldepression is a strong testament to the inability to accept failurein our society. All in all, to survive, we must learn coping with failure in ourlives--this holds the key to the art of living well. Coping withfailure understands the notion of failure itself. Did we really fail?Or have we failed only to reach our too idealistic and unrealisticgoals? Why did we fail? Was our failure due to circumstances, lack of effort, or simply doing all the wrong things?Understanding the nature of our failure is enlightening andilluminating. Coping with failure means coming to terms withthe notion that we have failed, and yet we "should" not allowourselves to fail again.Positive thinking, ironically enough, may only numb or mask ourfeelings of disappointment and disillusionment. We may alsouse other different strategies to distract our disappointment, such as binge eating on comfort food, taking drugs or alcohol, going on a shopping spree, or blaming ourselves and others forour failure. These strategies may or may not work for us.Ultimately, we may come to believe that we have failedourselves in one way or another.Do not be let down by any failure in your life. Instead, let yourfailure transform your life. This transformation means changingyour perception of winning and your ego self. In life, we oftenassociate birth with happiness and success, and death withsadness and failure. Transformation means your realization thatlife is a series of cycles of birth and death--or rather of successand failure. Once you grasp the significance of success andfailure in human life, you may have a different perspective ofyour own failure, and may even learn the art of coping withfailure. Transformation means embracing both success andfailure--and not just welcoming success and rejecting failure. In Christianity, it is through human failure that we appreciateour dependence on God: "My grace is sufficient for you, for mypower is made perfect in weakness." (2 Corinthians 12:9); inBuddhism, it is through human failure that we are awakened tothe futility of our craving for success.Yes, failure can transform you in a positive way if you perceiveand comprehend its true nature.ANKIT BIALACSE II Year49
