22FELLOWSHIP/ SCHOLARSHIP/ STUDENTS AID FUNDJunior Research Fellowship (JRF) are open to persons who are below the age of30 years (relaxable by years for SC/ST candidates) and have obtained a Master’sdegree of a recognised University securing a minimum of 55% marks and havequalified in the National Eligibility Test (NET). UGC may also award fellowshipsto research scholars who may not have cleared NET. A few NEHU Post-graduateScholarships are available to meritorious students who have passed their Honoursdegree examinations securing a minimum of 55% marks and are pursuing theirpost-graduate studies at NEHU. The University at its discretion may also award ascholarship to a fresh candidate of the final year class taking into account his/herperformance at the previous examination if he/she has obtained at least 55%marks (5% relaxation for SC/ST students). A student who is in full-timeemployment will not be eligible for these awards or scholarships.Financial assistance to poor and deserving students is provided under Students’Aid Fund for payment of tuition fees, examination fees, purchase of text books,stationary expenses; to meet hostel charges, expenses on clothes and emergencymedical expenses; or to grant interest free loans to deserving students and to meetany other needs of the students considered to be genuine by a special committeeconstituted for the purpose.HOSTEL ACCOMMODATIONThere are a few hostels providing seats to limited number of male and femalestudents in separate hostels at the Shillong campus. At present the University hasfifteen hostels accommodating students in either single or two/three bed sharingbasis. All the hostels are provided with a common mess as well as sports andrecreational facility. Intending candidates may apply to the Dean, Students’Welfare (DSW), North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, through their respectiveHeads of the department, after completing the process of admission. However,admission to a course of study in the University does not bestow any guarantee orright for hostel accommodation. For Tura campus, candidates may apply forhostel accommodation, through the Head of the department, to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, NEHU, Tura.LIBRARYNEHU has a Central Library at Shillong and a Campus Library at Tura. Severaldepartments are maintaining a collection of books and reports related to theirteaching and research activities for easy access to the students of the department.TRANSPORTThe University has its own transport system. There are a number buses operatingfrom the campus to different points in the city at regular intervals. All students ofNEHU need to pay a nominal fee, which entitles them to avail the facility.STUDY TOURS/FIELD VISITS/ TRAVEL CONCESSIONThe University facilitates study tours/field visits conducted by the departments toany part of the country. Students are provided with concessional train fare and amodest daily allowance for the entire period of the study tour/ field visit. Rail
travel concession is also provided to all the students for their research/field workand other academic activities. Rail travel concessions are also available to studentsvisiting their hometown during vacations.COUNSELLING AND PLACEMENT CELLThe University has a full-fledged Counselling & Placement Cell (CPC), whichprovides appropriate career counselling and guidance, and makes available verybest opportunities to the graduates in terms of campus placements, training, etc.The cell invites national, international and multinational firms/companies to thecampus for such activities. Interested students may kindly contact the Coordinatorof the Cell.NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEMEThe National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, located in the main campus andsponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) of Government ofIndia, envisages utilizing free time of students for social work. The schemeoperates in 35 affiliated colleges of NEHU in the state of Meghalaya. The NSSCell has been successfully implementing the charter of the scheme in past years.Many new innovative schemes of student's activities are being implemented andnew colleges are being inducted.SPORTS FACILITYThe Department of Sports facilitates different sports activities at the Universityand the colleges affiliated to NEHU. The department also extends support totournaments conducted by the NEHUSU for students in Tura and Shillongcampuses in sports like cricket, football, hockey, boxing, judo, weight-lifting,athletics, table tennis, badminton, chess, basketball, volleyball for men andwomen. Coaching camps are also organized. The department has four coaches forCricket, Basket Ball, Football and Athletics. A state-of-art indoor sports hall isavailable to students.23UNIVERSITY HEALTH CENTREThe University Health Centre provides basic medical facility to the students of theuniversity in the form of preventive, curative and promotive health services. Thecentre has two branches: one at Bijni campus and the other at the Umshingcampus. Medical officers are available for consultation at fixed hours as well asfor emergency consultation outside duty hours. Medicines are issued to thepatients free of cost based on the prescription by the university doctor. The centrehas adequate provision for dressing, injection and for minor surgical procedurescarried out in the dressing room. Routine immunization is carried out for all themembers of NEHU. First aid service is provided at all the sports meets andtournaments. Ambulance service is provided by the Centre during emergencies fortransporting a patient from residence to health centre or a hospital as the case maybe. Bio-chemical tests for blood and urine analysis have been started at the healthcentre. The health centre maintains a list of voluntary blood donors from amongNEHU community and arranges for blood donors in case of emergency for theneedy among NEHU community as well as for persons outside NEHU.
