<strong>National</strong> <strong>Diox<strong>in</strong>s</strong> Program – <strong>National</strong> <strong>Action</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> <strong>for</strong> address<strong>in</strong>g diox<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>• protect<strong>in</strong>g the natural habitat and wildlife• address<strong>in</strong>g environment and health issues• preserv<strong>in</strong>g natural resources and manag<strong>in</strong>g waste.In October 2001, to secure better protection of human health and the environment from the effects ofdiox<strong>in</strong>s the Commission adopted a Communication on a Community Strategy <strong>for</strong> <strong>Diox<strong>in</strong>s</strong>, Furans andPolychlor<strong>in</strong>ated Biphenyls. The Communication outl<strong>in</strong>es the problem of diox<strong>in</strong>s, the progress <strong>in</strong>address<strong>in</strong>g the problem, the rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g gaps, the basis <strong>for</strong> community action and develops a strategy toreduce the presence of these compounds <strong>in</strong> the environment, <strong>in</strong> feed and food.Table 4 describes the current guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>for</strong> diox<strong>in</strong>s applied with<strong>in</strong> Member States of the EU.42
