AutismThere may be instances where childcare providers cater for children <strong>and</strong> young peopleon the autistic spectrum. Some children with autism have particular issues relating tofood <strong>and</strong> will only eat a limited variety. Childcare providers should ensure that childrenwith autism are provided with food that they will eat, whilst making every effort toencourage them to consume healthy snacks <strong>and</strong> drinks.Religious <strong>and</strong> cultural dietsMany families have religious <strong>and</strong> cultural beliefs which influence the food they eat.People of Muslim faith are only permitted to eat foods that have been slaughtered in thecorrect Islamic way (Halal). Meat from pigs <strong>and</strong> other meat-eating animals is strictlyforbidden. Fish, eggs <strong>and</strong> dairy foods are permitted; however, cheese should not containanimal rennet. Muslims will avoid food items thought to contain lard or fat from animalsnot slaughtered in the correct way (for example, cakes, biscuits <strong>and</strong> pastries). Alcohol isalso forbidden.People of Jewish faith will only eat meat which is Kosher (a Jewish slaughter methodwhich allows as much blood as possible to be drained from the meat before preparation<strong>and</strong> cooking). Only meat from cloven hoof animals may be eaten (beef <strong>and</strong> lamb);meat from pigs is strictly forbidden. Most Jewish people will eat eggs <strong>and</strong> fish, however,only fish with fins <strong>and</strong> scales are permitted. Meat <strong>and</strong> milk foods must be kept apartwhen cooking <strong>and</strong> eating, some Jewish people will usually wait three hours betweeneating these types of foods. Cooking <strong>and</strong> eating utensils for milk <strong>and</strong> meat are keptseparately.Most people of Hindu faith are vegetarian <strong>and</strong> many (especially women) avoid eggs.The cow is sacred <strong>and</strong> even Hindus who are non-vegetarians will not eat beef. NonvegetarianHindus will eat lamb, pork, chicken <strong>and</strong> some fish. Staple foods includebaked cereal products (chapattis <strong>and</strong> breads), rice, pulses, milk, yoghurt <strong>and</strong> cheese(made without animal rennet).
