refused to contravene <strong>an</strong>d vilify their regally conviction <strong>in</strong><br />

art as their future career. Instead of dump<strong>in</strong>g art or be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

weakened by very defective societal hypothesis, they were<br />

determ<strong>in</strong>ed to fight, very frontally, with <strong>in</strong>telligence,<br />

wisdom, creativity, l<strong>an</strong>guage power, self confidence or<br />

strong will. What followed was a convocation of ideas<br />

mostly by few Igbo art students who were not ready to<br />

surrender their artistic pride to caustic <strong>an</strong>d vile feel<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

their <strong>artistically</strong> uniformed <strong>an</strong>d mis<strong>in</strong>formed<br />

environment. 40<br />

These students were Uche Okeke, the embodiment<br />

of the impend<strong>in</strong>g revolution, Simon Okeke, Demas Nwoko,<br />

Emm<strong>an</strong>uel Odita, O. Nwagbara, Oseloka Osadebe, Felix<br />

Ekeada, Yusuf Grillo <strong>an</strong>d Bruce Onobrakpeya. Apart from<br />

revolt<strong>in</strong>g ideologically, aga<strong>in</strong>st the parasitic <strong>an</strong>d non-<br />

Afric<strong>an</strong> nature of their art curriculum, they set <strong>in</strong> motion<br />

the agenda for total art rehabilitation <strong>in</strong> their college. M<strong>an</strong>y<br />

of these students had already acquired such academic pride,<br />

through their excellent Cambridge School Certificate<br />

Exam<strong>in</strong>ation results, that emboldened them to raise their<br />

heads high on the campus; particularly also know<strong>in</strong>g that<br />

m<strong>an</strong>y of their secondary school classmates whose results<br />

were not as good as theirs were <strong>in</strong> the departments of<br />

Architecture, Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d English, for example. 51 The<br />

non-departmental Zaria Art Society which the students<br />

formed <strong>in</strong> 1958 became a revolutionary commune that gave<br />

the students the opportunity to showcase their creative,<br />

academic, <strong>in</strong>tellectual <strong>an</strong>d ideological exuber<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />

Comb<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g various creative events with m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

literary activities on the campus, these art students,<br />

especially Uche Okeke, Demas Nwoko, Brnce<br />

Onobrakpeya <strong>an</strong>d Yusuf Grillo, quickly made themselves
