Sasol Wax is the leading specialist in innovative wax technology.at a glanceParaffin wax is the major raw material for the production ofcandles and many other applications in industries such as rubber& tires, chipboard, food-processing and packaging, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, inks paints & coatings, textiles as well as inroad construction and many others. For several decades Sasol Wax has focussed on the developmentof paraffin waxes and specialty wax blends for many differentindustries. Due to the wide range of our products, we are ableto offer solutions suitable for almost all production processes.Micro and macro crystalline waxes are renown for a broadspectrum of applications. Their use ranges from rather simpleapplications to process oriented tailor-made products forstate of the art production equipment. Specialties are createdfor innovative solutions.Paraffin waxes are complex mixtures of many substances. Theyconsist of saturated hydrocarbons. These crude oil derivativesare purified and refined by modern, environmentally friendlytechnologies (e. g. high pressure hydrogenation). Sasolwax isfree of any harmful substances. All highly refined products areconstantly monitored by a stringent quality control and arenon-toxic. Their environmental properties are characterized bygood biodegradability and non-cumulative effects.

paraffin waxesin the chemistry and blending industrySasol Wax products in the chemical industry are utilizedas processing aids in manufacturing processes as well ascomponents of finished products and formulations. In someapplications waxes are used as inert carriers e.g. for colors, active ingredients, scents etc. They also enhance hydrophobicproperties or act as sealing or release agent – dependingon the nature of the application. Sasolwax productscan also provide better consistency, enhance film formingcapabilities or act as a temporary processing aid. Also in thechemical industry paraffin waxes are chemically altered,e.g. chlorinated, oxidized or modified to soaps, alcohols estersand many more. In the following just a few of the widevariety of these applications are shown.Paraffin waxes are part of the formulation of solid emulsionexplosives among others like oxidizers, sensitizers and catalysts.Emulsion explosives usually do not pose any threat regardingtransportation, handling or storage: Paraffin wax, being continuesphase in the emulsion act as carrier of oil soluble activeingredients. Water as dispersed phase carries the second activeingredient.Paraffin wax is also used for coating gun powder and dynamitecartridges to protect them from moisture. Sometimes paraffinwaxes are used for the pleghmatization of explosives and pyrotechnics.A lot of paraffin wax is used in pyrotechnical packaging.Due to the relatively inertness of paraffin wax it is also suitableto protect any film, surface or even chemical substance againstoxygen or physical influences. By spraying a small amount ofspecialty wax formulations on the substance one may alreadyachieve efficient protection. Special designed paraffin waxformulation show migration properties. Those may be used asrelease agents in various applications as well.As paraffin wax is insoluble in water based systems small waxparticles may be suitable as defoamers. Wax particles becomeincorporated in the membrane of foam bubbles thus creatingpredetermined braking points. Defoaming systems are knowne.g. in washing powders adjusting the required amount of foam.Paraffin wax dispersions are also used as defoamers in waterborn systems, e.g. latex dispersion, to allow excellent film formingin the production of cloves or carpet backings.Paraffin waxes may offer a wide range of performance in emulsionsand dispersions: water repellence, lubricating, sealing and gloss are onlya few. However, in many specialized dispersions e.g. for paper, textile, inks, paints, coatings, polish and construction industry, paraffin waxesare only one part of the formulation and become co-emulsified withother active ingredients like polymers, resins, in organics, colours andothers. If the final application may require food contact approvals,e.g. in the packing industry, paraffin waxes may also provide it.Sasolwax products can provide consistency, enhance film forming capabilitiesor act as a processing aid or carrier.
