With the full colour BMW Head-Up Display, forinstance, important information such as speed, navigationor warnings can be projected directly into the driver’s lineof vision – so eyes can be kept focused on the road. For example, if you are about to change lanes on the motorway when another vehicleis overtaking in your blind spot, the Lane Change Warning System will alert you. There’s alsothe Lane Departure Warning System which will give a warning if you inadvertently cross alane marking.More precision assistance is provided by the optional Speed Limit Info*. This recognises traffi csigns and informs the driver of current speed restrictions. A further warning system, available inthe BMW Series for the fi rst time, is the optional BMW Night Vision function with pedestrianrecognition and Acute Warning. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have animproved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, therefore reducingdeformation.Brake Energy Regeneration. To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator)is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. BrakeEnergy Regeneration means the generator usually only generates electricity when the driver takeshis foot off the accelerator or the brake – previously unused kinetic energy is transformed incoasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery. THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO REACT TO DANGER:DON’T LET IT HAPPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE.A FEELING OF TOTAL PROTECTIONIS STILL THE GREATEST COMFORT.The active safety systems in the BMW Series recognise potentiallydangerous situations in their earliest stages and help the driverrespond in good time. For example, if the car is starting to oversteer orundersteer, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) stabilises the BMW throughbrake management and interventions in the engine. On slippery or loosesurfaces, such as snow or sand, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) providesoptimum grip by allowing carefully measured wheel slip. Plus, theoptional Integral Active Steering system intervenes to stabilise thecar in critical situations. If it is threatening to skid under braking oninconsistent road surfaces, Integral Active Steering carries out thenecessary steering movements. This makes it easier for the driver tocontrol the situation and signifi cantly reduces the braking distancerequired. As well as stabilising the car, DSC also offers additionalfunctions – the Brake Stand-by function, for one. If the driver backs offthe accelerator very quickly, the system rapidly builds up moderatebraking pressure. If the driver then brakes hard, the braking effect takeshold more quickly. Hill-Start Assistant is another useful feature. Thisallows you to move off comfortably on inclines without having to usethe parking brake. Then there’s the Brake Drying function which, whenthe windscreen wipers are activated, applies the brake pads lightlyand at intervals to dry the discs. This, in turn, keeps the brakes in good,responsive form. And fi nally, Fading Compensation helps the brakesmaintain their effectiveness even under heavy use.Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).
