THE Catholic Bishops’ Conference ofthe Philippines (CBCP) has called forthe Year of the Two Hearts of Jesusand Mary, from June 19 this year toJune next year. The CBCP is callingupon the lay faithful in all parishes toparticipate in peace building and socialchange. We are rightly embarrassedby the picture that our country showsdespite claims of economic and structuraldevelopments. We are embarrassedby the “culture of dishonesty,loss of integrity and truthfulness,” “thecrisis of morality and values” in public,professional, political and privatelife, which result in our being rated as“the most corrupt country in Asia”. TheCBCP has repeatedly called for moralrenewal and reform and it does againthrough its Pastoral Exhortation onthe Year of the Two Hearts.“Unless the Lord builds the house,in vain do its builders labor” (Ps.127/1). Hence, all our efforts andworks for renewal and reform, inpublic and personal life, shall bewith, through and for the TwoHearts of Jesus and Mary. Becauseof the call of the Holy Father, PopeBenedict XVI for a “special Year forPriests” (also from June this year toJune next year), our priests have alsoan important and necessary part inthe Year of the Two Hearts.The two coincidental announcementsby the CBCP for our country and byPope Benedict XVI for the wholeworld providentially re-affirm theunity that exists or must exist betweenthe priests and the lay faithful forwhom the priests are called by God.We proclaim the Year of the TwoHearts and the Year for Priests, in orderto re-affirm our true and total needof the grace of God and the power ofthe Cross and the Resurrection, so thatwe, priests and lay faithful togethermight move forward toward renewaland conversion in our individual livesfor the renewal of our country. Jointfirst of all with his Heart is the Heartof his mother.And so at Mass we pray: “Have mercyon us all; make us worthy to shareeternal life with Mary, the virginmother of God, with the apostles, andwith all the saints.” The core and centerof our offering is the Eucharist,which becomes the essential practiceof the spirituality of the Year of theTwo Hearts.Now, personal CONVERSION is theroot of all our renewal and oblation.This means “daily dying to ourselves,”which leads to turning to the Lord andturning to our neighbor in justice andcharity. This is emphasized by thesaints, like St. Margaret Mary of theSacred Heart and St. FaustinaKowalska of Divine Mercy. Our conversionleads us to our CONSECRA-TION to the Sacred Heart of Jesus togetherwith the Immaculate Heart ofMary. With consecration is joined ourCOMMITMENT to the will and planof the Father. The will of the Father isthat we love one another and serve oneanother as the Gospel teaches us.All these, Renewal, Offering and Conversion,are for peace building and socialtransformation, in order tostrengthen the “reign, the KINGDOMof the Heart of Christ” in our midst.The expression “the kingdom of theHeart of Jesus” which Pope John PaulII used, has also been used by saintsand spiritual writers. This “reigning”of the Heart of Christ is the beginning,the coming-to-be of the Kingdom ofGod yet-to-come. We might call theoffshoot of our renewal, oblation andconversion which result in the buildingup of peace and social change, isthe coming of the Kingdom of God.“Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be doneon earth as it is in heaven.” We canfittingly make this petition in the OurFather the “mantra” for the Year ofthe Two Hearts. Jesus and Mary aremodels of these petitions.What then is the spirituality of theYear of the Two Hearts? What is itsspiritual base? First: Renewal, Reformand Reparation. Second: Offering,Oblation. Third: Conversion, Consecration,Commitment. And finally: theKingdom. For short, we might use theacronym “ROCK”. This is the ROCKbase of the spirituality of the Year ofthe Two Hearts. It is a call not only tothe lay faithful, for their participationin social transformation, but also, inthis Year for Priests, a prayer for ourPriests, as well as a call to our Priestsfor their sanctification.Many people are trying their best tooffer solutions to our many problems.But, “Unless the Lord builds thehouse, in vain do its builders labor.”“Unless you abide in me, live in me,remain in me, and I in you, you cando nothing.” Let us be together, let usbe one in following the spiritualityunderlying the Year of the TwoHearts [ROCK] in order that we maydiscover God’s solution to the manyproblems of our country. “Thy will bedone on earth as it is in heaven.”July 5- 11, 20093

JESUS ____________RETURNS HOMESTEVE FERNANDEZ, Reflections on Mark 6: 7- 13Whenever a celebrity or a successfulperson returns home, he is always accordeda very warm welcome if not ahero’ s welcome. By the people toshow emormous pride in whom theyregards a son. We have seen the kindof welcome given to our pambansangKamao each time he brought homethe bacon. He would be paradedthrough a business center where hewould be showered with comfettisamidst the cheers the appluse, andthe jubiltion. Everybody loves winnerthey say.This was not the kind of welcome thatawaited the Lord Jesus in his hometown.Yes, for thousand of years theJews waited for the redemption to come.God had promised to send a redeemerand the people new that because it wasGod who had made the promise, itwould be fulfilled for sure. God is faithfulto His promises. However, whenthe fulfillment came in the person ofJesus they rejected Him. When Jesuscame to His active town, were there aparty, dancing, and a band as a sign ofwelcome for Him? No, there weren’t.His townsfolks rejected Him trueenough a prophet is not without honorexcept in his native place and amonghis kinsmen and in his own house.What is painful is when your ownkinsmen and townsmates will rejectyou. It is all right if your own enemiesreject you as it is just normal ornatural for them to do so. But to berejected by your relatives, friends andthe people who are supposed to loveyou if not to be loved by you is justtoo much to bear. This is what happenedto Jesus.In next Sunday’s Gospel Jesus comesback to His native town after a longtime of absence. When He leftNazareth people just knew Him as acarpenter or only a son of a carp enterif not of an ordinary couple, Mary andJoseph. But now on His return He isalready a celebrity. His popularity isnow soaring to the stratosphere afterthe many wonderful and miraculousthings He has done in the more populatedregion of Luke Galilee where HeI aunched His public ministry.Nazareth has a native son who isgaining emormous fame in the townsby the Sea of Galilee. He has gathereddisciples Jesus returns toNazareth around Him taught withauthority, cast out demons, playeddoctor, etc. the people of His hometownmust have got wind of all this.On a Sabbath Jesus goes to a synagogueand on a pulpit begins topreach the words of God. Those wholisten to Him marvel at what Hespeaks of. Before them is one fullwisdom and a great teacher.Where did He get all this? What wisdomhas been given him.? Whatmighty and singular deeds have beenwrought by His hands? Is He notcarpenter, the son of Mary and Joseph?These are the questions propoundedby them in light of whatthey see and hear or of what theyhave heard of Him.They can not accept that one of themwill be a celebrity, surpassing if notovershadowing them or will becomea great prophet of God. To them thisman is but the simple and mere carpenterwhom they fully knew to beignorant or devoid of knowledge andwisdom. They can not accept thatan ordinary person will go ahead ifnot get the better of them they areenvious of Him.That an ordinary man, merely the sonof a carpenter, will talk to them whoare the religious leaders, the officialsof the synagoue, the well reputed andthe rich members of society, and thepeople is just too much for them tobear. Because there is envy in theirhearts, the Lords message, howeverbeautiful and full of truth, bouncesback. He is rejected by His own people.Because He is merely the son of carpenterlet alone of an ordinary couple,he is stripped of the right to stand onthe pulpit to speak.The words of God can not sink into theirhearts because also of prejudice. I still rememberthe racial bigotry which MartinLuther King fought against in the1960s and which prompted him to deliverhis “ I Have a Dream” speech inwhich he dreamed that someday blacksand whites would sit together beforethe table of brotherhood.Moreover, the people of Nazareth knowthe Lord Jesus too well as ordinary person,a mere carpenter. What about us?Do we know our God as such too?Perhaps we just now Him as a supplierof grace, coming to Him only when weare in need but forgetting Him in goodtimes. Surely it is not enough nor complete.Maybe we know Him also as aloving and forgiving God so that regardlessof the number of times wecommit sin His forgiveness in alwaysthere waiting for us. Well and good.Or do we know Him as just an ordinaryman, a mere carpenter like thepeople of His native place? Hopefullywe know Him as one sent by God tospeaks the truth to which we must listen.At His baptism at the Jordan avoice in heaven is heard saying: “ Thisis my beloved Son with whom I ampleased.
