Dear Sangha,
Ulrike Halpern/ From the Director
Here we are approaching the Harvest of Peace 2012. Amazing how time flies!
Let me begin by telling you the best of news - Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche will
personally be giving teachings to the Shambhala Level 1 directed by Acharya
Simmer-Brown October 26 through October 28. Isn’t that news worth talking
about? Please mention this special opportunity to everyone you might think is
interested in Shambhala. Word of mouth is the best way to do publicity and it
would be wonderful to have a full house for such a special occasion.
We are very excited to be hosting the Harvest of Peace on Saturday morning,
September 22, at the Boulder Shambhala Center. That afternoon, everyone is
invited to attend one of the potlucks held at community members’ houses, it’s a
little bit like the brunches on Shambhala Day.
Sunday, September 23, we will be hosting the first Sun Day Assembly beginning at
10.30am in the morning. The Sun Day Assembly is a monthly event for people
to be together. The first hour will be more ceremonial, followed by a high tea
(with gluten-free options) from 11.30am to 1pm. I hope that many, many of
you will join us, children, youth, parents, singles, grandparents, aunts, uncles and
cousins, new practitioners, old practitioners, non-practitioners, and everyone
else. Whatever category you find yourself in, you are welcome!
Oh, and most importantly I would like to say “Thank you” to everyone who
supports the Boulder Shambhala Center, your time and service to make this a
place that is inviting and supporting to others on their path through life.
Yours in the Vision of the Great Eastern Sun,
Additional Daily Chants for Karma Dzong Boulder
Beginning on the Harvest of Peace, the Boulder Shambhala Center will be
adding several new daily chants. These additional chants will only be done
at Land Centers and Dzongs, which includes Boulder. Other city practice centers
and groups will continue to do the more simplified set of daily chants.
Below is an excerpt from a July letter from Rupa Acharya Suzann Duquette
about the refinements and revisions to the daily chants.
“I am very pleased to announce that Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche has approved
the chants and chant sequences to be used at land centers, Karma Dzongs and
dathüns. This letter offers these chant sequences so that they can be practiced in
a unified way throughout the mandala. These are different from the chants and
chant sequences introduced for use in our urban centers in the fall of 2011–
Shambhala Meditation Centers and Shambhala Meditation Groups.
“In Shambhala urban centers daily chants are designed to be accessible for
newer practitioners as well as to inspire all levels of practitioners. For land
centers, Karma Dzongs, and dathüns the daily chants are oriented toward residential
communities of practitioners, hubs of practice, and the deeper retreat
practice of dathün.
“Chanting is a strong vehicle and powerful practice for joining heaven and
earth, body and mind. Engaging in chanting as a practice, we invoke energy,
proclaim the teachings and, importantly, remind ourselves of how we can apply
the teachings in our lives.”
The added daily chants are in bold.
Morning Chants
“Proclamation of Goodness”
“Supplication to the Shambhala Lineage”
“Homage”
Evening Chants
Protector Chants
“Protectors of the Three Courts” (with drum)
“Shambhala Protector Chant “(without drum)
Closing Chants
Intro to Kyudo
Introduction to
Kyudo
(Contemplative Archery)
with Alex Halpern
Wed September 12th: 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Free and open to the public!
Kyudo is meditation. You don’t have to belong to
any particular religion or organization to practice
meditation. Everyone is welcome to practice
here. There are three main styles of meditation:
sitting meditation, standing meditation, which is
kyudo, and walking meditation.
“All the hopes of ego - wanting a good car, a
good husband or wife, money, a nice house - in
kyudo, we learn to cut this, so that our deep
hearts are completely clear. But it is a continual
process. If you use kyudo merely to build your
ego, you will not have real perseverance. You
will likely be a three - day monk and quickly
give up. Most important: never forget your beginner’s
heart.”
----Kanjuro Shibata XX, Sensei
In 1980, Shibata Sensei XX and his son came to
Boulder at the invitation of Chogyam Trungpa
Rinpoche to introduce the warrior practice of
kyudo – the way of the bow. Since that time, Shibata
Sensei has been a treasure in our community.
Still, many people have never seen kyudo, and
others who may have seen it do not understand
what they are watching. This evening, Alex Halpern
will speak about kyudo as it has been taught
by Shibata Sensei – and why a person might actually
find this practice to be a valuable part of his
or her life as a dharma warrior.
The Way of Shambhala
The Way of Shambhala is a curriculum that introduces the
teachings of the Shambhala path. It begins with Shambhala
Training Levels I. Each Shambhala level has a companion fiveweek
course to integrate the teachings into our daily lives: (I)
Meditation in Everyday Life, (II) Contentment in Everyday Life,
(III) Joy in Everyday Life, (IV) Fearlessness in Everyday Life,
and (V) Wisdom in Everyday Life.
The Shambhala path is a training to develop the qualities
of gentleness and bravery. Using meditation as a means, we
discover confidence, openness, and clarity. We can further
embody these qualities into our lives with dignity. The Rigden
Weekend completes the first year of the Way of Shambhala.
Featured in September – Two Formats for MIEL
You can begin the Way of Shambhala with ‘Meditation in
a new series called “The Basic Goodness Series”. It is comprised
of three courses, with six classes in each course. The titles for the
three courses, which are taken sequentially, are:
I. Who am I? The Basic Goodnes of Being Human
September 2012
Practice & Ecucation
In general the BASIC GOODNESS SERIES presents Shambhala
and Buddhist teachings in an experiencial way, with an emphasis
on understanding the view and meaning of the three
yana teachings. This series is a powerful journey through the
experience of basic goodness as we live our lives - our personal
experience, our experience with others, our experiences
of society, and our relationship with the reality of life itself.
This fall the Boulder Shambhala Center will pilot this series
ONLY for those students who have completed WOS Year
through FIEL. In the future, however, this series will be open to
the public.
Shambhala Vajrayana
Talks by Sakyong M ipham Rinpoche
Sep 19-Oct 24, 7-9pm
This is a series of Vajrayana talks (on DVD) by Sakyong
Mipham Rinpoche's from the 2010 Vajrayana Seminary.
These talks were given in the midst of the Sakyong's yearlong
retreat, and reflect a particular depth and clarity of
Shambhala Vajrayana. One theme that weaves through
these talks is the notion of “transforming our mind as a
seed to transform the world.”
This program is resticted to tantrikas - those who have
been to Vajrayana Seminary or Sacred World Assembly.
Embodying the Wisdom of the Deity
with Ari Goldfield at the BSC
Saturday October 13, 7pm
Ari Goldfield will give a talk to the Vajrayogini and
Chakrasamvara sadhakas on diety practice.
Yidam means "the deity who is close to you" or "the personal
deity." How can we bring the deity of our practice more fully
into our own personal being? Developing this integration with
our yidam is our creative challenge, especially in the parts
of our lives that feel anything but divine. This evening we will
explore and practice a few techniques to help us deepen
our experience of the deity's wisdom and presence as our
embodied, living reality.
RESTRICTED to Kagyü Sadhakas Price: $20 Price
The Yogas of Luminosity and Mahamudra
A Six Dharmas Practice Weekend
with Ari Goldfield
October 12-14 at the BSC
Of all the six dharmas' practices, luminosity yoga is perhaps
the subtlest and most difficult to master. Yet, if we can join
with the experience of luminosity, we can gain confidence that
we will be able to meditate in the darkness of sleep, and
even the darkness of death.
This weekend will explore how key aspects of mahamudra
practice can enhance our experience of luminosity. We will
also review and refresh our subtle body practices from last
year.
RESTRICTED to those who have received the lung for the practice
of the Six Dharmas of Naropa. Price for weekend: $200.
The Aging Group
Next meeting
Wednesday October 10th at 6:30pm
Summer meetings were small but as time goes on we connect
more and more and enjoy each others company! Our September
meeting was a social held at the home of Wren Fritzlan.
Good food and friendship is the quarterly theme!
In our meetings some of the discussions centered on housing
for people with limited means and greater needs. We also
had a report on a forum hosted atCongregation Har Ha Shem
on the "Silver Sunami". It was presented by Restoring the Soul,
an organization created by Tania Leontov. Our representative
spoke about the buddhist based aging group at the
Shambhala Center and how it's orientation is different from a
social service approach and also from other religious groups.
Another note worthy event was an on-line discussion of care
circles lead by Mary Whetsall. Mary is the International
Director of the Shambhala Societal
Health & Well-Being Working Group. She has worked for
many years as a trainer setting up a particular model of care
circles in various communities. This model could be well utilized
in many of our local centers. It is
refreshingly structured and the very active question period
demonstrated how stimulated the participants were. Care
circles have been in use in the Boulder community for some
time but this model that Mrs. Whetsall has been
training groups in is quite unique in that individuals can be
trained to lead a group in a compassionate, knowledgeable
and well-organized way. Once
the training has been done leaders can be ready to advise a
care circle with clarity when needed. The "wheel doesn't have
to be re-invented" each time, and many of the pitfalls and
burn-outs can be avoided. The Aging Group may
have an interest in having a training for Boulder. Please be in
touch if you have an interest in such a training. You don't have
to be part of the Aging Group to join in.
The October 10th meeting (Weds at 6:30) will host Dr. Phil
Weber. The topic is: Working with the Three Poisons (passion,
aggression and ignorance) as one gets older.
