A Common Bond: Maltreated Children and Animals in the HomeAbout the AuthorsMary Lou Randour, PhDMary Lou Randour is a psychologist and head of theDepartment of Human/Animal Relations: Education& Outreach for The Humane Society of the UnitedStates. In that role, she identifies legislative and policyprojects—and builds coalitions to support them—onthe topic of animal abuse and human violence. Shewas a practicing clinician for 17 years, received postgraduatetraining at the Cambridge Hospital at HarvardMedical School and the Washington PsychoanalyticInstitute, and holds the position of adjunct assistantprofessor of psychiatry at the Uniformed ServicesUniversity of the Health Services. Randour is theorganizer and chair of the Animal/Human Interaction Section-in-formationof the Society of Counseling Psychology, American Psychological Association.Prior to A Common Bond, she co-authored two handbooks, AniCare Child:An Assessment and Treatment Approach to Childhood Animal Abuse and TheAniCare Model of Treatment for Animal Abuse. Randour is the editor of one bookand the author of two, including her latest work, Animal Grace.Howard Davidson, JDHoward Davidson is director of the American BarAssociation (ABA) Center on Children and the Law.He has been actively involved with the legal aspectsof child protection for more than 33 years and hasdirected the Center since it was established in 1978. TheCenter provides extensive training, technical assistance,consulting, and publications for lawyers, child welfareagencies, juvenile (dependency) courts, and programsthat provide legal representation in those cases.Davidson chaired the U.S. Advisory Board on ChildAbuse and Neglect and is a founding board member ofthe National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He has authored manylegal articles, book chapters, and other materials on child maltreatment and thelaw, including What Lawyers and Judges Should Know About the Link BetweenChild Abuse and Animal Cruelty. In Boston in the 1970s, he created one of thecountry’s first children’s law centers. In 2006, Davidson was asked by the ABA todirect a new Commission on Youth at Risk.41
