A <strong>Common</strong> <strong>Bond</strong>: Maltreated Children and Animals in the HomeAmerican Humane Association<strong>The</strong> American Humane Association is the only nationalorganization dedicated to protecting both childrenand animals. Through a network of child and animalprotection agencies and individuals, AmericanHumane develops policies, legislation, curricula, andtraining programs to protect children and animalsfrom abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Founded in1877, the nonprofit membership organization beganraising awareness about <strong>The</strong> <strong>Link</strong> ® between animal abuse and other forms ofviolence as early as 1894. American Humane established the <strong>National</strong> ResourceCenter on <strong>The</strong> <strong>Link</strong> ® Between Violence to People and Animals in 1999 to assistprofessionals interested in preventing violence by providing resources andtraining regarding the connection between human violence and animal cruelty.American Humane actively promotes the benefits derived from the humananimalbond, including implementation, coordination, and ongoing supportof animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy.
