The School<br />
<strong>Copenhagen</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fashion</strong> <strong>Design</strong> is a private school aimed at teaching<br />
clothes design. The school was founded in 1983 by Marianne Duchwaider. The<br />
development <strong>of</strong> the students’ creative skills is the <strong>Academy</strong>’s highest priority.<br />
This is done by giving the students an artistic and visual understanding <strong>of</strong> good<br />
design as well as a thorough knowledge <strong>of</strong> the various disciplines relevant to the<br />
design trade.<br />
The academy also <strong>of</strong>fers insight to the many facets and demands <strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
through lectures from well-known designers. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the lectures is<br />
to prepare the students for what life as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional designer entails.<br />
Students <strong>of</strong> the academy are eligible for a state education grant (SU) as per SU’s<br />
rules for higher educations. Graduates from the academy are also eligible for<br />
joining Teknisk Landsforbund, the union for designers.
The Classes<br />
1 st years.<br />
Year one is the foundation year where the fundamental principals within the<br />
following subjects are taught: Drawing, fashion illustration, technical drawings,<br />
trend and idea development, fashion information, pattern making, sewing, size<br />
grading and draping.<br />
3 design projects including presentation portfolios are completed within the 1st<br />
year.<br />
2 nd year.<br />
During the 2 nd year the design projects will include among other men’s and<br />
children wear. This year also entails working with more advanced methods within<br />
the disciplines mentioned under year one. Technical drawing t<strong>og</strong>ether with<br />
size specifications are now done by computer using the pr<strong>og</strong>ram Illustrator. Photoshop<br />
and In<strong>Design</strong> are also available on the school computers and can be used<br />
to develop and produce presentation materials. The 2 nd year is more directed<br />
towards the industry. It’s the year where the students develop their personal<br />
style <strong>of</strong> design and prepare for the demands <strong>of</strong> the design industry. Although<br />
the 2 nd year’s projects are targets at the industry the school allows substantial<br />
freedom to develop both originality and talent<br />
The curriculum for the 2 nd year also includes 3 design projects including presentation<br />
portfolios. The year ends with an exam project which is a complete<br />
design process including producing a presentation portfolio and sewing the collection.<br />
The exam will be judged by 2 external examiners approved by the ministry <strong>of</strong><br />
education.
The Subjects<br />
A good designer is a person who is skillful at transforming creative thoughts and<br />
ideas into tangible sketches and from those develop a final product. However,<br />
being a designer also entails being a good craftsman, understanding all the<br />
aspects <strong>of</strong> pattern making, draping and sewing as well as having an in depth<br />
knowledge <strong>of</strong> materials and modern production methods.<br />

The Aim<br />
The training is build up around a combination <strong>of</strong> artistic and technical subjects<br />
with the aim to develop the students’ skills within clothing design.<br />
Artistic Subject<br />
Idea development, design process, fashion illustration, technical drawings and<br />
presentation <strong>of</strong> design projects.<br />
Technical Subjects<br />
Pattern making, size grading, draping on dress form and sewing<br />
Aim<br />
The students will become familiar with the basic principals in the design process<br />
as well as acquire skills related to the technical aspects <strong>of</strong> this process.
General information<br />
The Course<br />
<strong>Copenhagen</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Fashion</strong> <strong>Design</strong> accepts students every year in September<br />
and every other year in February.<br />
Classes are conducted Monday to Friday 9 am – 2.30 pm. Term starts September<br />
1 st and ends ultimo June.<br />
For classes starting in February term starts February 1 st and ends January 31 st .<br />
The course takes 22 months incl. holidays.<br />
Admission terms<br />
No prior training is required to be admitted to the academy. However, since the<br />
school is a private school with classes being taught at a high level with individual<br />
instructions, we emphasize that you come to a personal interview. If you have<br />
done any creative projects we would very much like see these at the interview.<br />
Facilities<br />
The academy’s premises are 400 square meters <strong>of</strong> spacious and light rooms,<br />
located in the center <strong>of</strong> <strong>Copenhagen</strong> 5 min. away from Nørreport station.
Terms and Conditions<br />
Payments are done in advance in quarterly installments. If payment is received<br />
more than 8 days after the payment date, a 2% interest per commenced month<br />
as well as an administrative fee <strong>of</strong> 100 DKK will be charged.<br />
The academy reserves the right to adjust the prices in the event <strong>of</strong> unforeseen<br />
price increases that the academy is not responsible for or has no influence on.<br />
Cancellation <strong>of</strong> the agreement with the academy<br />
In the event <strong>of</strong> a cancellation <strong>of</strong> the agreement with the academy before term<br />
starts the deposit will be lost, please see admissions form.<br />
After 9 months <strong>of</strong> classes the agreement with the academy can be terminated<br />
by the end <strong>of</strong> the month, with a 3 month notice period. Notice <strong>of</strong> termination<br />
must be provided in writing<br />
Absence<br />
If a student is absent for more than 20% <strong>of</strong> the classes this student cannot expect<br />
to pass his or her exams and will therefore only receive a written statement<br />
from the academy.<br />
If a student’s absence is a hinder to the education <strong>of</strong> other students the academy<br />
reserves the right to expel this student if said student has not reacted to<br />
reminders and warnings.<br />
Not included in the School Fee<br />
Costs such as drawing supplies, colors, paper, fabric, model fees etc. as well as<br />
a potential study tour, are not included in the school fee.
