6

WHEN YOU START YOUR COURSE
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO STUDY?
The beginning of your course can be an overwhelming and surprising time as many things are different
than you have been used to at your former schools. There are many things to relate to – new people and
many practical problems. You need to learn to structure your time and make priorities. You are expected
to study full time and work thoroughly with each class, which means you have to prepare on your own.
You will experience more exams during your first year in more than one class. The exams are often
close to each other so you need to handle se-veral issues and classes at the same time.
NEW FORMS OF STUDYING -
AND MORE DIFFICULT LITERATURE
You have to get used to other forms of teaching and reading books with more complex content than you
are used to. You can also expect to read more pages than you have done before. You will, probably, have
fewer lessons than in high school, or you can experience periods with many lessons followed by a period
with a lot of individual work. Therefore, you will need to spend more time preparing on your own or in
study groups. All this means you will develop good study habits.
10 PIECES OF GOOD ADVICE
FOR THE NEW STUDENT
1. If you are not offered a study group at your place of education, find one yourself. Your fellow students
experience the same problems as you and dialogue is important for gaining knowledge of the level and
academic challenges of each class.
2. Plan and prepare for your classes. Read the study programme, the teacher’s semester plan, and
examination regulations thoroughly and make a basic time schedule to follow. Structure your time!
3. Take it easy! You will not have a perfect view on things at first, but that is perfectly normal. The feeling
of chaos is quite natural at first. It is not until after one or two semesters you start to see how the classes
are connected and everything falls into place.
4. You are no longer going to school and you are no longer a pupil. This means that you are 100% responsible
for your own learning. If you do not prepare for and participate in classes, make the suggested
assignments etc. it does not affect your teachers – only yourself.
5. The first part of the course is typically hard work with many assignments, lessons, and books to be
read. Hang in there and do your best, with time it will be easier to cope with.
6. The physical surroundings are important for your ability to concentrate. Maybe the best place to
study is not at home but at the library, in an empty room at the Academy, or with your study group.
7. Remember that you never start from scratch. You always have relevant knowledge from your previous
schools, your work, family etc. Make use of this and use it in class.
8. Focus all your attention on your studies (in your first semester), minimise or avoid working alongside.
This is the time when you make the foundation for the following semesters.
9. Give your new course a chance. The level of interest in a certain class is often connected with the level
of knowledge. A class which from the outside seems boring can be exciting when you get into it. If you
start considering changing to another course, then talk to your teachers, the Director of education,
student counsellor, friends from class, etc., so if you make the decision to stop it is a well-considered
decision.
10. Accept all the help you can. Participate in courses about study techniques, read books about it. Exchange
experiences with your fellow students and teachers on how best to plan the process of studying.
7

FORMS OF STUDY
Teaching will usually be in classes; however, sometimes teaching will be in the form of lectures. If you receive
lectures it is important than you are well-prepared as you do not have the same opportunity to work with it
as you have during classes. Often work will take place in groups and it is important within each group to have
clarified the demands and expectations you have to each other regarding attitude to work. This is particularly
important when you work with large projects in a group. If you have any problems in the group it is important
to take it up with your supervisor and teacher. When your group is established and you have started working
together you cannot evict or remove someone from the group without an application to and approval from the
Director of Education, Lise Mejlhede Kjelbjerg.
PURCHASE OF BOOKS
At the beginning of the courses, a booklist will be handed out. As this list might be changed from one year
to the next, we recommend that you purchase books for one semester at the time. Use e.g. amazon.co.uk to
find the cheapest books or pensum.dk for used academic books. When you purchase books, we, generally,
recommend that you buy the newest editions unless your teacher advises you against doing so. You can talk to
your teacher about this.
QUALITY DEVELOPMENT
At Dania, The Academy of Business and Technology, we work on developing a new concept for quality development.
Until that work is done, the Academy works on the basis of Mercantec’s concept of quality (The quality wheel). The
quality wheel is adapted to the Academy in the way that we on a yearly basis participate in benchmarking research
(a comparison with other academies). Mercantec has, furthermore, its own quality development processes in the
shape of satisfaction surveys and focus group interviews with students. All this is done to continually be better at
what we do.
During your time studying, you have to write four comprehensive projects (including your final examination project).
You will get a project supervisor, who you can make use of by appointment. Use your supervisor when you
make your problem statement and your paragraph on methodology as these are the base of the entire project.
to state the number of keystrokes excluding blanks for the entire project (e.g. if the project can be 10 pages the
maximum number of keystrokes is 10x2200 = 22,000). For exact page limitations and further information about
PROBLEM STATEMENT
It takes time and many attempts to make a good problem statement. It is difficult to give an exact description
