INTRODUCTION.<br />

Welcome to ward 8. We hope you enjoy you placement with us here at the<br />

Freeman Hospital. We look forward to sharing and facilitating your <strong>learning</strong><br />

experience with us and welcome you as a fresh and vital part <strong>of</strong> our team. We<br />

understand and remember what it is like to come to a new and unfamiliar<br />

environment and all the pressure that entails. We have therefore developed<br />

this information document to help you achieve the requirements and<br />

expectations set by the university.<br />

This document contains essential information about the ward, an induction<br />

checklist and a <strong>pr<strong>of</strong>ile</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>learning</strong> opportunities. In addition we have made<br />

suggestions for possible visits to enhance your time in this <strong>learning</strong> zone. It<br />

allows you to establish dates for initial, intermediate and final interviews in<br />

advance, whilst establishing key points <strong>of</strong> your <strong>learning</strong> contract with your<br />

mentor. Using this document along with one <strong>of</strong> our year specific competency<br />

booklets, we hope to provide a useful framework for your time here in order to<br />

fulfil your <strong>learning</strong> experience The Education Resource box (black box) is also<br />

a valuable resource for you to use.<br />

Here on ward 8 we appreciate that <strong>learning</strong> is a multi-directional process and<br />

we welcome this concept. Please share with us anything that you find<br />

particularly useful or any resources that may be <strong>of</strong> benefit to other students in<br />

the future and to us on the ward. We welcome your contributions, suggestions<br />

YOUR MENTOR<br />

WARD EIGHT INFORMATION.<br />

On arrival to the ward, you will be introduced to your mentor who will be<br />

responsible for you during your allocation. Your mentor will show you around<br />

the ward and ensure you are familiar with nurse call system fire and cardiac<br />

arrest procedures. It may not always be possible to work with your mentor, but<br />

this will give you the opportunity to experience different approaches to care.<br />

ORGANISATION OF THE WARD<br />

Various shift patterns are currently in practice on Ward 8, most staff work 2<br />

long days and two short days, the long day is from 07:30 – 20:00 , short days<br />

are early 07:30 – 15:15 and 12:15 – 20:00, Nights are 19:30 – 08:00. Please<br />

discuss your preference with your mentor.<br />

The ward implements a form <strong>of</strong> team nursing.<br />

� Team 1 consists <strong>of</strong> the patients in Bay 1, bay 2 and cubicle 1 - 3.<br />

� Team 2 consists <strong>of</strong> the patients in Bay 3, bay 4 and cubicles 4-7.<br />

You and your mentor will be allocated a team <strong>of</strong> patients to care for during<br />

your span <strong>of</strong> duty. You may change teams after days <strong>of</strong>f. Each team has there<br />

own team leader, who will coordinate the care for that group <strong>of</strong> patients.<br />

The nurses on the ward provide holistic care toward their patients, from<br />

completing the admission procedure, providing pre- and post-operative care,<br />

administering drugs and organising the patient’s discharge from hospital.<br />

THE SURGERY<br />

Ward 8 is a vascular surgical ward but can also care for general surgical<br />

patients. Common vascular operations include:<br />

- AAA repairs<br />

- EVAR<br />

- Femoral-popliteal bypass<br />

- Embolectomy<br />

- Amputations<br />

and wound drains<br />

Students are allowed to use the ward computer to access selected<br />

information. The ward computer has many articles and the indispensable<br />

intranet on it. (try looking in the ward documents�resource file folder). We<br />

also have a teaching room with a selection <strong>of</strong> books and handouts.<br />
