Bulldog Championship ClubThe <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>University</strong> Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Teams are gearing up for another successful season. Over the pastfew years, many improvements have been made to our programs, both on off the <strong>field</strong>. Our Cross Country Team capped a run of threeconsecutive American Southwest Conference Championships with a 2004 title, while the 4x400 indoor and 4x100 outdoor relays won NCAADivision III National Championships.To help us reach these goals, we have established an annual fundraising campaign to assist in purchasing uniforms, shoes, and equipment, andto help us with travel needs. This will allow us to continue the development of our program and reach our goal of being one of the top teams inthe NCAA Division III at both the regional and national levels. We are asking that you help jump start our 2009-10 season by participating in theBulldog Championship Club. He was a Second Team Academic All-American in 2006-07.• TLU women’s 4x100 meter relay team took third place at the 2007 NCAA DIII Championships. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> alsoplaced seventh in the 4x400 relay, and sprinter Staci Jackson crossed the line in eighth place in open 400.• The 2007 men’s golf team tied for seventh at the NCAA Division III Championships, and Jonathan Swisher andTanner Carter claimed 2007 Men’s Golf All-America awards. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> and individual golfer Ryan Kiel won ASCChampionships.• The 2007 baseball team won its third straight ASC Championship and advanced to its third straight NCAA regionaltournament. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> finished 15th in final ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll.• The 2007 women’s golf team won TLU’s first ASC Championship and advanced to first NCAA DIII Championshipsas full team. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> finished 19th at NCAA DIII Championships.• The 2006 baseball team tied for ninth in the nation after advancing to the regional final of the NCAA Division IIIWest Regional for the second consecutive year. The baseball team also won its second straight ASC Championship.• The 2006 men’s golf team finished 12th in the nation for a second consecutive season at the NCAA Division IIIMen’s Golf Championships. TLU men’s golfer Josh Werland earned his second straight All-American honor with a12th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships.• The TLU men’s golf team and senior golfer Michael Faterkowski each claimed ASC Championships. Faterkowski wonthe individual title by a whopping eight shots. Faterkowski and the <strong>Bulldogs</strong> led wire-to-wire in the ASCChampionships.• The TLU women’s <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong> team sent five participants to the 2006 NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’sOutdoor Track & Field Championships. The women’s 4x100 meter relay team earned All-America distinction with a6th-place finish.• Aaron Crais, TLU’s slugging catcher, became the first TLU student-athlete to be named the American SouthwestConference Male Athlete of the Year. Crais, a two-time All-American, was the ASC West Division Player of the Year,the NCAA Division III West Region Player of the Year and the TLU Male Student-Athlete of the Year.• TLU led all American Southwest Conference schools with six 2005-06 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIselections. All the Bulldog selections were First Team honorees.• Two TLU student-athletes - Abby Cochran (women’s golf) and Natalie Wood (women’s <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong>) – werenamed ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in the 2005-2006 academic year. Cochran was selected to theAll-America Second Team in the Women’s At-Large Program. Wood was named to the All-America Third Team inthe Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Program. 2009 SEASON IN REVIEW TRACK & FIELD RECORD BOOKWomen’s Track and FieldIndoor and Outdoor RecordsBrooke BaseyThe <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Bulldogs</strong> entered the 2009season with 17 new members to the team. The TLU indoorseason had four meets (and included a meet at MissouriSouthern <strong>University</strong>.) In the indoor competitions, DevinEvans set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet,3 inches.At the conclusion of the indoor season, TLU entered into a verysuccessful outdoor <strong>track</strong> season. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> qualified four athletesfor the NCAA Outdoor Championships. TLU had three entries into theNCAA Championships, including entrants in the 200-meter dash, the400, and the 4x100 relay.The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> also had seven athletes named to the AmericanSouthwest Conference All-Conference Team, produced 14 conferencechampions (counting relay members that won championships), andhad the ASC Freshman of the Year and the ASC Track Athlete of theYear.After receiving winning first-day performances at the ASCChampionships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase from Brooke Baseyand in the 10,000 meters from Tiffany Wetz, the <strong>Bulldogs</strong> won sixevents on the second day. TLU captured titles in the 4x100 and 4x400relays, the 200 (Staci Jackson), the 400 (Jackson), the 800 (Jackson),and the 5,000 (Wetz). Wetz was the ASC Freshman of the Year, andJackson was the ASC Track Athlete of the Year.During the <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong> season, the <strong>Bulldogs</strong> collected five of theseven ASC Athlete of the Week Honors.Jackson went on to finish third to earn All-America honors in the400 meters at the NCAA Championships. Jackson’s time in the 400meters was 54.81 seconds to break her TLU school record. Jacksoncurrently holds the most All-American honors than any other TLUathlete with 10 All-American honors. Jackson’s 2009 third place finishis the highest individual finish for a Bulldog at the NCAA Division IIITrack & Field Championships.For Jackson, her efforts at the ASC meet earned her the 2009 ASCFemale Athlete of the Year. Jackson qualified for the 2009 NCAA DIIIChampionships in the 100, 200, 400, and the 4x100 relay. Jacksonentered the finals of the 400 meters at the national meet with thefastest time.Jackson was also named the TLU Female Athlete of the Year. Zarate also serves asthe assistant director ofsports information at TLU.For the 2008 women’scross country season, CoachZarate guided the <strong>Bulldogs</strong>to a fourth-place finish atthe ASC Championshipsand to a 20th-place showingat the NCAA Division III South/Southeast RegionalChampionships. Both meets were hosted by TLU underthe direction of Coach Zarate.In the 2009 women’s <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong> season, TLUand Coach Zarate took four student-athletes to theNCAA Division III Outdoor Track & FieldChampionships, where Staci Jackson earned her TLUrecord10th All-America citation. Jackson finished thirdin the open 400-meter dash to gain the highestindividual <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong> finish in Bulldog athleticshistory. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong> finished second in the teamstandings at the 2009 conference meet and producedseven All-Conference athletes and six conference eventchampionships.In 2008, Zarate led the TLU women’s <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong>program to its most successful season. The <strong>Bulldogs</strong>captured the NCAA Division III NationalChampionship in the women’s 4x100 meter relay andfinished second in the nation in the women’s 4x400.TLU also took third place in the NCAA DIII indoor4x400. Following his high school runningcareer, Zarate attended TLU in 1999 and worked as astudent assistant coach throughout his four years as astudent at TLU.Zarate graduated from <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> in May of2003 with a bachelor’s of arts degree in kinesiology.Zarate says his top goals are to build, strengthen, andmaintain a winning tradition for the <strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong>women’s cross county and women’s <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong>programs. Zarate is USA Track & Field Level 1 & 2certified.Zarate is the son of Carmel and Mary Zarate ofPearland, <strong>Texas</strong>. Holland graduatedfrom Adams State in 1990with a bachelor’s degree inEnglish/Journalism/Communications.While at Adams State, Holland was an All-Americanin <strong>track</strong> & <strong>field</strong>, an Academic All-American, and a 15-time collegiate national championship qualifier.Holland qualified for the Junior Olympics as a senior inhigh school in the 400 and 800 meters.Holland came to the TLU women’s crosscountry/<strong>track</strong> & <strong>field</strong> programs with over 13 yearsexperience at both the high school and college level.Holland is USA Track & Field Level 1 certified.Holland also has been the assistant coach atPlattsburgh State <strong>University</strong> from 1991 to 1993. Shethen moved to Plattsburgh High School to become thehead cross country and <strong>track</strong> & <strong>field</strong> coach until 1999.Holland then returned to Plattsburgh State to resumeher coaching duties as assistant cross country/<strong>track</strong> &<strong>field</strong> coach until 2003.In 2004, Coach Holland assisted with the Soka<strong>University</strong> cross country/<strong>track</strong> & <strong>field</strong> programs untilshe accepted the assistant coaching position at <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>University</strong>.Kris AllisonAssistant CoachWomen’s Track and FieldKris Allison is in his fifthseason working with thepole vaulters of the <strong>Texas</strong><strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>track</strong> and <strong>field</strong>program. The first three ofhis five years with TLU werespent as a consultant for theprogram. Allison coachedJessica Raglon to twoAmerican SouthwestConference Championships(2005, 2007) and coachedRaglon to qualification at the2008 NCAA Division IIIOutdoor Track and Field Championships, where shefinished ninth in the nation.Allison also spent four seasons coaching the <strong>Texas</strong>State <strong>University</strong>-San Marcos pole vaulters. In the fourseasons, Allison had 24 Bobcat vaulters score points atthe Southland Conference Championships andproduced six NCAA Midwest Regional qualifiers, oneSouthland Conference champion, and one NCAADivision I national qualifier. Allison has also workedwith pole vaulters at the <strong>University</strong> of the IncarnateWord and at Trinity <strong>University</strong>. Additionally, KrisAllison is the head coach of the Lone Star Pole VaultingClub, based in New Braunfels, <strong>Texas</strong>.From 2002-2003, Allison coached former OlympicTrials finalist and NAIA national champion LesaKubishta, whose personal record was 14 feet, 4 inches.Allison is a USATF Level 1 and PVSCB certifiedcoach and a USATF certified official. In July 2004, heserved as the head pole vault clinician at theprestigious USATF/USOC Women’s Junior EliteTraining Camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center inChula Vista, Calif.As a Division III student-athlete himself, Allison wasa two-time SUNYAC Champion in the pole vault at theState <strong>University</strong> of New York at Cortland, where hegraduated in 1998.MartyDavenportAssistant CoachWomen’s Track and FieldMarty Davenport is inhis second season workingwith the throwers of the<strong>Texas</strong> <strong>Lutheran</strong> <strong>track</strong> and<strong>field</strong> program. CoachDavenport graduated fromRockport Fulton HighSchool in 1981 and thencompeted at Odessa JuniorCollege from 1981 to 1983.Davenport then transferredto the <strong>University</strong> of <strong>Texas</strong>and competed for theLonghorns from 1983 to1985.Coach Davenport’s athletic achievements include theNational Junior College Amateur Association DiscusNational Champion in 1982, NJCAA shot put indoorAll-American in 1983, the NJCAA shot and discusoutdoor All-American in 1983, the Junior Pan-American Games Discus runner-up in 1983, SouthwestConference Discus Champion in 1984, NCAA DivisionI national runner-up in the discus in 1985 (205 feet, 5inches), placed 5th at the U.S. Nationals, andparticipated in the Olympic Sports Festival 1987.
