PARK &GARDENS11The Park and Gardens Department had aproductive year in 2007. Planting programmeswere held around the zoo throughout the yearto replace old trees and to camouflage barriers.Shrubs were also added to the existing collection toadd density and to provide better ground coverage.This includes the additional 400 hibiscus trees atthe main Parking Lot for more coverage to thebarrier wall along the Kemensah river bed.The housing areas around Zoo Negara which sproutduring the early 1980s is very much visible from thevisitor trail in the zoo. Yellow bamboos (Bambusavulgaris) were planted as border plants all alongthe zoo gate as to ensure natural camouflage ofthe houses. It will however take a few years for thebamboos to work to full effect.Certain plants really work well to camouflage steeland concrete structures to ensure a softer lookto an exhibit. The Rangoon Creeper (Quisqualisindica), Angle Trumpet (Solandra nitida), GarlicVine (Pseudocalymma alliaceum) and MexicanCreeper (Antigonon leptopus) are suitable creeperplants that were planted at the Leopard Exhibitto camouflage the steal chain-linked roof. Thecombination of creepers produced bright red, pink,purple and white colours has made the exhibitwarm and welcoming.Fruit trees are planted at the zoo as a food sourcefor certain animals. In 2007, fruits trees such asthe ‘Kelapa Pandan’, ‘Kedondong Sengkuang’, and‘Jambu Air’ had been planted in exhibit areas toprovide more food for hoof animals. The ‘KelapaPandan’ trees are planted along the ‘Pandang’ riverwhile the ‘Kedondong Sengkuang’ trees are plantedat the Mammal Kingdom and at the Banteng Exhibit.The ‘Jambu Air’ trees however, are planted alongthe Primate Exhibits because guava is a well-knownfavourite of certain primates.Timber trees are also planted to provide shadein the zoo and to replace fallen ones. Taking intoconsideration of its size and height, timber treeswere planted only at suitable locations in thezoo. Trees such as the ‘Kapur’ (Dryobalanopsaromatica), ‘Balau’ (Shorea sp.) and ‘MerawanSiput Jantan’ (Hopea odorata) were planted atthe zoo’s picnic area, train station area and at theSavannah Walk in 2007. Other aromatic trees suchat the ‘Tanjung’ (Mimusops elengi) and ‘TembusuTikus’ (Pteleocarpa lamponga) were also plantedto provide shade at the Wall’s Café, the WildRestaurant and at the children’s playground.Certain plants are also planted for educationalpurposes; Dragon fruits are famous nowadays butnot many know the physical characteristics of thecactus-like plant and how this fruit is produced.The department has taken the initiative to plantthe pitaya tree (Hylocereus costaricensis) at themain entrance so that zoo visitors may have thechance to see the actual plant.Landscaping is one of the main reasons for tree andshrub planting in the zoo. Suitable plants will providecolours at locations that are dull. The ‘SetawarAir’ trees at one of the trainstops were replacedwith a more vibrant tree species; the Cordylineterminalis var. fireband trees. Surrounding thesetrees are the Pandanus pygmaeus and Ophiopoganjaburan, colourful ground cover plants to add tothe landscape.Other locations that required landscaping werethe crocodile exhibits at Reptile House and at theSumatran Tiger Exhibit. The Heliconia spp. wasreplaced with the ‘Kadok Gajah’ (Sanchezia nobilis)and a ginger species plant (Zingerber spectabile)which is shaped with a cone with red and yellowishflowers. Besides shrubs, trees are also used inlandscaping and two species were planted at thePrimate exhibit; the banana trees (Musa omata)and Saka Herb trees (Alpinia purpurata) or redginger. Palm trees were also frequently planted aspart of the landscaping project around the zoo butmany have over grown to an undesirable height. In2007, the Yellow Palms and Traveler’s Palm treesalong certain trails in the zoo were replaced withcolourful Heliconia species.
ZOOLOGYBIRDSThis year starts with the successful hatching offive Emus under natural parental incubationin their enclosure. Bird House received majorupgrading of facilities and exhibits during the yearwhich include the upgrading of the Milky Storkaviary, kitchen, office rooms, new bird cage, newbird photo corner and second tram station. Mostof these facilities were built 21 years ago. Withthe spruce up facilities, the Bird House is nowready to further excel in the captive breeding ofendangered bird species. At the end of 2007, thetotal bird species of 127 with 1342 specimens wererecorded.Breeding ProgrammeThe Bird House has been blessed with numeroussuccesses in captive breeding of endangered birdspecies. In 2007, 16 species of birds were bredin captivity and because Zoo Negara has over300 adult specimens, the Painted Stork (Mycterialeucocephala) remained to be the most prolificbreeders.
