WEMPE CHRONOMETERWERKE Seconds Precision Pendulum ClockA 1.47-Metre Tall and 34-Centimetre Wide Period Piece Crafted withTo-The-Millimetre PrecisionGlashütte, 18 September 2006 - No fewer than thirteen coats of lacquer are applied tothis pendulum clock’s wooden case, which is embellished with metal intarsia. Inside,connoisseurs will find a timekeeping construction that maximises accuracy bycompensating for variations in atmospheric pressure. Two aneroid-capsule instrumentsare affixed to the Superinvar pendulum, which is more than a meter in length. Whenatmospheric pressure is high, the aneroid capsules are compressed, thus correcting theweight downward; when atmospheric pressure is low, the capsules expand away fromeach other, thus pulling the weight upward. The clockwork is manufactured in cooperationwith the Sattler clock manufactory in Gräfelfing (near Munich). It subsequently undergoesfurther refinement at Glashütte Observatory. The dial, which was designed by Wempe, iscrafted at the observatory, where it receives its striped decorative pattern and silky mattesilver plating.
