For Christiansand others, it comes with Christmas, Kwanza, and the secularnew year.As our shared communities savor the prospect of peace andhope, we seek to discover a new sense of possibilities, a newbelief in the gifts we can share, and shared connections thatbond families, friends and neighbors.For the Jewish Federation of Broward County, we seeevidence of this unity — and it spans not just thecommunity but the world. Just a few months ago, we stoodtogether with fellow clergy and citizens at an historic SouthFlorida Summit for Israel. The event was held to expressopposition of the campaign to delegitimize Israel. Nearly2,000 Jews and Christians gathered at Nova SoutheasternUniversity — under one roof and speaking in one voice —in support of the Nation of Israel.More unifies than divides Christians and Jews, Israel DeputyForeign Minister Danny Ayalon told attendees. This is a mostimportant alliance at this critical hour. Ayalon wasn’t alone inthis sentiment. Pastors, Rabbis and citizens from across SouthFlorida’s religious and social spectrum rose together to uniteas never before.On this late summer night, we discovered a new sense ofpossibilities — where we, as people, were empowered tofind our common ground. When a Pastor led a stirringrendition of the song “Jerusalem of Gold” — in Hebrew, noless — it was a testament to our collective strength.Mohandas Gandhi once said, “You must be the change youwish to see in the world.” At that moment, on that collegecampus in a city almost 7,000 miles from Jerusalem — thecradle of Judeo-Christian beliefs — we discovered whatmany already knew: That pro-Israel Jews and Christians sharea timeless connection to one another.Now, it’s time to advocate for that connection across ourcommunity.
