Stillman.Every year about this time, mankind rejoices in the prospectsfor peace, unity and new connections. For Jews, it comeswith Rosh Hashanah — the Jewish New Year. For Christiansand others, it comes with Christmas, Kwanza, and the secularnew year.As our shared communities savor the prospect of peace andhope, we seek to discover a new sense of possibilities, a newbelief in the gifts we can share, and shared connections thatbond families, friends and neighbors. For the Jewish Federation of Broward County, we seeevidence of this unity — and it spans not just thecommunity but the world. Just a few months ago, we stoodtogether with fellow clergy and citizens at an historic SouthFlorida Summit for Israel. The event was held to expressopposition of the campaign to delegitimize Israel. Nearly2,000 Jews and Christians gathered at Nova SoutheasternUniversity — under one roof and speaking in one voice —in support of the Nation of Israel.More unifies than divides Christians and Jews, Israel DeputyForeign Minister Danny Ayalon told attendees. This is a mostimportant alliance at this critical hour. Ayalon wasn’t alone inthis sentiment. Pastors, Rabbis and citizens from across SouthFlorida’s religious and social spectrum rose together to uniteas never before. On this late summer night, we discovered a new sense ofpossibilities — where we, as people, were empowered tofind our common ground. While that evening was dedicatedto the unwavering support of Israel, seeing all those facesin the crowd made us realize that we were witnessing thetip of an iceberg of how we can inspire change in the worldwe share.Federation Board Member Heather Gilbert and Agnes GrayMOM’S NIGHT OUTThe Young Families Division participated in a scavenger huntmodeled after the classic game show “Supermarket Sweep” – allto help fill the coffers at the WECARE Food Pantry, a beneficiaryagency of the Jewish Federation of Broward County.Marissa Caponera, Tammy Edelman, Samra Vogel, YoungFamilies Division Co-Chair Honey Backman, Mom’s NightOut Chair Marissa Feig, Stacey Schulman and Young FamiliesDivision Co-Chair Ricki AuerbachLogan MondsheinMaria Miniaci and Sean CollinWOMEN’S DIVISION EMERGING LEADERSThe second Women’s Division Emerging Leaders class tested theirskills at a ropes course, focusing on team building and leadershiptraining.Back Row (L-R): Emerging Leaders Chair Judy Spatz, RandiBlum, Belinda Reitman, Marcy Blumenfeld, Federation SeniorVice President of Campaign Suzanne Andisman, RebeccaCohen, Corinne Cott and Alexis Karstaedt Front Row (L-R):Marci Grapin, Vice President of the Women’s Division LaurenRickoff and Debbie CovertMichael and Lainie Zager with their childrenJoint Tax SeminarNearly 500 legal, financial and personal wealth advisors hadthe privilege of hearing Dennis Belcher who spoke about howto create some “pop” and “sizzle” for an estate planning practice. This annual event is co-hosted by the Jewish CommunityFoundation, United Way and Community Foundation of Broward.Jewish Community Foundation PAC Chair Mark Krill, JewishCommunity Foundation Chair Alan Cohn, Board MemberElissa Mogilefsky, Legacy Chair Randy Friedlander, FrankAdams, Joint Tax Seminar Co-Chair Sheldon Polish and FRDChair Ray LeightmanIt left us with a renewed belief in the gifts we share. Aseach speaker stepped to the lectern, the thunderous roarof applause from the audience was heard. It didn’t matterthe presenter’s religious faith. When a Pastor led a stirringrendition of the song “Jerusalem of Gold” — in Hebrew, noless — it was a testament to our collective strength.Mohandas Gandhi once said, “You must be the change youwish to see in the world.” At that moment, on that collegecampus in a city almost 7,000 miles from Jerusalem — thecradle of Judeo-Christian beliefs — we discovered whatmany already knew: That pro-Israel Jews and Christians sharea timeless connection to one another. Now, it’s time to advocate for that connection across ourcommunity. Please join us. Let Broward County be a modelfor the nation and the world. Our differences should notdivide us; instead, as we found that summer evening, weshould be bound with mutual respect for the issues andcauses that unite us — for the betterment of mankind and achance for lasting peace.Eric B.
